Blackout

Blackout

I don’t know what anyone is talking about. Ive been searching for great horror games for years, and this one is one of my fav short indie games. I dont understand the negative reviews, its has tons of interaction, (tons). Scare factor on point. just a beautiful game all togeather. If you want to find a good horror indie game, look for the ones with negative reviews. people dont know what they are talking about, where as i do. ENJOY,

This game has one of the best jump scares for horror games and I love it. I was absolutely terrified when I played it. Controls aren’t that smooth but it is good enough. Sometimes I do see black lines across the game and according to a friend, it is from the “model” of my character.

Story line wise… I don’t get what happen at all. But still, if you are looking for a walking sim just to scare yourself, this is a ok game!

There are so many good reviews on the plot and the story line and I don’t get why. Personally, the story is a huge disappointment for me. It was obvious from the start what actually happened. The ending is ridiculous - why would it end like this? As far as I’ve seen there is not much variety in the endings.

Sometimes it wasn’t clear what the hell I’m supposed to do or where to go. The place is huge, but you only need to visit couple of places.. The bug with the first crawlspace…ugh…Silly phone talks when you need to talk about various items in the room you hang up and re-dial again. There was so much potential with the ghosts in the hotel. I expected so much more from this.

FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Maiden of Black Water

FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Maiden of Black Water

The best horror game this year.

When i first saw the announcement of this game being released on Steam and modern consoles I was very excited. Years ago I used to play Project Zero on my Xbox original and I finished it quite a few times they were excellent games and very scary, I also enjoyed the third one on my PS2.

This game is just as good if not better I like the fact that the gameplay is something a little bit different. I think the game is creative for requiring the player to use the Camera Obscura, its a really cool way of fighting the ghosts and spirits. To be honest I cant really find many modern horror games that are similar to this one except for a few. The story had me immersed from the beginning and I enjoyed many of the cutscenes, the characters or the girls mostly are awesome I like Yuri she is my favorite one.

Pros:

The camera mechanics

Atmosphere

Sound

Cons:

Playing multiple characters with different stories in one sitting

Repeated and recycled levels and scenes

limited enemies

Recycled enemies

Enemies are easy, extremely predictable, and boring

Story fell flat and feels all over the place.

Characters and enemies are over sexualized and the bouncing breast are distracting. It takes away from the game being a horror genre and more like someone’s creepy fetish.

Controls were sluggish when it came to moving the character around.

TL;DR

This VN is a mixed bag. Very mixed. Some good story, some so-so, good visuals, some software issues. The thumb here is down, but only slightly. Steam needs a neutral score option. See below for the breakdown.

PROS:

  • Not another formulaic high school romance or slice of life. The narrative takes some unexpected and interesting turns in the longer routes.

  • The character designs are appealing and distinctive. The level of detail is middling, but aesthetically I found them pleasing to the eye. Backgrounds are nice enough though some look like retouched photos (I could be wrong).

Story

In this VN, you are a male protagonist you can give a name to. He goes to a town called Thais where he meets three girls: your eleven year-old cousin Yekaterina (or Yeka for short), a rich girl named Velvet and your ordinary, average girl named Alannah. You have to make choices in this VN as to which girl you would want to spend time with, whether it’s changing Yeka’s life or trying to help Velvet win Alannah’s heart. Aside from a few repeated moments, no route will feel like a 1:1 copy.

Pros:

1. You wake up in a strange room. It’s bland and colorless aside from you and a mysterious companion. Is this some kind of purgatory? Did you get kidnapped and you must play some sick man’s game? That’s the beauty of how it introduces you to the story, it’s a show don’t tell situation. It is done well where you must figure out what is going on, leaving you piecing together clues, flashbacks, and maybe information from Beryl. From the first half of the game, you think it’s just an escape room and you must escape from your captor, but there is more to that. It is a story revolving around regrets and losing yourself, and it does an excellent job in conveying that.

First review… and gotta say I’m not very confident I can leave a review that will satisfy it’s readers, nor give the game the actual credit it deserves… but here I go any hooo….

This game, in my opinion, was AWESOME! It made me laugh! It made me mad! It made me cringe! It made me gag! It even made me tearful! Lol!

Even though the game is quite short (but not too short that you wanna refund every game in your library, just to make a point), the story line itself makes up for that tenfold! And even though the story is bitter sweet with no real “happy ending” in the true sense, the happy endings it does offer are still worth the effort of replaying and getting them!

Hitchhiker - A Mystery Game

Hitchhiker - A Mystery Game

Philosophical road trip, where the word “trip” might be a part of the word “trippy”. Surreal and thought-provoking, with phenomenal storytelling, it’s definitely worth a playthrough for those who like to ponder on things.

You start as a hitchhiker in someone’s car. There’s little information given on who you are, where are you and, most importantly, why are you there – in that moment. As the ride unfolds, there comes the realization that you’re searching for something – yourself? Missing partner? An event in the past? Lost memories? At first, it’s unclear and seems surreal, as odd conversations with drivers seem to be hinting at something deeper while you try to stay rooted in reality and figure out what exactly happened. As the rides with different, strange companions continue, you’ll eventually find yourself threading on the thin line between dreamlike and real still, however, searching for the answers to this mystery, which in itself is no longer solid…Will you ever find answers? Perhaps strange people, new places, odd clues and lots of philosophical musings will help to point you in the right direction. Or not. In the end, you’ll still get to enjoy one bad-ass road trip showing beautiful scenery of the great United States’ cross-county drive.

I don’t know what to make of this games storytellers.. the game itself is a laid back low key Indie AA, decent production values. Not the best Indie AA I have ever played but a fair attempt.

