A Brilliant Game About The Beauty Of Music, Cooperation, And Friendship

(LIGHT SPOILERS)

Well I certainly didn’t expect this game to evoke that much emotion from me! I wasn’t even aware I owned this title, and will try and figure out exactly how it managed to fall into my lap. In this game, you play as The Bard, a lovable, positive, and sometimes naive little guy, who happens to figure out that the world is in danger and that it needs a hero. The game tricks any unaware players into thinking it is a generic adventure game following the typical “hero’s quest” such as in games like The Legend Of Zelda , but it ends up being so much more than that. Music is central to this game’s mechanics, and all interactions essentially involve some form of music, but it all involves a flick of the right stick in one of eight different directions. Throw in some puzzles, light platforming, and even some battles here and there, and you have a unique game full of charm, dedication, and something that many games lack nowadays - soul. There is so much that can be said about this game that is positive, that I figured we get the few “negatives” out of the way (more like neutral points if we’re being honest here).

The first review I’m ever writing on Steam. Mild spoiler warnings but nothing too telling.

This game was a phenomenon - I highly recommend it to both my friends who may see this review and the general consensus.

The game follows a (briefly) un-named Bard, who loves to sing. Turns out that whilst a lot of people are against this lifestyle of singing your way to victory, it pulls him a long way through a very colourful and deep journey to save the world - because he wants to, not because he was chosen to.

Get it on sale.

It will be 2 pm. You are ready to do your stand up. And then be called every racist slur in the book. You will try for what seems like days to perfect your approach; and fail. You will hear people read some lines off the web, and they will get burnt. You will take part in burning them off stage.

It will be 10 pm on a thursday and hear some chick crying about how she just cain’t become a thot and she will try to get you to go to her host. You will see her kicked and every one will rejoice. You will most likely show up in the wrong room and hear conversations that are insane.

Fantastic game.

It’s got a decent set of features and types of performace options which is appreciable

but at the meat of it (ground beef of it: this game is only as good as it’s playerbase.

There are plenty of funny people on here that naturally gravitate towards what this game is all about (roleplaying, having fun, laughs) but they have to be dug up through the racist trolls and children that you can expect to find on a game priced at $4. I’m thankful there are ways to quality control your rooms via kicks and vote offs, but the options are very limited in handling your club.

El Tango de la Muerte

El Tango de la Muerte

El Tango de la Muerte:

It takes two to tango, isn’t what they say! What if someone wants to tango but has two left feet? The image in my mind is that a person would have his upper body leaning toward the right in order to compensate for his/her unfortunate tendency to deviate to their left side. Joking aside, what would you do if your childhood sweetheart was a great Tango dancer, and you discovered that you actually had not two, but three left feet? You’d probably ask someone to help you out, right? That is exactly what Luciano did. He asked his best friend Julio to teach him how to find the secret of his right foot. Otherwise, it would truly become El Tango de la Muerte!

