Legends of Murder Collection

Legends of Murder Collection

This set of games from 1989 were ahead of their time, and are a delight to play now. Steam DOSBox integration has the games running smoothly with modern resolutions, with few adjustments needed. These games feel like a past retro version of RPG maker, and it’s uncanny how intuitive they are to play today. Highly recommend - just make sure you use the interact key everywhere, because characters and objects are often invisible.

I’ve played a lot of puzzle games before, but it’s been a very long time since I’ve been this enthralled by one! There are so many interesting puzzle elements that are introduced completely organically, allowing you to understand them without the use of an explicit tutorial and, instead, through experimentation. New elements are presented even late into the game, which always made me excited to see what would lie in each new area.

The exploration is also fantastic, with secrets hidden in tricky to reach areas that give puzzles an extra layer of depth and make hunting around every nook and cranny feel properly rewarding. The amazing, outside-of-the-box solutions to some of the secrets were mind blowing and always felt amazing to figure out!

On September 22nd, 2020 the game Chip’s Challenge became free on Steam. In Chip’s Challenge you control a character on a tile grid and solve a series of puzzles around moving blocks, opening doors, using tools, avoiding enemies, etc. to reach an end. Here’s the thing, Chip’s Challenge is now thirty years old and shows its age. Puzzle design that seemed engaging and exciting to me in 1995 is now tedious and dull. The joy has worn off.

On September 22nd, 2020 the game Blackshift published on Steam. Blackshift is Chip’s Challenge if it were, well, still good. The base description of the mechanics are the same (ok, you blow up a thing instead of finding an exit) but the “etc.” above keeps on going and going. Even as far as the 98th level new ideas are being added. Puzzles are often creative and surprising. Sure, across 100 levels not all are going to be winners, but by and large figuring out a level is a joy. Every time you beat one you just have to peek at the next one to see what it has to offer. And then you’re there and you just have to give it a try. Then suddenly it’s hours later than when you wanted to stop playing.

Dust to Dusk

Dust to Dusk

A well-written short horror story!

The actual main plot was quite unexpected for me and I had a lot of fun with the puzzles.

A lot of effort was put into it with a lot of CGs and plenty character portraits! I was very happy about the game having a gallery!

I think it’s a well-spent few hours, especially considering the low price.

If you would still rather have a look into the game before buying then you can watch a part of my playthrough:

I wasn’t too sure what to think about the overall plot until I got everything in the gallery and unlocked one last side story. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I would highly recommend that you make the effort to do so as well. Otherwise, you’ll really be missing out. If you enjoy horror-themed adventure games with heart behind them, you’ll love this. I had a great time, and it was packed with way more content than I expected given the one dollar asking price.

THE NORMAL THING

THE NORMAL THING

Very fun game with interesting and challenging puzzles. Not too long, not too short.

Some of the text is in Korean, but most of it gets translated to english when you choose that option from the title screen.

Fun enough for me to want to go and get all the achievements.

Overall I would recommend to anyone who enjoys escape the room/ point and click type games.

Absolute masterpiece, just in case some dunno where to change language, its on the right bottom corner of the UI, the game has nice challenging puzzles, emotional great story and normal or true ending. At least finish the true ending to get the full of story of the dog, 11/10 for this FREE game!!!

Phantom Path

Phantom Path

I’ve recently started trying to make video games. As such, I can say that I get the impression that the developer is trying to convey to the player a condensed version of what it feels like to make the game.

  • You have a bunch of sometimes fiendish problems on your hands

  • It’s somewhat of a dark storyline

  • You spend (or at least I spent) a lot of time running in circles, sometimes in a “grindy” way and other times in a “Jesus Christ wtf do I do?” way

  • You go to others for help when you need it (the developer is good about answering questions in the “discussions” section)

Phantom Path is a neat little puzzle game. Having finished the game in about ten hours, there’s a lot that I liked but also some stuff that took away from a very good experience.

The game is separated into separate levels, each containing one and sometimes two puzzles to open the exit to the next level. Each exit requires yellow or blue fire in particular pillars around the level. In the beginning it is pretty straight forward to find a fire of the required color and bring it to specific pillars. The further you progress it becomes more challenging, especially with the introduction of more puzzle elements. There are teleporters and bridges which also require a source of power that you have to find and provide. Furthermore there are so-called arcane walls that only let you pass if you have transformed into a floaty phantom thingy. Problem is that you can only do that transformation in certain positions of the map and as long as you are transformed you cannot interact with anything or exit the level, so you have to transform back first.

A nice and atmospheric game. The graphics and sounds are well done and really help you to immerse yourself into the games world. While the game is short, it does have a branching storyline, where different decisions take you down different paths, giving it replayability.

Puzzle Chambers

Puzzle Chambers

math and I don’t get along, so as much as I love puzzle games, I try to avoid ones with too many numbers, though there are a few exceptions (nonograms, hexcells and its spinoffs, etc.). puzzle chambers actually plays a bit like crosscells, as in you get a bunch of numbers and operators and you have to make sure everything adds up on the board. or in the room in this case, because it’s not just a puzzle game, it’s also a story about some people who wake up and can’t remember anything, but they have to solve puzzles to escape. as they point out at the beginning, it’s kinda like saw or the cube.

Nice Puzzle game with a quirky background that’s revealed bit by bit.

As you can see, good window and sound options, as well as plenty options to remove stuff that lets you wait.

I don’t really know what penalty you get when you fail while not using unlimited solutions, I tried and could just continue to guess. Maybe you might want to have free solutions later on for tough stuff, but I want to solve them myself anyway. :)
