Rocking Legend

Rocking Legend

It’s a bit wacky.

Old Review.

! but THERE SHOULDN’T BE LEADERBOARDS FOR CUSTOM SONGS!!!!

Now that there isn’t custom song leaderboards anymore, I can stop worrying about my scores. There’s still no calibration apparently?

Update #13 has added calibration which I’m really happy about, that’s a big plus. But now notes that transition to HOPOs within a unforced 16th or 32th note don’t appear as HOPOs anymore. Big example is playing songs like Egoless by Hekya. Hopefully this gets fixed in another update. This issue only occurred once when you had previously imported songs. Reimporting them is the fix (as said from the update post)

Functional. That’s the bare bones of it, it works as intended. Playing in the fingers with the Index controls works fine, though tracking sometimes goes astray which seems to get fixed by turning the controller off and on again. If you wanted something to exploit the finger tracking of those controls then Rocking Hero is 90% there with what it wants to do.

The ability to log in customs was super simple, the game auto loads in on boot whatever you’ve dropped in the custom folder.

Needs a ton of work on the main play screen though as of writing. A lack of atmosphere kind of kills it, along with your connection to the process. The game would and should be a lot more gratifying when your nailing it, something that maybe should have been a focus on before it launched as it’s kind of a standard with these games.

I’ve changed my review and recommendation. Updated and original reviews below.

[Updated review]

I switched from Not Recommended to Recommended after experimenting with different audio files in Free Play mode. With lossless audio sources and synthesized tracks, it is very possible to determine key strokes based on the beats of the music. This doesn’t work as well with audio files that are too compressed, or that were taken from a lossless source that hasn’t been remastered (e.g. a non-remastered CD of music from the 1980s). I still urge the dev(s) to add the highlighting option that I mentioned in the original review. Also, the Arena Mode still needs remappable keys and a better explanation of its mechanics. However, for US$9.99, this is worth a buy.

It has been quite some time since I have had that much fun in VR!

Great realisation and did I mention the fun?

PLEASE add support for midi files (.mid, .midi, .kar). This is a simple format, there is certainly a c++ library for it and the drum track is always track 10.

Tips:

If it crashes on Windows 10 + oculus, go to the launch file, right click the executable and select launch as Windows 7 in compatibility mode.

I put the drums a bit lower so I can use my arm hitting my leg to simulate a better sensation of hitting the drum

I love your gameee! been looking for this type of game since then!

suggestions :

i hope you can use the drum as a set in normal or easy modes rather than just 3 pcs( just to make the player center focused) rather than just looking on the left side

overlapping bars, the bars in front mostly covers the back so its kinda confusing!

I hope you guys can add known music like those in spotify in future updates

and some optimization!

overall THANK YOU!

Party Pumper

This was a very nice surprise!! Honestly, I did not expect it to be awesome :)

At first I wasnt sure and had this on my wishlist, even asked dumb question via discussions. This is much better than electronauts, here is actually a game and a good one. Im keen music producer and dj (only a hobby, just messing with Cubase/Reason11 etc) and found this game really addicting and well made. Samples are high quality and good variety. Even though only 2 locations, it never really sounds the same. Music creation and keeping crowd happy is very satisfying and we have battles with my 2nd half :)

Disclaimer: I’ve got the game via Steam curators program.

Party Pumper is creative DJ-themed rhythm and multitasking VR game. Core gameplay loop is already fun and addictive on the EA stage, now it just needs more content.

Pros:

  • Challenging tactile gameplay with responsive controls(with small exception for a few bugs)

  • Groovy visuals, very appropriate for the setting

  • Interesting implementation of rhythm game in VR, it’s nothing like Beat Saber for a change)

Cons:

  • It currently has only 2 levels

Phase Shift

Phase Shift

revision 2

I got into the Guitar Hero-esque (or whatever you want) hobby this year a few months ago. I started with FoFiX because I prefer open source software, but I quickly came to realize it was outdated when I tried Phase Shift. I have played Clone Hero on a friends computer, but haven’t installed it and tried it myself, just so you understand where I’m coming from.

