Soon you will discover you are being held by a serial killer about whom you have been writing articles. Hey man, why don’t we just play some board games.

With a new Saw movie being released for the first time in seven years, you gotta get some life threatening puzzle solving somewhere. The official Saw games do not do it justice but what about Saw inspired games?

We come into the picture right as our protagonist, Robert Hawk, get kidnapped and put into a dark room. Still fresh from his car accident, or perhaps it was planned all along, this investigative journalist now has to go through puzzles made by the very man he was chasing, Illusion. Robert must be close to identifying Illusion if he was put in one of his puzzles to die, rather than a criminal that evaded being jailed. If Illusion made one mistake, it would be putting a journalist specifically trying to find out who they are, right in the same building.

Broken Sword 3 - the Sleeping Dragon

Broken Sword 3 - the Sleeping Dragon

Despite the fact that I liked this game, I can’t recommend this game to everyone (again, a ‘Maybe’ or ‘Mixed’ option would be more fitting). The biggest and most noticeable problem is that the game’s controls are not what you think; the point-and-click interface of the previous games is replaced with a weird adventure-game Sims hybrid control scheme, which is something I’ve never seen before. WARNING!!!: I do NOT recommend using the keyboard for this game. Otherwise you’re gonna have a TERRIBLE time and you’ll experience some of the worst controls in gaming history. And this is coming from a person who loves the controls of Fixed-Camera Resident Evil and Tomb Raider 1-6.

Broken Sword 3 is host to some big problems that unfortunately overshadows a lot of the good aspects of the game.

Just like the previous Broken Sword games, the story is decent though not special. The dialogue and voice acting is definitely one of the strongest aspects of the series, and BS 3 has that too. Most of the puzzles range from okay to pretty interesting.

However, the controls are an unholy collection of awful and rubbish. They suck, they suck in every way possible. Combine the bad controls with the terrible camera and you got a special kind of awful. The camera uses weird angels and it switches them constantly. CONSTANTLY. It jumps back and forth, sometimes as much as five times in a few “meters” of road. It’s enough to make you seasick… and it causes you to run the wrong way since what was one direction a second ago is suddenly the opposite direction or sideways. It also prevents you from seeing the things you wish to see.

3- stucks when you go to bathroom for the second time

4- Song stucks in your mind when you see “Mirror mirror on the wall”

There was a lot of item that we can collect but some of them (a lot of them) was not usefull. I guess they are for confuse the player. Not sure…

Cool Mystery game wrapped in an easy to play RPG format. Love exploring the map and seeing Easter eggs and fun comments left by the developer. This game also stood out in that not everything you pick up is useful. This is much more like the real world experience. Wish there is slightly more hint later on in the game, but overall a fun game.

Power Of Language is a suspense text game mainly featuring dialogues. The game is about a case caused by a certain mental illness in the future, and you’d act as a hypnotist to talk to prisoners for investigations that eventually lead to the truth. Besides, you need to be careful of every tiny clue contained in memory scenes. The plot lasts for 40 to 60 minutes.

Runaway, A Road Adventure

Runaway, A Road Adventure

“Runaway” is one of those games people love to argue about. It’s featured in multitude of “favorite” and “best adventure” lists with many players considering it one of the best; yet there are always complaints from the other side of the fence – about puzzles, characters, story… Such division in opinions isn’t undeserved, as the game has some kinks and won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but it has undeniably become a famous title in adventure gaming.

One thing almost no one disagrees on when it comes to “Runaway: Road Adventure” is how gorgeous it is. A mix of 3D and 2D characters and environments creates vivid, rich visuals with some epic backgrounds you’d want to pause and take in for a minute before moving on (some 3D cutscenes, on the other hand, can be eyebrow-raising). The looks of the game became so popular that referring to something being “in a style of Runaway” is, in a way, synonymous with cartoon-styled, intensely colored, and detailed graphics - a large part of an overall attraction for this adventure.

Runaway: A Road Adventure is a point-and-click (P&C) adventure game which, by design, it is no more than your typical P&C game from the ‘90s.

The story centres around Brian Basco, an initially shy and nerdy Physics graduate from New York whose life totally changes the moment he almost runs over an admittedly hot chick, Gina Timmins, with his car. Could this be faith? Taking her quickly to the hospital, Brian soon finds out that the mafia gang is after her as a result of possessing an enigmatic crucifix given by her father which she pledged to protect. From here on out, it is knowable what is about to happen and is already hinted in the title itself: become runaways chased by the mafia whilst trying to decipher the mystery behind the crucifix.

The Hex

The Hex

I wholeheartedly recommend this, as I did with Pony Island. It’s a fascinating story with twists and loads of hidden secrets to track down. If you aren’t good at examining the meta layers, there’s plenty of people on the Steam forum who’ve done the legwork so you can see it for yourselves.

It’s hard to talk about the content without getting into spoilers, and since so much of this game relies on those, I think I’ll just say this: Not everything, or everyone, is what you see at first glance. A number of things within the game/story can be open to interpretation.

This piece of gaming art, a museum piece, that will take you about 6 hours to finish and that looks like it was made by a child manages to pack a lot of fun, a ton of creativity, extraordinary ideas, thoughtful writing, creepy moments and spectacular jabs at the gaming industry and gaming culture as a whole that the entire 3A “gaming industry” couldn’t produce if they hired all the world’s monkeys and resurrected Shakespeare to write them something.

I can’t write a lot in this review because the less you know, the better. The story is very layered through it’s 6 protagonists, residents of the Six Pint Inn, you get to play as, all the genre mashing it does, playing with different game ideas and ridiculing or celebrating gaming tropes in all of them and all the meta, social, gaming culture and industry commentaries it liberally sprinkles through its running time. It’s just entrancing and it’s extremely satisfying getting to the end of The Hex. I really, really can’t write more than this because it would do the game and you, if you decide to play it, a disservice.
