Builders of Greece

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1573590/Colonize/

Builders of Greece is a city management game which lets you display your strategic and economic mastery. If you’ve made it all the way here, then the grace of gods is with us. Have your builders and craftsmen raise magnificent structures and monuments in your name. As for yourself, look closely into all the nuances of planning, politics, and economics. Make your city expand beyond the horizons and let the word of its splendour reach the furthest corners of this land. Builders of Greece grants you the opportunity to witness the greatness of Hellenic metropolises before the time of Roman conquests.

_Knowledge of the fact differs from knowledge of the reason for the fact.

– Aristotle_

Plan out your city with great precision by creating efficient infrastructure between buildings and establishing unabated production chains. Select your advisors wisely to create the cradle of liberty and sciences or unite Greece by force – as you prefer. Compare your accomplishments with historic figures among Greek constructors in an epic campaign or achieve the highest rank in competitive mode.

_He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have.

– Socrates_

Even the most well-designed city is never fully self-sufficient – maintain good relations with your neighbours to reap the lucrative benefits of trade. Supply your city with resources crucial to its proper functioning as it expands ever further. Eventually, the prestige of your urban wonder may attract esteemed philosophers to its doorstep. This task may prove to be quite a challenge but offer wealth and enlightenment as rewards.

_It is best to rise from life as from a banquet, neither thirsty nor drunken.

– Aristotle_

A city is not only brick and marble but foremost its citizens, and their needs have to be met – from the most basic ones, such as food and security, to sophisticated demands of luxury goods and access to bathhouses or the announcement of the Dionysia. Fulfilling one need may risk disrupting another. For example, locating your buildings so that they don’t conflict with one another may take careful planning but will certainly pay off in the end. Should your city attain the required splendour, it may strive for constructing a major temple dedicated to the deities of the Hellenic pantheon.

_One should attend to one’s enemies, for they are the first persons to detect one’s errors.

– Antisthenes of Athens_

The fame you attain as the designer of cities will not be to everyone’s liking. At some point you will need to decide whether peace is to be maintained with coin, blood or intrigue weaved to set your rivals against each other. No, differently than the favour of the gods, having a reliable ally may prove indispensable, as your opponents bide their time for your next mistake.

I feel like it is important to point that this game this is made by solo dev, who has been great at interacting with everyone in discord and is willing to listen. Now those of us that have dipped into the early access games will know that this is something to cherish lol.

Also the Gameplay well let me go into more detail about that, but it is important to remember that it is early access so may change after i write this review but what i have found so far is:

Tower defence - The towers have this kinda Age of Empires feel to them this brings back that old nostalgia i love that! There also is an Arachnophobia mode this is something i recommend you play i wont tell you why, just trust me it is worth it! The enemy ramp up nicely giving a good amount of failure and felt to me like fun Gameplay

This game is excellent for civ building and tower defense gamers. I am a seasoned (72 years old) player of both. The combo of both makes the game intriguing and challenging. It has depth without drudgery. Folks who do not play either of these genres may like this one just for that reason. To me there is a third aspect included - research. Which path should you choose first. There is no formula - one choice may be the best this go round but not in the same sequence the next time. And there will be a next time as you progress from map to map. Deciding how to allocate workers is another juggling complexity. The Dev’s UI design is a thing of beauty. Easy to use, informative info tips and an effective warning/informing system. Whatever your gaming proclivity I encourage you to give this one a try. It is just that unique.

Mythos: Slavic Builder

Mythos: Slavic Builder

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1732910/Photography_Simulator/

Before the missionaries came to the Slavic lands to start writing down the known history, there was the Age of Mythos:

Forests, valleys and fields are full of creatures from Slavic beliefs. Even though they may look like monsters, you don’t have to fight them all. Make proper offerings to them and you will gain powerful allies.

Give your workers a roof over their heads and a good supper and they will build a thriving settlement for you. Do not disappoint your subjects, because dissatisfied people may leave you.

A long spear and a sharp sword will always be useful - your settlement is threatened by monsters, other tribes, Vikings or even demons from distant lands.

Follow Slavic traditions to earn points that you may spend on special blessings from the gods - the warlike Perun, the generous Mokosh and the mysterious Veles.

Defense of the Oasis

Defense of the Oasis

I picked this up after being mentioned on Crate and Crowbar as a puzzle game with very short rounds appealed. It fits that comforting spot very well. I can play a few rounds while other stuff is happening around me in the house. As an older game it’s also at the right price. I have never been a graphics obsessive, but to me these graphics have an old-school style, but work fine on my 1yr old Windows gaming laptop, and I never have trouble working out what a particular tile is. The game structure is an elegant idea with not too many pieces, where the pieces combine well to create lots of interesting variation.