The Good:

Tons of controllers! While it lacks vocals, which is a strange omission considering the more obscure controllers (atypical drums and dance pads), it supports more instruments than retail games! I don’t yet own a “Real Guitar” but I very curious how well it works in Phase Shift, and I would never had tried Keys at all had it not been supported.

While I recommend this to people who want to play drums on PC, I do not recommend it without a few caveats. I’d also like to say that I like this better than Rock Band because it allows a lot of customization, the charts are actually fully charted on drums (usually, just have to find the right one) and the latency is pretty much 0 (I have both my video and audio latency set to 0 and can hit everything. Anyways, the only downside to this right now is that in the free version, themes were allowed and were fully integrated into the game. However, with this version, themes are useable, but there are certain elements of the UI that are completely useless with a theme on, so If I want to edit my profile or do something else, I have to restart the game with the default theme applied. Not only that, the songs themselves become invisible when the selection bar is on them, making it impossible to see my score on each song. Another problem I’ve had is setting up my MIDI drums. I wanted to set up my drums via MIDI to play the “Real drums” mode, but for some reason, no matter what, my snare would not work in-game. It would work everywhere else and even be set to the right drum, but for some reason when going into a song, It did not register any hits. I tried very hard to mess with the midi numbers in my drum module, but nothing worked. Also, recently It’s had a tendency to crash or pause the game randomly. Not sure if this is a hardware issue or an issue with the game itself. Anyways, all in all, I definitely recommend this and it’s most definitely WAAAAYYYY better than Rock Band, but there are definitely a lot of kinks to work out.

First off, I absolutely adore this game so far! The sounds are very accurate on each part of the drum sets and that’s awesome.

I mostly spend my time in free play with the Metallica drum-set playing together with Spotify songs which I LOVE! I feel like you don’t get too many songs with the game but the ones that are there are well made.

Now onto some pros and cons:

Pros:

+Good Hit Sensitivity

+Very Accurate Sound

+Well Made “Starter Songs”

+Addicting (In A Good Way ;) )

Cons:

-Custom songs sometimes lags and goes out of sync with the drum pattern you are supposed to play

Real player with 15.8 hrs in game

For a $10 VR game, this isn’t that bad! As a rhythm game, this is insanely fun, but if you’re looking for a game or an experience where you go behind a drum kit and can play whatever you want (like free drumming) don’t bother. This is a great game ONLY if you deal with the rhythm game aspect of it.

However, focusing on the rhythm game aspect is very weak. The fan base is lacking, so that means a lack of user generated content. Trust me, there’s one review here that just says “dead game” and they’re not exactly wrong, at least in terms of fan support. Customs are a blessing for this game, it allows for more content out of this game and it’s even supported by the devs right out of the gate (Although the notes they give you are very limited and actually wrong with the cymbal placement). It’s very hard to recommend this game purely because of the lack of user generated content, but as someone who can chart rhythm games and put songs into the game (and trust me, with how fun this game is, I will) I can get behind it.

Check out the video I made for this game, contains my experience pretty much:

Let me start this review with one thing.

It’s so nice to see a priced game in the newly released section of steam that doesn’t make me frustrated after playing it. The title screen isn’t very visually appealing and the main character gives me a chuckle with how silly he looks, but then you get to the actual gameplay and it’s there where you realize this game has a lot of potential. This is a game that, as far as I can tell, was made by one guy, probably utilizing a game creating engine of sorts but that’s besides the point.

NOISETUBE

NOISETUBE

NOISETUBE is a virtual reality & music visual experience. Feed it a song, space out, and be whisked away into a unique geometric journey.

Maybe you’ve encountered this feeling in real life: driving down the highway, or riding a bike, and the song you’re listening to just somehow feels perfectly in sync. NOISETUBE aims to capture this emotion of barrelling through space at just the right speed based on the intensity of the song.

NOISETUBE is powered by feeding it a music file from your computer and it generates an ever expanding tunnel for you to be shot through in space.

Obviously not as responsive as a real instrument, but this is a good start. Sometimes it’s hard to make a sound without being very careful about hitting the bar, which can be annoying. Another thing that would bring this from kind of useful to extremely useful is the ability to import sheet music from a PDF to be able to read it in-game while playing.
