Omega Labyrinth Life

Omega Labyrinth Life

Let me start off by saying that OLL owners who are giving this game a negative Steam review despite kinda liking the game = a sign of extreme ignorance. Not only because of what happened in the run-up towards this game’s initial planned release on Sony’s platform, but because THIS is the type of game which will be scrutinized the most. Hardcore violence A-ok, anime girls rubbing some unidentified objects between their soft, well-endowed bosoms in order to ID them? HIGH ALERT.

So this isn’t dev greed, but you who needs to understand that this kind of content has a price tag for good reasons and shouldn’t be judged on an equal scale as other games which do not have these unfair development difficulties to deal with. Think of it as a “BS fee” and please don’t let it stop you from buying / supporting this type of game, because not doing so = they won’t be getting English translations in the future anymore.

Very much recommended! Don’t let the ecchi premise fool you into thinking this is a shallow game. It’s actually one of the most feature-complete roguelites I’d ever played and it would in fact stand on its own just fine without the pervy aspect. It’s both challenging and demands creativity in your equipment loadout but also relaxing and with lots of little ways of making progress. It’s forgiving of mistakes but doesn’t let you relax. I’d say the game isn’t necessarily “beginner friendly” to the genre, but is definitely not beginner-punishing like most roguelites. The gardening and slice of life stuff feels good and wholesome too instead of being tacked-on.

Remember PlayStation Vita? No? Well… you’re not alone. Many people don’t. And that’s the problem. Even though SONY reclaimed their fans with PlayStation 4, which is pretty much the only console on the modern market with both decent hardware and strong video games library, Vita ended up being forgotten and obsolete. Let’s not go too deep into the commercial stuff, though. Even though it’s completely beyond me how Nintendo can sell so many Switch units while it has even less games than Vita. Anyway, the important thing is – there were some publishers, who did their very best to support Vita. And since Vita failed… it felt like all those nice titles were supposed to sink with it. Thankfully, IF-chan (Idea Factory) decided to do their very best again. This time by porting all those Vita titles to personal computers. For everybody to enjoy. Naturally, here comes another one.

Beta Tester Here,

This might look like a cute story and it is but it can be at certain points hmm…creepy?disturbing? when dealing with people whom you know have a screw loose in the head. Some themes can include stalking as comedy so if you are uncomfortable with that, you have been warned.

I think the opening starts off pretty depressing and can be relatable to many people…

You’ll soon find an urgency to roaming the dungeouns in search of spices. There are many points I found laughing and embrassing(you’ll soon see why) to read it. To say anymore would be to ruin the chances of you enjoying it but I can still say the writing of the story is the strongest point of this game. The cutscenes are done in a visual novel way.

Tangledeep

TL; DR Summary: A well-developed game with a wonderful soundtrack, funny devs (Jim), beautiful art style reminding player of SNES days, large number of classes, and a difficulty fitting for this masterpiece with an option to play without permadeath worth the full price and then some.

Early Access Review:

The devs are amazing and show care for their product. The game is still in development and I still feel like I’m playing a high-quality product. With that said, I am pleased to have picked up this game and experience it for myself as every cent was worth it. After placing over 300 hours into the game, I feel it’s time to make a quality review.

I usually do not leave reviews, but not only is this game amazing, it has received, in my genuine opinion, the most ridiculous and unreasonable negative reviews I have had the displeasure of reading among Steam reviews. This unfairly misrepresents the rating of this game, which should be higher, and would be if it weren’t for such reviews.

Let’s talk about difficulty first. I’ve heard things ranging from “game is too easy” to “game is too hard,” from “game doesn’t give good instruction” to “game kills you in unfair ways.” In my experience, the difficulty is right where it needs to be by default, and furthermore, there are in-game modifiers you can add to make it easier or harder. With no modifiers, just playing the game as it was intended to be played, I beat the main game on my 2nd try (first character died), and Shara’s story (which is likely way harder) on my first try. And addressing some of the previous concerns, again, as long as you play efficiently after learning the basics, the game is beatable and it won’t be luck that causes you to die; it is very fair. If you play well, you win, and if you make mistakes, you lose. That summarizes most fair and well-made games in existence. And again, there are modifiers to make the game easier/harder, and there are tips for when you die (for example, remember to use your healing flask, make sure you grab a ranged weapon, try not to fight in areas with the “Tricky” difficulty which means you are an area above your level, etc.) And it’s really not that hard to understand that the point of the game is to reach the highest floor of Tangledeep… you literally start on Floor 1, what do you expect? And regarding the “dying in unfair ways” claim that I’ve read, someone got mad that the game is apparently too easy until you fight a monster that reflects damage back to you and makes you kill yourself. So, pay attention to the extremely obvious shield effect, or perhaps read the modifiers the monster has before mindlessly swinging at it? Even aside from that one modifier, one should be checking the possible resistances or other shenanigans champion monsters (mini-bosses) and bosses have in order to play the game optimally. If you go in swinging without thinking, of course you lose. That’s not on the game, that’s on you.

Really enjoyable I’ve had a hard time finding a Mystery Dungeon that doesn’t have frustrating UI, Legion’s Crawl is smooth and fast to play. I wish it had more shortcut keys so it could be played entirely with keyboard

One Way Heroics

One Way Heroics

It’s been a while since I’ve played the base game, so this review might contain some bits from the DLC.