I bought this game a long time ago - forgot about it, tried to find it again a few times over the years since and it was impossible to find. I was so excited to see it finally on Steam! However after 2 minutes it’s clear that it is just a port of an amazingly old game. Going into full-screen mode immediately breaks the game and makes it unplayable with a ton of graphical glitches. I’m glad its available to play though, but be warned that it’s a bit ugly and potentially buggy.

It has been described as ‘Civ meets Minesweeper’ and if that sounds like something you’re into I recommend it.

One of if not THE ONLY “God game” I have ever played that is not another RTS borefest.

You do not have to build everything for the people and I love that!

You place land tiles in a seemingly infinite grid. Land tiles such as grasslands, Forests, Deserts, Oceans, and the such. Each prividing different resources for little humans who live grow and die all on their own.

The game is still being developed and will continue to get better as the dev Myron continues to expand and advance the game.

Simply put, this is the first real God game!

It’s neither Black and White nor Populous, but that’s okay because Deisim actually manages to carve out it’s own identity as a God game somewhere in between. Actually, on the surface Deisim kind of makes me think of Godus, except this is actually a good game. And in fact, one mind blowing consideration is that even in its current Early Access stage, Deisim is already a better game than Godus, despite being made by just one guy.

So anyway, the emphasis is on the placement of land tiles that you use to shape the environment, which then leads to tribal villages popping up. The villages will then use the environmental resources you’ve placed to grow and prosper, and eventually evolve into small towns, leading to more believers and more mana. Although indirect interaction is mainly how you grow your world, direct interaction is possible too, such as picking up villagers and buildings, or casting spells directly on things to either help or hinder the villagers. Towns will inevitably begin to spawn heretics who if given too much leeway, will convert their town into a heretic faith, eventually causing them to wage wars of conquest on their neighbours. To deal with this, a good old dose of fire or locusts can convince the heretics the error of their ways and show them that yours is the true faith.

Mind the Vikings

Mind the Vikings

I loved this game at first, and even gave it an excellent review but now its dead. One developer lout of the 2 working on it left. I wasted my money for a broken, buggy, incomplete game. First time I’ve been burned by early access. I hope the remaining dev is able to sell the title to a different studio that can complete it, but no one should waste their money on this. You can get other games with the same concept that are complete. If i could, I would return it. I was unfortunate enough to play it for an extended period of time.

PROS:

Great art style

Simple gameplay but still very fun

Actual people who interact with eachother

Factions

Personality

CONS:

Kinda unfinished

Overflow of bugs (see in comments how many bugs)

People cannot interact with relics

SUGGESTIONS:

Add a map, with different islands. Make people fight for the islands. Also add a “peacefull” gamemode with no other vikings.

Make people interact with relics, like climbing the relics.

See people actually coming by boat to the island.

Please dont make the suggestions a DLC.

Odin won’t let me go outside anymore and I have Stockholm Syndrome

Early in the year 2021, I heard about this game a decent amount of people were talking about: “Valheim”

It appeared to be some sort of Survival Craft / Sandbox title taking place in a Norse mythology setting, and since I love both, I thought to myself: “Hey, let’s give this a try!”

Several months later, I’m unable to tell if that grunt I just heard came from some creature in the game or my own stomach because of the pasta I ate raw in order to minimize the time spent on something else than building, slaying monsters and gathering materials.

I’m going to start with the good. This is a great game; with I think a great future. There’s plenty to do and it looks good. The simplicity works well. I love the building, really love the building. Yes there are dead areas in the world at the moment; but I know that will be filled in eventually. If you haven’t played this game, please pick it up. It’s worth a spot in your collection.

Now to the reason I can’t play this game anymore, and I have a little story for you. For some time now there has been a world destroying bug in the game. Your world progress will be reset back to the first day. Anyway, during covid lock, I’ve been separated from my girlfriend. UK to US travel has not been permitted until a few days ago. This game was our game. We spent weeks building a huge castle together. We laughed together, we talked about bad things going on in our lives, we got drunk together while playing this game. Some days, we just played quietly while listening to music together. What we built was huge, towers to their maximum possible height. Wide area’s paved with stone floor for housing and other buildings. We had friends come in to help us gather the stone; while also drinking and having a good time. Then about a week ago we loaded in to play after a month break to find everything was gone. EVERYTHING.
