Gabriel Knight® 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned

Gabriel Knight® 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned

Outstanding game! Outstanding series! If you enjoy the classic point-n-click, give this one a shot. If you like it, try the other two games. If not, move on.

Rather than writing separate reviews for each game, I’m going to briefly cover the entire series in a few paragraphs.

With their love/hate, yin/yang, brain vs. brawn relationship, Gabriel and Grace steal the show! I can tell series' creator Jane Jensen really enjoyed using this to spruce up the character cohesion and back-n-forth banter. In my opinion, this is by far the most enjoyable aspect of the series.

Cozy, atmosphere rich and intriguing. Gabriel Knight 3 is set in a small village in France where you as Gabriel and Grace are investigating the abduction of an infant child. With an interface not seen in any other major point-n-click adventure (to my knowledge) where you hover around like a drone camera you can really immerse yourself in the environments of the game while investigating with great accuracy, As far as adventure games go, this game has it all, the plot is like any good Agatha Christie novel mixed with occult and religious elements. Add to this, extremely well done voice acting which made me laugh so many times, and great puzzles and a gallery of memorable characters, this game will make you want to check in to a hotel in rural France asap and start looking for clues and interrogating hotel guests. And yes, the music is amazing and superbly fits the game world. This game is one of my all time favorites, but you will probably need a open mind, if you start playing it in 2020. Please do.

This game is Great! It starts out pretty slow but after a few levels can get pretty hard. 10/10 would recommend. good game for the price! I love the little hats that you get after each level! It would be nice to be told when you get one though. That’s my only problem. Edit: The music is a little boring and gets old after a while. However, the mute button helps. ;)

Kathy Rain: Director’s Cut

Kathy Rain: Director’s Cut

Welcome to crazy town

Kathy Rain Director’s Cut is a re-release of the original game with slight enhancements and bonuses.

The game is great and owners of the original got a good discount but still it would’ve been nice to make this a free upgrade. There’s not enough enhancements or new content to justify the price.

Story and gameplay are things which makes this game awesome.

Kathy is a troubled young woman living with her christian roommate. Kathy’s mother is locked up in a mental institution, she smokes and has a bike. A very lovable character with amazing sense of humor and the whole story about her is just amazing. The game starts with a funeral and since then Kathy embarks on a journey to dig some stuff about her family’s past.

Kathy Rain is a point n click adventure set in the 90s but with modernized controls over the early classics that we love.

The story, characters and dialogues are very good. The puzzles aren’t too hard but are pretty fun and creative. So if you love point N click but feel rusty over the puzzle solving this game is excellent to come back. The truth is that this game is a must play for every point N click lover or jst anyone who wants to dive into the genre.

This director’s cut edition is the definitive way to play it. Fix everything and adds new content. Also if you have played the original around four years ago like me, you’ll enjoy replaying this edition.

The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight® Mystery

The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight® Mystery

A game I revisited from my childhood. A FMV classic from the 90s.

It’s an incredible piece of work. Completely engrossing and uncompromising. (It didn’t actually take 152 hours, I left it on the launch screen - but expect a good 25-30 hours if you don’t use a walkthrough)

You play just over half the game as the title character, Gabriel Knight. Knight is a reluctant shadow hunter following the events of the first game, Sins of the Fathers. Living in his ancestral town in Germany, he is asked to investigate the killings of a young girl near Munich. The town folk are convinced it was a werewolf.

GK2 is the ‘Star Wars:Empire Strikes Back’ of the series, a really strong follow up to a fantastic first game, that may actually be even better than the original.

I’m on my 4th or 5th playthrough of this game since it came out many years ago, and it has singularly spawned my interest in topics such as Bavarian/German history, Werewolves and Wagner. It’s a ‘pilgrimage’ type game, which has me coming back and that in itself tells you a lot of about the quality of this game if i’m willing to do it over and over again.

Broken Sword 2 - the Smoking Mirror: Remastered

Broken Sword 2 - the Smoking Mirror: Remastered

A true point&click classic

This game is a true classic. This is my favorite point&click game. Probably one of the reasons is that it was my first. I fell in love with this game right from the beginning and couldn’t stop playing. Remember that when it came there was no internet and youtube walkthroughs, there was no hints and highlighted objects. I spent couple of weeks or even more until I completed it (I understood only half or less English text back then and couldn’t understand a single spoken word) and it felt so rewarding and this was the day when I knew I want more drawn point&click adventures.

Even though my guess is that most of the people who’ll buy this game are familiar with the version that came out 19 years ago, I’d just assume there are new gamers who want to know whether it’s worth checking out. So, here we go!

Broken Sword 2 - the Smoking Mirror is an adventure game that has its fair share of flaws. But oh boy, is it fun!

The game was released in 1997, back in the golden era of point and click adventure games (after the huge success of the first game), and I’m so happy to say it’s aged quite well. In fact, I found the character portraits/facial expressions which are exclusive to the remastered edition completely unnecessary. Most of them are plain bad (starting with George’s and Nico’s) while others bear no resemblance to the actual characters they represent.

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father®

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father®

Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father is a classic Point & Click Adventure game from Sierra and has two more games in the series. Though I was certainly playing Sierra games when this first came out… I had never played this game. I had always heard how fantastic it was but just never got around to it. So I finally purchased it on STEAM and gave it a go.

The story and characters are absolutely fantastic in this game. The story isn’t overly predictable and has several twists. The characters are well developed and have a lot of interesting backstory and personality. There really isn’t anything I would complain about in terms of the story. This game is not a short game and offers a lot of dialogue and reading material. The dialogues while they do actually end up being pretty extensive are generally revealed in relatively short snippets for you to discover over the course of the first 6 (of the overall 10) in-game days. There are some dialogue options that are optional and serve only to flesh out the story and character more but, I really liked and appreciated that they were there for just that reason.

I haven’t played much and I’m not sure if I intend to play much more but I think I can recommend this game all the same from what I’ve experienced so far. The writing is competent which is important because this Is a visual novel. That said, it is not necessarily presented in a way which is comfortable or easily digested (a majority of the time, you have to click through action menus consisting of “thinking”, “investigation”, and “move” to determine your next action within a linear set of actions that all must be taken to progress the game. This can fluctuate from frustrating to engaging depending on the scene and how much dialogue there is. I can’t help but think this system needs to be refined a bit. That said, for me, this game’s visuals where a treat. I adore the pre-rendered low poly look and their dedication to that style even in the character art. In an era of graphic obsessed pc gaming, this a bold and unique move which came to me as a fresh change of pace. I absolutely recommend this game to anyone seeking a new type of visual novel with a bold approach to its presentation.
