New Ice York

New Ice York

This game is so much more than I expected it to be. At first, playing it- I was charmed by how weird it was but after playing through it, I found myself feeling connected to this universe and the characters within it. It’s intuitive- familiar, but totally different. Refreshingly fun, and an overall great release by magicdweedo, an artist I’ve really enjoyed since Mealmate™. Make sure to check out the soundtrack, too- it’s really catchy!

New Ice York has deceptively good writing. The first chapter is unfortunately slow, which is a bad problem for a game of this length to have, but that slowness does its job of lulling you into a familiarity with the characters that it uses as a platform to build off of. NIY unfurls in a way similar to Frog Fractions or magicdweedoo’s last major game, Ticket: breaking its own rules and shuffling weird mechanics around. Where the former games engage themselves in a game of zany one-upsmanship, though, New Ice York’s treatment of mechanics is much more narrative and constrained. Detective has an oblique resemblance to Deadly Premonition’s Francis York Morgan / Twin Peak’s Dale Cooper, and similar to those stories New Ice York’s descent into surrealism takes on a personal significance in the quest of the protagonist.

Just watch a let’s play it’s a better use of your time and free! The game is bad the storytelling is atrocious. However, the sound design, and art are good. Don’t waste your few dollars on this unless you’re really into startlingly sweet main menu jump scares because that’s the only thing here that will thrill you.

The Lot

The Lot

Take an atmospheric journey in a fresh, critically acclaimed format of a hand-drawn point-and-click comic-book. When a freeloading owner of a blue Mustang drives through without paying for the ticket, Harry Hunter, freelance parking attendant, ventures inside the lot to Make. Him. Pay. ™.

Just like our other interactive comics, upon finishing the game you can print out your entire adventure path in the form of an actual 30-50 page comic book. In response to (very positive! :) ) player feedback on previous games, this adventure includes multiple paths, endings and side-quests spanning thousands of lines of dialog tightly packed in a 2 hour narrative.

Gameplay

  • every interaction in the game world (such as talking, picking up items, using objects etc.) creates a new comic panel, furthering the story

  • hundreds of unique hand-drawn (and hand-scanned!) content rich panels for all the various combinations

  • improved replay value with multiple endings, sidequests, achievements and many different ways to solve the game mysteries

  • when the player ends the game, he is given the option to print out his gameplay in a comic book format

  • a new game+ option with a developer commentary track when you finish the game

Deep Night Detective - Chapter One

Deep Night Detective - Chapter One

A very fun and addicting game so far. I can say for certain though, there were a couple of times where I couldn’t progress due to some bugs.

The pros. it’s a great and charming game! The dialogue is amazing and charming, and with very funny observations from the Detective that adds to their personality. The music is great and how it’s used in this game is well done, especially with the interrogation segment with Mrs. Bordeaux. The controls, though a little confusing in the beginning, is comfortable to use when you get used to it and when you do it controls well.

im honestly hyped for chapter 2

The pixel art, the story, the gameplay… it’s all just so god damn good.

I’m a sucker for any sort of 2D platformers, so I’m kinda biased, but this game is amazing. It can be a bit buggy, and I’ll list all the bugs I found later on, but other than those bugs (one which made me have to reset and play the whole chapter from the beginning) every part of this game is perfectly executed.

Anyways, here’s some feedback:

Every character is interesting and so are the relationships between them. I hate reading through stuff and I tend to just mash through all of the dialogue, but I can’t in this game. Reading about how supernatural stuff works in this game is so much fun and so is asking people questions. The whole thing with the case book (I don’t remember what it’s called) makes it really easy to keep track of what’s going on and really keep you interested in the case.

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

This game sparked my love of Danganronpa and it is without a doubt one of my favorite games. I guess I could go so far as to say it -is- my favorite game. I’ve put 152 hours into the game, I’ve completed all the achievements. I’ve been through every game in the game universe. There is Danganronpa 2, Danganronpa Another Episode, Danganronpa V3 and then the anime. I’ve collected different things from this game. I can’t recommend it more. It’s hard to define but

This is a murder mystery game. It’s deep, chilling and brutal at times. You have to collect evidence and then present it at the class trial, convicting one of your classmates and the trial is rife with things you need to do in order to succeed. You have a trust meter. If it runs out, your classmates no longer believe anything you have to say. I highly…HIGHLY encourage you try it. This one game I bought on a whim, captured my heart. So yeah, of course I’m going to give it a massively positive review!

Misadventures of Laura Silver

Misadventures of Laura Silver

PLEASE SUPPORT THESE DEVELOPERS AND THIS GAME! I couldn’t recommend it more. I’m a massive fan of detective noir themes and everything involving 1890-1959, so this game was exactly what I was looking for. Like a visual novel sent from heaven.

PROS: Just about everything else.

-The art is unique and memorable. Every character design, pose, emotion, everything is absolutely fantastic. The artist has fantastic use of fashion from the time period, as well as strong shape and color language in their designs. I was attached to the cast the moment I saw the steam page, it had me totally hooked.

The Misadventures of Laura Silver :Chapter 1 is billed as a visual novel created by 3 college students in their free time. By that standard, it is an admirable product.

Summary: OK visual novel when things worked, but bugs ruined the game for me.

Basics: You follow the protagonist, Laura Silver, through her investigations in 1935 Czechoslovakia. Although it has supernatural themes, they are treated in a very matter-of-fact way and the game is not at all scary. You make choices along the way. Some matter, but most do not. The art style is consistent and the music is a bit minimal but adds to the ambiance. The writing is OK, but does feel awkward and clunky at times. The overall effect that of a fair to good visual novel.

Hair of the Dog

Hair of the Dog

This game is right up my alley! From the very beginning it oozes charm and hilarity. The pace is swift and the characters intriguing. I’ve smiled constantly and laughed out loud many times. It delivers straight away and is delightfully observed too - for anyone into history, literature, cinema. I think I’ll have to watch Tall Story Games closely and see what they do next!

I played this game after enjoying the demo for Lucy Dreaming - so much so that I joined the kick starter for it! This is a lovely game, beautifully made and with a great, dark sense of humour. The fact that this was made in just 2 weeks makes it even more impressive! A few of the puzzles really had me scratching my head (pun intended!) but it was always just difficult enough to be engaging, rather than infuriating.

If you liked this, then I highly recommend Lucy Dreaming.

Even among a lot of releases in Steam, pure text adventures are very rare. The game is more like a treasure hunt than survival horror. It’s not difficult to find one or two ways to survive. However if trying to see remaining endings (12 in all) and death situations, you need to get into undescribed riddles, which are a sort of situation puzzles that can be finished by just 5 actions at least. Short, but funny. While the game lacks typing history and save function (well, maybe unnecessary), I love the unique minimal art, the new style killer cleansuit-guy, the atmosphere of slovenly lonesome man’s life, and so much cynical humor. Yes, in old days game storytellers were self-deprecatingly like this for some reason.

Dude, look, I’m busy today. Can we reschedule the day you come and try to kill me? Maybe when I have a bunch of finals?

I’m sure that all of us at least has thought about what we would do if someone broke into our home. If someone dared to try and murder you one day in the one place you thought was safe. Concocting plans and placing helpful objects hidden around the house so no matter where you are, they won’t take you by surprise. Though will you ever be ready? Thinking of the situation beforehand is way different than actually being in it. Such as practicing for a presentation will not definitely cause you to not be nervous the day of, actually being in the situation of a killer after you will most likely not be a calm experience.