--- A fresh and highly unique spin on the rhythm genre. You're basically trying to follow the pattern as it appears on the floor with various flourishes that you can hit for added effect. While this sounds simple, picking up on the rhythm can be tough and you'll feel exactly as awkward as someone dancing poorly would in real life, but when you finally get the beat down and hit that string of notes just right, it feels _amazing_ The theme and story are also very fun. I can honestly say I've never played a game about Argentenian ballroom dancing before. The storyline is like a soap opera gangster story and it's surprisingly well-written with some memorable characters and fun over-the-top melodrama. *– [Real player with 2.6 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197997934524)* --- ![Brutal Legend](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/225260/header.jpg "") ## Brutal Legend **My rating:** 7+/10 Based on: one 100% complete SP campaign on Brütal difficulty + MP boosting with a partner and solo grinding [Check out my other reviews](steamcommunity.com/id/CamAddLess/recommended/) **TL;DR:** An homage to heavy metal and a peculiar, if mediocre blend of a 3rd person hack-and-slash with a sandbox world and RTS-lite mechanics. Excelling in art direction and soundtrack, but bogged down by the gameplay design choices and console controls, it can make you hum, finger drum and fist pump in a mosh-pit-like excitement or bang your head in gloomy frustration. Fun enough to play on your own, but the MP is pretty much dead without friends. Brutal, perhaps, metal, definitely, but not enough to rock my world. *– [Real player with 48.2 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197991638297)* Brütal Legend, a game about Jack Black being Jack Black in a fantasy world full of metal. Metal as in, the musical genre, and the element as well (since there are many metal-based things on this world!). Now, for a more serious introduction, Brütal Legend is an action-adventure game (of the hack and slash variety) mixed in with some slight RTS elements. While at first it might seem like an odd combination, actually makes a pretty entertaining game. The story follows Eddie Riggs, a roadie for a metal band who, after a terrible accident, gets transported to a fantasy world inspired by heavy metal, with fantastic creatures, and an evil overlord attempting to dominate it. Along the way, Eddie discovers not only that he gets awesome powers through music, but meets up with many interesting characters, some of them based on real-life heavy metal legends (and even voiced by them). Even though I wouldn't call metal one of my favourite genres, this game certainly manages to create an amazing world from it (and it actually made me enjoy metal a lot more!). Anyway, the main goal is to put a stop to Lord Doviculus' plans, who wishes to enslave humanity and dominate the world. *– [Real player with 47.5 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198025674597)* --- ![Music Band Manager](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/730410/header.jpg "") ## Music Band Manager ### Verdict: 3/10 Becoming a mix of band manager and music band becomes in reality a click feast that tests your patience and resilience in a very simple simulation environment. Better look somewhere else or buy with a huge discount. ### PrivateJoh’s personal (re)view: Personally, I feel _Music Band Manager_ is lacking in many aspects. Gender possibilities are not really explored. 2D graphics are generic at most, and not particularly engaging. Initially, the humor might bring a smile to your face, but it becomes old really fast. *– [Real player with 23.7 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198026722388)* Wanted More So i bought this game when it was on offer at £2.69 (or there about) and to be honest it is only worth this much! What i wanted was in band augments, broken instruments, band members leaving, sex, drugs and rock’n’roll!! What i got is a very tame game in so far as no one falls out with anyone no one gets tired EVER!!! There is no time management in fact you can have you “band” work every day of every week of the year and they never drop from fatigue (i would recommend that you DO work them every day), on top of this you can get them to rehearsal and write songs (as they say no rest for the wicked). *– [Real player with 18.6 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197979422293)* --- ![Frederic: Evil Strikes Back](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/301200/header.jpg "") ## Frederic: Evil Strikes Back CONS: - Impossibru achievement. - Bindable keys are very limited (cannot bind numbers, colon, spacebar, etc..) - Lack of option settings. - Music is lengthier and has more depth in terms of variety of instruments and stuff but still melodies are not catchy enough compared to the previous game (pretty much they are all remixes of pop songs and one or two pieces of classical music.) - Excessive parodies, some stereotypical jokes, and pop culture/internet memes are hardly funny. - Game now depicts Chopin as a more idiotic and one-dimensional character (actually all characters are like that in this game.) *– [Real player with 8.7 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197963040896)* An interesting game, quite enjoyable. I recommend getting both in the bundle, don't bother with this game alone considering the similar price. The gameplay is good, with a few new note types in this game. However, the entire style of the game shifted awkwardly. Visually it seems better, but Chopin is less charming and less developed as a character. He's no longer a stranger in a new world, but more of a 80's popstar working to save himself. More of the jokes go from awkwardly hilarious to groaningly memetic. Meanwhile, the voiceovers that could've started their own memes are notably toned down. It's harder to tell that there are only a few voice actors in this version, but it's less charming and natural. *– [Real player with 8.3 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198001494272)* --- ![Frederic: Resurrection of Music](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/301190/header.jpg "") ## Frederic: Resurrection of Music I love this game. I keep coming back to it, because it has great gameplay. STEEP learning curve: the game expects you to master nine keyboard keys AND remember the rhythm of each song. But once you get it, the game is great fun. Solid cutscene animation and funny characters keeps the gameplay from getting dry. Works really well on ubuntu linux