Unearthed: Trail of Ibn Battuta - Episode 1 - Gold Edition

TL:DNR: A noble, but much flawed effort. Buy it very cheap ( us$1), or="" for="" the="" achievement="" 100%="" ( us$1.50) br="" Okay - so this is one of those games that the “comedians” of Steam just go on about either with brutal comments about it giving them cancer, or racist/sectist crap, or they do the lame sarcasm.

This isn’t one of those.

What I like about this game, is their intent. To make a Arabic/Northern African themed game of adventure and discovery. I like the characters most of the time, and would really like to see more games coming from Arab countries make it into the mainstream (Semaphore is a Saudi game studio), as I am intrigued to hear their cultural voice applied to gaming. The graphics are generally pretty good, though the ATV escape ‘chapter’ had some odd graphics quality, I think to mimic a sandstorm, but looked like a bug. The brother and sister team is a great idea too. /us$1),

“Oh look guys, it’s Timothy writing a review for that one game everyone on youtube makes fun of! I can’t wait until he tears it a new arsehole, because he’s a cynical bastard and that’s what cynical people do!”

If this was your reaction when you noticed this review, then I’m sorry to tell you that I will not write a funny 9/11 Allahu Akbar type of review. I respect the dev team, who put a lot of work and effort in this game, too much for that. Well yeah, this game is inspired by Uncharted, Tomb Raider, what not, they won’t deny that. But at least they are enthusiastic about it. What’s the last time you saw people this happy about making a game? Even if the game is buggy (and oh, trust me, it is, I’ll elaborate) I still had fun playing it simply because I know the devs had fun making it. They really want to make an amazing adventure series where you explore the arabic world and its many fascinating places (which it truly has, no doubt about that). The dev team knows that they’re not making GOTYAY material and doesn’t say they are. They try to stay positive while everyone on the internet’s too busy making fun of them and their “worst game ever” (a title that many other games I’ve played deserve more). They respond nicely to often assholish or ‘funny’ behaviour and criticism, which I think is something most developers can learn from. So yeah, kuddos for that, guys.

Pickaxe does nothing at all. I can’t progress past anything that requires flint because of it. I tried to use multiple pickaxe on any form of rock I could find. I would have had a lot more fun if my body was marked on the map after death, I walked forever just to find out my dead body despawned, or maybe just never dropped at all. Hopefully a dev fixes this, I’d like to actually enjoy the game

Wall of insanity

Wall of insanity

Wall Of Insanity is a serviceable third person shooter. It never reaches greatness as several things hold it back.

First is the incredibly garish colour/lighting choices. Many of the area in the initial house and even the midgame caves seem horrible overexposed.

Shadows are terrible. You’ll see enemy shadows through walls or your own shadow against the wall when sliding down a ladder, which doesn’t have one.

Speaking of ladders, this game has fall damage but only on extreme drops. The only place this is ever likely to happen is by ladders ironically as you can fall down their shafts

This review is further detailed in the video below.

I was really torn between a positive and negative review for this one. I marked it as “Informational” for my curator account but I am unable to for standard reviews.

Wall of Insanity is a pretty decent indie game. The graphics aren’t top of the line but they aren’t bad either. The gameplay is fun enough to keep me playing until the end, however the cons section really hurts the quality of the game. With some future patches that address the FOV, Keybinds and bugs we have ourselves a quality indie survival horror shooter.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

_Post Review Update:

To those commenting this was a spin-off, I understand that, but to play this game and understand what is going on, you would have to have played the first Alan Wake. So if basing the difference in game quality alone, that most people would have played the first Alan Wake and would have been expecting the same level of quality.

As always, criticism is welcomed._

### “The first Alan Wake game was like reading a good Stephen King novel, whereas this game feels like watching a bad Stephen King “Made for TV” special”

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is a nightmare indeed. American citizenship not required. Nor being Alan Wake.

Story

Alan Wake was once a prolific writer now turned author of reality. Trapped in a hostile realm he calls The Dark Place for almost two years. Wake has escaped into the fictional town turned actual location of Night Springs, Arizona; the titular town of a low-budget psychological thriller TV series he once wrote for in his early days. Having lost all contact with his former life; Wake has embarked on a quest to return to his world by using the powers that dwell in The Dark Place that respond to his creativity and rewrite reality. American Nightmare centers on his hunt for his evil doppleganger, the elusive and powerful Mr. Scratch . Mr. Scratch has taken Wake’s identity in the real world, wreaking havoc with murders, maimings, and mind control, but is stuck keeping constant tabs on Wake to ensure he can’t return. Wake has brought with him a weapon; a manuscript that can change the world as he lives it, but the pages have been scattered and he’ll have to track down Mr. Scratch while collecting them to make use of their power. Interesting as this all sounds, the story is short, uneventful, and save for Mr. Scratch’s evil antics; lacks any level of emotional connection.

There wasn’t any reviews of this when I bought it so was a stab in the dark. What drew me in was the setting. I love the idea of a world where you can explore portals to other maps as if your some sort of researcher collecting samples. Sounds a lot like the movie Annihilation and maybe a bit the Russian movie Stalker.

What concerns me is that the project doesn’t sell and gets abandoned. My hope is that I get enough entertainment out of it that I get my money’s worth either way. I have played a bit and like what I see though. The atmosphere is very gloomy and moody. You’ll hear some weird sounds out in the wild too. So far, I’m enjoying this and look forward to seeing how this shapes up. Will dive in further and update this review as needed.

Vugluskr: Zombie Rampage

Vugluskr: Zombie Rampage

In this video I take a look at Vugluskr: Zombie Rampage, a third person zombie shooter.

Don’t get me wrong this is a very low quality game…. but…. I enjoyed it! It’s the level design that won me over. You need to activate these zip lines to complete the level and find the keys. Each zip line requires 15 crystals to activate so you need to play the levels cautiously so you have enough crystals to get out from where you put yourself. It’s quite fun.

Now for the low quality parts… pretty much all the rest. There is nothing (that I have encountered) that was game breaking apart from when I hit escape to try to find options for key bindings only to discover it just leaves the game if you do that. I had to start my video again. :( There’s no jumping, poor shooting animations/sound effects, poor menus, etc, but it was fun and that’s ultimately what it’s all about. So if you don’t mind games that look cheap but play well your in for a treat I think, a cheap one too at $5 USD. Anyway, take a look at the video to really see what it’s like.

Deadly Cosmic

Deadly Cosmic

It’s a short but very cool game, I liked the creatures and the mystery in the plot, I also liked the little moments of humor. In fact I wanted the game to be bigger because I was very involved, but it makes sense for the price. From my point of view it is a game that worth it!

Real player with 2.1 hrs in game

Loved the premise of the game, and the graphics definitely give it that unique feel and add to the creepy vibe. I had a little trouble with the perspective, especially when there was a creature just off screen that I could no longer see because of the change in perspective, but you learn to maneuver and function quick enough.

Took me a while to find and operate the toilet… longer than I would like to admit. Overall, I would definitely recommend playing through this one, it is worth it!

Here’s some gameplay if interested (first stream terminated with no warning and I had to restart the stream)