I’m really on the fence between a yes and no recommendation.. okay so MASSIVE STORY SPOILER WARNING:

! ### So the story itself is very chilled out, I enjoyed it for the most part.. until you get to the end and you have been doing all this for your dying girlfriend whom you know was cheating on you?? .. WHY THE FLIP DO I CARE IF SHES ALIVE OR DEAD? She cheated.. cheating is a horrific thing and instantly disqualifies her as a valid person.. meaning everything she ever said to me about me, was a lie. So with that in mind.. and note that guy didn’t go and kill them both, which may have been a fun aspect if it was included in the game.. but not only does he not kill them both, but he simps out and goes to her bedside..?! WHO THE FLIP CARES.. DIE ALREADY!.. life isn’t like what these Devs imagine.. ohw you once told someone you loved them and then they cheated on you, let’s all be friends?? Obviously they felt nothing for you or they wouldn’t have cheated! and at that point.. WHO CARES? You died in that second you cheated.. there is no sorry.. the idea of this is horrific.. No.. a hundred times no.. this game while having good points.. just stole the price of it off me.. can’t believe you would write such a weak pathetic character.. compassion?.. where was her compassion while she is taking ** ** *** **** on holiday.. no excuse, this is the modern age, everyone’s got a phone on them, it takes 5 minutes to make a phone call and done.

I’m enjoying this game, it’s a really interesting concept! I’ve not seen a game that uses FMV in this way. It is cultishly retro, that for me is it’s quirky charm and it should be judged on that basis. There are one or two bugs but it’s a hell of a story. Thumbs up on the whole! Worth seeing through for the story reveals. Glad it’s in my library.

I really want to love this game, but it is not easy at the moment.

Plenty of bugs make it hard to play the game.

The first fix has bin dropped a day after release and made the videos play, but there is a lot of things, still.

If you want to give it a shot, use an controller - mouse does not work and you run into gamebreaking bugs if you do.

I recoment the game to the extend of waiting for an later time and you will enjoy it for sure.

The acters are great, the story is creative and the gameplay is fun.

Horns of Fear

Horns of Fear

SPOILER WARNING - I just made it to the end of Horns of Fear, and while I’m only currently at 82%, I have to say that this game is definitely worth your time and the couple of dollars it currently costs. I’m honestly surprised at the lack of attention this game has received within the gaming community, as I think it deserves a much larger fanbase. I plan to continue returning to the game to try and make it to 100% and see what other possible endings may be available, as I felt there were many different angles the story could have taken - there were little nuggets of information and clues hidden around the mansion, and the 90’s horror point-and-click style gameplay gave it both a nostalgic and creepy atmosphere. The puzzles are actually harder in the beginning - I spent probably 45 minutes to an hour determining the probability for the Pasiphae puzzle because it never gave any indication that the pieces were in the right order. It wasn’t until I gave up and made it to the doll head puzzle that I realized how the puzzles were connected that the Pasiphae puzzle never gives you any obvious indicator that the pieces are in the right order - you just need to know the story.

It was alright

Pros

The graphics and art style was interesting

There were some nice scares around the beginning, before the whole 4th wall thing and it got a little silly

Cons:

Some of the puzzles didn’t make a lot of sense. Maybe half of them were logical, but the rest were either random guessing or the hints were so obscure that even after finishing and replaying it, I still haven’t actually seen what the hint was. Also, there was a puzzle that was a hint to another puzzle, but the problem was that there was no indicator if the player solved the first puzzle correctly or not. So it wasn’t very useful as a hint

Knee Deep

Knee Deep

Knee Deep is a point and click adventure game revolving around a murder mystery. Set in a small backwater town called Cypress Knee in Florida, you control the three main characters as they investigate an actor’s murder, digging deep into a world of political corruption, blackmail, intrigue and even a bit of sci fi weirdness. The story is accompanied by nice graphics, atmospheric music and a unique take on gameplay where the story takes place as if it was a theater play complete with moving sets and all. The game is available on PS4, XBox One, and PC via Steam, which is the version I played for this review.

DISCLAIMER: This is a review of the first episode. No score will be given. A full review of the entire season will follow once all three episodes have been released.

It’s a good thing that I’m playing this game on a hot summer evening. It’s also interesting that I live just a few miles away from one of the largest swampland areas in Europe and the humidity, as always, is unbearable. It’s just curious that there are no mosquitoes tonight. All in all, a perfect situation to immerse myself into Knee Deep, a self-proclaimed swamp noir in three acts. And I am immersed in a matter of seconds. The first thing that strikes me is the music, a brilliantly moody mixture of American folk and blues. I start the game up and I am immediately seated in a theater. I silence my mobile phone out of respect for the actors. As the curtain rises on the stage, I find myself in a backwater Florida town of Cypress Knee. It’s a grim start as a washed-up actor has hanged himself from a tower next to a local inn.

Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma

Zero Escape: Zero Time Dilemma

This is, without any doubt whatsoever, the dumbest story I have ever experienced in my entire life.

And I’m not even disappointed. I’m actually impressed by the amount of effort that was spent on writing every single detail of this ginormous pile of garbadge. Congratulations to everyone involved.

The disjointed narrative structure makes it impossible to care about anything. Characters will constantly reference things you haven’t seen yet or specifically chose not to do. Imagine if someone told you to direct a movie. But you’ve never read the script before until they hand it to you one page at a time and completely out of order. There’s basically no coherent story up until maybe the last 25% of the game. At which point it all comes together on the premise that nothing mattered anyways, that there was never supposed to be any story in the first place. The arbitrary decision points and branches just boil down to a check list. Sometimes it even feels like you’re playing a 90s Sierra game: “Do you want to go left or right?”. “Left”. “An anvil drops on your head! Game over”.

game looks awful, is poorly structured with weird flag triggers that’re hard to find and the story is barely passable imo.
