How much of this game I’ve played: 12 Hours, 35 minutes

How I’ve played so much: I had a pre-ordered non-steam copy.

Completed Main story, not the super secret boss area.

Here’s why you’d be interested in this game: Good rhymes, good story, old school gameplay.

Good rhymes: If you haven’t heard of BeNeVoLeNcE, you might have heard of Mega Ran - he’s known for clean nerdcore rhymes over chiptune beats and melodies. Hip Hop by both is featured in the game, and it’s not an “afterthought” like it might be in some games - the music is interwoven in with the story - it’s actually rewarding to gain access to the rhymes that go along with the instrumentals in different parts of the game.

EZ2ON REBOOT : R

EZ2ON REBOOT : R

The good:

 • There are 230+ songs from all kinds of genres, one of the most varied song lists I’ve seen in a rhythm game. Also, we’re getting 4~ new songs each month for free.

 • I get over 500 fps on a slightly dated setup, making the gameplay smooth and input-lag free.

 • The difficulty distribution covers all skill levels, so both beginners and veterans can enjoy most of the content (except for the 8-keys mode, which only has 1 difficulty per song for now.)

 • The patterns are quite varied and complements the songs very well, there’s also modifiers to randomize the charts in multiple ways, so you can enjoy the same charts in different flavors

This review is aimed at newer rhythm game enthusiasts looking for another game to play and wondering if this game is for them.

What is EZ2ON ?

EZ2ON is a PC spinoff of the arcade series EZ2DJ (now called EZ2AC for legal reasons, more on that later) which is an hardcore (and I mean hardcore) rhythm game heavily inspired by beatmania. The series is considered extremely high quality by rhythm game standards and is beloved by a niche, almost exclusively Korean, really hardcore fanbase.

EZ2ON first released as a free to play game in 2008, shutdown then revived in 2013 with a new interface and some new songs, then shut down again as the free to play model wasn’t viable. The game was also exclusive to South Korea.

Of Bird and Cage

Of Bird and Cage

After waiting patiently for this game to release, I can firmly say the end product being so much more than I expected. The game plays on some very intense situations as you join Gitta on her downward spiral into addiction. You’re placed in scenarios where bad decisions can cost you your sanity and really throws out the question of how far are you willing to go for your next fix. One thing I absolutely loved about this game is that you can choose to not partake in Gitta’s vices, but will equally struggle with getting by. Indulging in her addiction will lead you down a broken path, but choosing to stay sober will give you a chance to experience the mind-numbing struggle of needing to take one more hit, but refusing to do so. That is really well done in this game.

Of Bird and Cage doesn’t really start until you approach the sound guy and ask to have your demo CD played.  It is this very CD that provides the non-stop musical engine that drives the rest of this two-hour experience divided across three multi-part Acts and a summary credit sequence and epilogue.  Once the music starts to play each and every scene in the game will unfold at the pace and length of each song, as displayed by the track progression meter at the bottom.  When the music stops, the level ends regardless of what you have or haven’t done.  You could simply stand there and do nothing for the duration of the song and the story will continue, albeit taking the failure path vs. a potentially different path if you were to accomplish the listed objectives.  A list of tasks and sometimes collectibles will tell you what needs done before the music stops.

This game’s best feature is the background sound. The game is simple, move around and get the words without getting nicked by one of the hazards.

Read about this on r/languagelearninng on reddit, really enjoying it so far :) Love the ability to upload your own vocab lists. The music is great, although I’d like to see the option to use your own at some point in the future. I teach English and this is something I think a lot of my students would enjoy instead of using regular flashcard apps. Great idea!

PowerBeatsVR - VR Fitness

PowerBeatsVR - VR Fitness

Updated Review:

I’ve had this game since April and I still play it 5 times a week.

Pros:

*It is one hell of a full body workout. You will be lunging, crouching, punching, reaching, dodging, and just all around moving

*It is fun, not quite as fun as beat saber, but it is significantly more fun than BoxVR

*The developers are out-freaking-standing. They are the most responsive devs I have ever seen. They try to find a way to accomodate every request they get if they can. Even if they can’t, they are super friendly about it.

I’m very much enjoying including PowerBeatsVR into my daily exercise routines. If I was able to incorporate my own favorite music it would quickly become my favorite VR software. For now Audio Beats holds that place, but this doesn’t detract from the lure of being able to smash large boulders with only my fist in PowerBeatsVR. With the future improvements mentioned, I think this will be something important to keep my interest in keeping fit.

I would not want to see the scoring system changed in any significant way. I’m used to this, I know I have to be perfect in order to get the higher scores. I wouldn’t like it if the game was “dumbed down” in order to make reaching the higher levels easier to accomplish. Reaching the number 1 spot is the goal, and it wouldn’t mean very much if I found out I reached this level because the game had been altered to make it easier to do so. I don’t think it should necessarily be made artificially any more difficult either, but certainly don’t make it easier.

Highly Likely

Highly Likely

This is one of the most tedious, poorly crafted, boring, pointless games I’ve ever played.

The art is phenomenal. The developers' interactions with folks on the internet is disappointing. It’s buggy and slow and repetitive.

There are no puzzles, there’s barely a story, there is no skill involved, it’s poorly translated, it’s a little sexist, and the characters' motivations are all over the map. There’s literally a segment in this game where you need to cross a river, so you hold the joystick to the left for over a minute while he slowly turns a crank. This happens multiple times. The most engaging moment of the whole thing is a long and laborious multi-part fetch quest.

Highly Likely is a short and light-hearted point-and-click game that is set in a rural Ukraine and follows a man named Mikola as he tries to get himself out of an enormous debt that he owes to the bank. He finds himself a new business opportunity, one that is risky and could land him in trouble with the law, but he knows that he’s got no other choice. This is the basic story premise that is very relatable and could happen to just about anyone.

Twilight Drive

Twilight Drive

If you like top-down racing games, please follow our curator page.

Twilight Drive is is unlucky most top-down driving games, at first you might be thinking this is absolute rubbish, but the moment you are playing it and trying it, it is something else. This one of the kind of games that are more about time-trialling, a race against time for the medals, and better times than your friends (if you have any that play it, unlike me). But first you realize, there is no accelerator key for it. At first, I was thinking it, this has to be a mobile game. It is more than that. The car automatically goes on it forwards, on cruise control. With each time you turn your car, and do bear in mind, the handling is kind of funky/heavy, it slows down your car. You want to avoid that. How, you may ask? Simple - Hooks.

Real player with 7.2 hrs in game

I would describe Twilight Drive as a top-down arcade time trial game. It has unique driving mechanics - encouraging you to ‘grapple’ round corners and actively avoid steering (which slows you down). The game leads you into these mechanics gently (and gradually adds more as you go through the generous number of levels), and I found it pretty easy to get started with. Quite often I could ‘pass’ a level with a bronze medal on my first try, but I soon realised how much nuance there is to perfecting each level - it takes a lot of retries to get better, sometimes trying to perfect the timing of slingshotting yourself round a corner with the hooks, other times trying to master drifting - inevitably leading to a lot of crashes! Rather than racing against opponents, you are racing to beat yourself, earn medals and beat your friends, with ‘ghost cars’ (which brought back fond memories of classic rally games). I find it surprisingly addictive, quite often going back for ‘one more go’ to get that next medal - and the level unlocking requirements sometimes encourage this replaying to get enough medals to unlock the next level. It has a great retro indie feel, with lovely chilled out electronic background music.