desktop versions. Also, be aware that there is a "Directors Version" on steam, sold separately, which seems to have additional features. I think it has some additional levels and multiplayer, but reviews say that the gameplay may not be as responsive. I decided on getting this version, and I would recommend others to do the same. *– [Real player with 17.9 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198418549470)* With over 230 compositions under his belt, Frederic Chopin was one of the world's leading musicians in the 1800's. He's been referenced and even starred in multiple video games in the past, and Resurrection of Music is the latest in that trend. It's probably the best fit, being a rhythm game full of imagination and heart. This is an easy recommendation to anyone who enjoys music. In Frederic: RoM you play as Chopin himself, recently raised from the dead, and musically battle other musicians across the globe. Armed with nothing but a magical piano, it is up to you to show that you are still relevant in an age of Auto Tuners, Synthesizers, and Pro Tools. *– [Real player with 10.4 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197978015863)* --- ![Rock-N-Rogue: A Boo Bunny Plague Adventure](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/439530/header.jpg "") ## Rock-N-Rogue: A Boo Bunny Plague Adventure if you haven't played the original Boo Bunny Plague, stop what you are doing and go buy that first. You'll know the story and you'll get to love the characters, and you'll see the huge growth from this indie company. There are of course some kinks but that'll be fixed in the first couple of weeks after release, once the devs finish whipping their QA's unmercilessly. This game is so much like the original Boo Bunny Plague because it has the same heart, the characters you love, the music, and the humor…BUT they made it ten times more playable! They listened to the complaints they got from Boo Bunny Plague and made this glorious gem! I like that you can play the different characters! That was my big complaint from the first one. I especially like Faye's special little demon she summons to help her out . The music is awesome, of course. HELLO MC CHRIS!? . *– [Real player with 16.8 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198070803037)* I am writing this review in the hopes that the creators of Boo Bunny Plague will see it and improve this game or move on and make a true sequel to the original game. I am also writing this review right after playing through the first level and second level as Bunny. Pros: - nice customization. -Improved Graphics -Nostalgic dungeon crawler beat em up type gameplay - An other story with the lovable characters Cons and Stuff to fix: There is quite a lot wrong with this game that brings it down from being good to decent to bad and maybe even awful. *– [Real player with 6.0 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198094226278)* --- ![Boo Bunny Plague](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/313590/header.jpg "") ## Boo Bunny Plague This game is ok. But there are more cons than pros. Pros: - This game has great humor. And this is the reason why is stuck with the game the whole way through. - This game also has great voice acting and each character has their own unique personalities that i really like. - The game also has decent graphics. they aren't bad, but they arent great. Also the characters are nicely detailed. Cons: - This game has terrible gameplay. You can only do a 3 combo attack and an air attack. If Gunny is around, you can hit him with your guitar and he will explode to bullets. To bad he dissapears every 30 seconds. *– [Real player with 20.9 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198104023348)* The tl;dr version: Probably worth a look at $5.00, unquestionably worth it at $1.00, and the soundtrack is probably the best part of the game, so buy it. Finished the game on Normal, haven't tried Impossible yet. Not doing a formal pro/con thing. I bought the game and soundtrack on yet another ridiculous Steam markdown. I think it was $1.49 for the combo. Ok, so, the best way I can sum up my review is this: if you have no speakers or headphones, or if this game lacked all audio, it might *barely* be worth a dollar. The graphics are fun, but pretty basic; if you're expecting AAA level characters, backgrounds, and animations, then you really gotta re-evaluate your expectations. The enemy variety is nearly nil, as you're mainly dealing with a handful of Vikings, and a bunch of bosses. The fighting system is meh. Blocking seemed to be unnecessary for most of the game (except for boss fights, which is actually most of the fights). You have a guitar-sword (a selection of them, really), and you can jump. But jump-strikes don't seem to do anything special. No distance weapons, either. You also get your "friend," Gunny, who will jump in and shoot on occasion. Gunny's kinda cool. Like a weaponized version of Pintsize from the online comic Questionable Content (though it's possible I'm the only one who sees a similarity). *– [Real player with 19.5 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198043780977)* --- ![Freedom Finger](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1005410/header.jpg "") ## Freedom Finger The silly and offensive art style is what drew me to this game, not the musicians or voice actors. Despite its cartoony look Freedom Finger is a proper shmup. You have a ship and you shoot enemies with plenty of bullets, enemies and walls to be dodged. The game has two unique game mechanics for a shmup namely grabbing and punching. It's a bit unusual but it is quite fun. It allows for a lot of different ways to play a level. Fortunately there's no shop with upgrades for your ship, you can follow the story but also just hop into any level and start competing for the leaderboard. If you want an upgrade go grab an enemy ship! *– [Real player with 38.0 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198105059120)* Check out my first impressions gameplay video for Freedom Finger here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD1OPbuRzCk ``` [url]For more game reviews and recommendations make sure to follow my Steam Curator page here[/url] ``` -QUICK FIRE REVIEW (If you don’t have time to watch the gameplay video) -Story: Save the American Lunar base from the Chinese who have taken over! -Graphics: Very cartoonish. Kinda of reminds me of the adult cartoons you'd see on Adult Swim. *– [Real player with 11.0 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198042198830)* ---