First of all, this game is a relatively simple roguelike with a twist: the world is constantly being consumed from the left, forcing the player to continue moving to the right. The base objective for winning is to defeat the Demon Lord, who will generally pop up to fight you after certain amounts of time has elapsed and retreat in a bit if neither is dead. There’s a couple of other winning conditions available, but it’s definitely a spoiler. The Plus DLC adds some alternate campaigns to fighting the Demon Lord, which increases the winning conditions even more.

So, I bought this game a long time ago thinking it was going to be a game where I ran in one direction trying to stay alive.

I was not disappointed in the slightest.

One-way Heroics offers some of the dumbest, funniest, and rediculous gameplay I have ever seen from a rouge-like game.

Slight spoilers below, you have been warned

-Hey, I know you’re new, but you’re supposed to save the world from the left side of the screen since this is sidescrolling and all, and for some reason the left side of the screen is eating everything. GOOD LUCK!

Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate

Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate

Intro: I want to preface this by saying that I don’t think Shiren is a fair game, or that this is an amazing port of Shiren.

However as a roguelike enthusiast I personally enjoy this game a lot. And I think that this is fairly competent port. It has borderless windowed mode with the ability to resize to whatever you want or need and has multiple control options (no rebinding outside of using Steam’s controller configurator though). There’s also some hidden controls so you might want to just press keys to see what they do, for example the game doesn’t tell you that the C key can be used for quick scouting a room without needing to go through the menu.

Shiren is not a roguelike, it’s a grinding game

I had heard good things about the serie of games “Shiren the Wanderer” in the past, and I’ve always been a fan of roguelikes, so when this newest instalment was ported on Steam, I thought it would be a good idea to try it out, and get my first taste of this “roguelike serie”.

Unfortunately, it soon became clear that the game is not at all what it says on the box.

Shiren is not a roguelike

A run of Shiren makes you starts at level 1 and you’re tasked with climbing up a randomly generated dungeon (the titular Tower of Fortune). It is played turn-by-turn, so you’re supposed to think before you act, in order to escape the various traps and monsters that you’re gonna meet, using your wits and your inventory. If you’re not good enough, you will die, be ejected from the tower, and lose everything, thus being forced to start again from the very beginning. This description, at first, would indeed seems to fit the mold of a roguelike, so very much something I would enjoy playing.

Voyage to Farland

Voyage to Farland

This is a terrific game. I haven’t played the Japanese Mystery Dungeon games this takes it’s inspiration from. I guess I’ve been missing out.

Voyage to Farland is a turn-based roguelike. It’s very bare bones. There are no classes, skills, stats, gold or shops. You are just your level, hit points, and whatever you pick up in the dungeon. In exchange for all that Voyage to Farland focuses more on consumable item abilities. The items you find control enemy pacing, placement, movement, etc. There is very little direct damage. Gameplay is focused on tactics, exploration, and inventory management.

What this game needs is a kickstarter to hire a decent artist and get a decent soundtrack.

those are the biggest glaring problems with this game.

Pretty great for a one man dev team and It will scratch that mystery dungeon itch.

Alchemic Dungeons DX

Last week I bought the original Alchemic Dungeons on 3DS. Then just yesterday I found out this came out and bought it immediately. It is challenging and fair. Every time I died it was because I screwed up and didn’t use the right tactic. I love this game and I plan on playing it many many hours.

Real player with 91.2 hrs in game

Criminally underrated game.

While it looks simple and generic and starts very easy, the final 3 dungeons offer a good challenge. While it seems like a relatively generic roguelike, the crafting system does add a lot of depth to resource management, and while it looks simplistic it will keep you on your toes. I also think the UI is reallly good and easy to sue when you get used to it .

It also has a lot of distinct classes (8 initially with a secret one to)

Nova-111

Nova-111

I think this is possibly the most underrated game in my Steam library. The gimmick of fusing turn-based and real time play is an excellent one, and I think they did a really good job of exploring ways to mix the two.

Often it can be played akin to a turn based dungeon crawler, but the enemies, bullets and environmental hazards that move in real time add a bit of pressure and force you to move quickly. It’s not dissimilar to Crypt of the NecroDancer in that sense; enemies have attack patterns that aren’t too hard to learn, but the gimmick means you can’t always take your time and can be forced into mistakes. The time pressure is lower here though and combat is quite tactical as you use the environment or other enemies' attacks against your foes. Individual enemies are easy to handle once you know how, but in varied combinations they’re more interesting to fight.

Real player with 16.0 hrs in game

Very cool game. At first it felt like a Roguelike, a beautiful one I most add. Mixes turn based with real time mechanics. Your in some kind of cybernetic world and you meet characters on your journey. There’s also exploration which you find hidden chambers and try to find new powers.

As you play new mechanics appear. Which later on you start to remember section you could get to before but with theses new power you earn, you can now get to new places.

The levels aren’t random generated, there’s no perma-death, so it’s not what I thought it was, a roguelike. Almost all deterministic which makes it more of a puzzle-like but you have mechanics that makes it tactical like unit dodging, lasers, time shifting, grid jump, etc… I love how you dodge and the unit’s mouth that snaps at you and misses, so cool. But still it does look like a roguelike so it should appeal to some roguelike fans. Let’s call it a roguelite, which has some roguelike elements.
