ARMORED HEAD

ARMORED HEAD

This game was my go in blind purchase of the week. It is so cheap and the content that it delivers is well worth the asking price. I am having a lot of fun with this frantic arena FPS. You get to double jump, bullet time slo-mo kill vast swathes of tin robot armies which come in a variety of fun shapes and sizes. You get an arsenal of 9 guns, some of which you can dual-wield and all of which have weight and a distinct feel to them. Once you are done working out all the little secrets the game has to offer and self-tutor yourself in the primary and secondary functions of each gun and survive all 30 waves and boss fights, you then get a little something extra. Don’t want to spoil anything, you will have to get there yourself. Bear in mind that the game MUST BE BEATEN IN ONE SITTING. But there are 3 checkpoints along the way which you can start from when you inevitably die on your run.

Armored Head is a fluid, fun and well-realized indie shooter developed solely by Egor Rezenov in Unity. Taking the role of a gladiator bot, you have to prove your worth against waves of opponents consisting of various bots. It is clear that Egor took his time to polish both the aesthetic and mechanic sides of his game, thus Armored Head provides around three hours of enjoyment for those interested in the genre.

Even though it is a wave-based shooter that takes place in a single arena designed for the purpose, it does not go on forever. The goal is to survive for 30 rounds and face the final boss, after which you are granted a prize and are free to explore or leave the premises. The arsenal for the task at hand consists of ten weapons which are presented to you gradually at the start of specific waves. You collect coins throughout the game which are either dropped by defeated opponents or found within the boxes scattered around, then use them at your will to unlock various helpful features of the arena. While most of the opponents are melee-only fighters of varying size and strength, there are also ranged shooters, fliers and droppers, as well unique bosses. Your abilities extend to dodge-jumping, double-jumping and slowing the action down for a brief amount of time; but further collecting in the form of pills is required to gain the necessary energy for utilizing them.

I’ve been looking forward to this game since I got my hands on a super early version at Day of the Devs 2018. The game has come a long way since then, and has turned into a beautifully crafted world with a story that you must piece together by finding memories throughout the game areas.

If you played the demo of the game, you got a single short level where you were able to power up real quickly. The final version spreads out the powering up over the course of the entire game, making it feel like a true metroidvania. You’ll pick up powers such as double jumps, dashes, and hacking abilities that let you manipulate certain things within the game. There are also a total of 5 different weapons to find. I finished the game in about 9 hours of play time.

Really went into this game wanting to like it and I’m mixed.

-The Demo-

I played the demo since I love neon and synthetic world kinds of aesthetics (Tron, Fract OSC, Heavy Bullets, Reboot, ect). It just has a cool world look/tone and feel. I’m for it.

Real good conveyance for where to go and what to do, and the ability progression was so well paced and rewarding.

Great demo, I was excited for this game ever since.

-The Game-

Playing this game still has a cool look/tone and feel. I really like the main character’s flashes of light, the particle effects and jitter. The world is a particle effects display that is so enjoyable.

Welcome to the Polyverse

Great game, enjoying it thoroughly (still getting used to some of the mechanics). I can see the dev is really trying something different here. The low-poly aesthetic that is increasing in popularity actually makes sense if the player is in a simulation as this game suggests. Well done and I hope to see much more as I explore.

TL:DR: If you want a dark twin-stick shooter with a unique 2.5D art style, atmosphere like Splatter, and The Hong Kong Massacre/Hotline Miami-esque challenge put up by each individual enemy being almost on par with you if not for the tricks up your sleeve such as visibility, as well as slow-mo and sliding through to gun down tight rooms and corridors, it’s hard to go wrong here.

It also works well if you’re just looking for any fast-paced twin-stick shooter like I was.

Pretty good twin-stick shooter. A lovely, detailed 2.5D art style and a great electronic soundtrack I’m yet to upload to YouTube (with the developer’s blessing, of course) set a dark atmosphere for some mindless, on-your-toes killing sprees interspersed with philosophical musings and societal jabs that can be uncomfortably (in a good, thinking way) prodding. You just might learn a thing or two about schizophrenic thinking along the way, or pick up on deeper things using such knowledge to read between the lines, or even see a secret coming. After a slight and needed AI nerf, the fast-paced gameplay does a good job of making your potential and consistency the main “RNG” factors deciding whether you’ll complete a level or not, much like other twin-sticks such as Hotline Miami, Redie, and The Hong Kong Massacre, in that at the end of a level you actually have to ask yourself “Wait, I did it this time?”. The later levels' layouts can get slightly frustrating, but it’s nothing you can’t literally bait and slide your way out of. The game will test you on mastery and consistent execution of its gameplay mechanics, and you will be shocked at how much faster you can run through the game a second time as a result of learning how to play; you wouldn’t suspect you’d be learning and thinking meanwhile, but you are.

I GIVE OUT FREE GAME KEYS AND MERCHANDISE TO DISQUS USERS COMMENTING ANYWHERE ON MY SITE, KEEP READING.

So I caught this game in my suggested log by total chance. Seeing the blistering play and cool header image made me want to check out a sample, and ShotX was cool enough to chat about his one-man hate game and give me a play. Kontrakt is NOT for bad mad provincials. That means, if you suck DO NOT PLAY THIS. It’s extremely challenging and will RUIN you in a few moments. The graphics have a cool late-1990s feel, the glitched soundtrack was made by the developer and also rules, but the play will keep you coming. It’s rather simple. You take out contracts on hits and kill all the bodyguards in each level before you get to your target and move on. Play is FAST and a single shot can kill you at times. He just added an arcade-type form of play called the “Devil’s Game” so let’s see if you can beat me on the leaderboard. If you want to read more of what I have to say and check out some screenshots I took, as well as a video of play from the developer himself, go to the link below and SUPPORT THIS GAME:
