Melody’s Escape

Melody’s Escape

Melody’s Escape is a deceptively simple yet challenging obstacle-based rhythm game with a lot of potential versatility in playstyle. While still in Early Access, it has almost no technical errors and the developer is extremely active, so I would recommend it to people who enjoy rhythm games, especially people who are looking for a different type of procedurally-generated music gameplay. I am terrible at obstacle running games, but I have never ever found the platforming element of this game to be obtrusive or overwhelming because it integrates so well with the beat and feels so smooth on a sensory level.

Summary

Melody’s Escape best represents rhythm synthesizer that generates various movement keys depending on the theme and digital nature of your favorite songs. The environment is always altered between each song you choose so everything is fairly different and randomized. As such since this is a rhythm game, a lot of gameplay is created based on the music’s movement. Some parts of a song can jump from being very fast paced to having a sudden drop in movement.

Maybe you are familiar with games like Audiosurf or Melody’s Escape. This is one of the games of that game genre. Don’t expect much from it at the moment, but it sure looks promising. The fact there is only 1 person working on this entire game, is mindblowing to me.

You control an airship with mouse and hover over the notes, while pressing the coresponding key each time. I like the gameplay, and the colorful graphics. The in-game gameplay is jittery, but it’s no issue for me. The game might have problems with placing notes when there is a lot of going on in the song. I get that, many games of this genre have that issue, if not all (It is actually impossible to create the perfect music analyzer that would work with any type of music).

I’ve changed my review and recommendation. Updated and original reviews below.

[Updated review]

I switched from Not Recommended to Recommended after experimenting with different audio files in Free Play mode. With lossless audio sources and synthesized tracks, it is very possible to determine key strokes based on the beats of the music. This doesn’t work as well with audio files that are too compressed, or that were taken from a lossless source that hasn’t been remastered (e.g. a non-remastered CD of music from the 1980s). I still urge the dev(s) to add the highlighting option that I mentioned in the original review. Also, the Arena Mode still needs remappable keys and a better explanation of its mechanics. However, for US$9.99, this is worth a buy.

So you have :

-Pretty much any music you want

-Actually good aim training (you can tweak pretty much everything to your liking)

-Public tournaments (Player, Mapper and Streamer) with actual prizes (Think first place is usually 30$ atm)

-High customization available, from maps to backgrounds and game modes (ye you can even move within the map or give heads to bots to practice your HSR hmm

-A user friendly interface that improves with every (frequent) update

-Insane community which actually has insane music tastes

This game, even in early access, is really great! Extremely relaxing, while still having a bit of difficulty to it. The art style is perfect for the vibe and I can’t wait to more functionality/modes/difficulties/(maybe keyboard controls)/whatever else to get added. Much needed change of pace when I’m stressed. Highly recommend!

I like the aesthetic and visuals. But unfortunately cant really play the game being a slow typer (Which i wanted to improve with this game) and there being no difficult settings.

This game has good core components. No songs to try on launch and in turn no “high scores” to care about. The game doesn’t do a good job of letting you know when you’ve hit for missing a note (think of guitar hero). The algorithm used to analyze the audio is fine, but some of them don’t make sense, and without a tracklist that has a curated ‘track’ that fits perfectly to the beat, just makes it feel a little less.

I like the core idea of the game as a very fast typer, but sometimes the letters are just random. Maybe converting them to words (as touch typing is really what people are doing) would make it easier to follow. That or moving away from the learning to type idea, and just sticking with home row or something for every letter.

Your Music Puzzle

Your Music Puzzle

Quite a niche genre in Steam to be seen.

An idea for deconstructing songs into pieces to reassemble them again was never so interesting, so I decided to give it a try.

The game is replayable as long as you have songs to make puzzles from and your motivation.

Completing songs takes a lot of time, I have spent nearly a half an hour to match all the pieces of a song together into a long chain of music.

I noticed that long chains of pieces sometimes do not want to join to other chains, but it occurs very rarely.

Grabbed this Game the day it came out, and it certainly did NOT disappoint! You can take the songs already a part of the game, or bring in your own music…and see how well you REALLY know the songs you have as favorites…displaced into several puzzle pieces, and it tests how well you indeed know them…which verses come first, etc, to see how challenging it will end up being…but REALLY well done!! The pieces really DO fit together, and parts that repeat or sound similar within a chosen song, is where you’ll really be tested. Never unfair, the challenge does depend on which song you select, but deals more with you than this game, as the game is really done that well. With the possible exception of not being able to save your work once its finished, this game is otherwise masterfully done, VERY cool, good fun OR good time waster, depending on how you see it, but time well spent in any case. ‘Your Music Puzzle’ exceeded my expectations, and my expectations were high. Worthy in every way!

Audiosurf 2

Audiosurf 2

For people coming from Audiosurf 1: You might like it or you might not. It depends on your playstyle.

For people who have big music libraries who want a new game to mess around with: Get this.

2018 update: Since streaming has been removed, I’m updating the review to reflect that. Also, apparently the demo doesn’t work, so I won’t mention that either.

Although the game follows mostly the same mechanics as the first Audiosurf (ride on a rollercoaster based on your favorite songs, gathering points and beating other people’s scores), there are plenty of things that set it apart. The biggest addition is the workshop, which gives you more than enough options to try out different skins and modes, and lets you find the best ways to play your songs.

I wish there were a Neutral option for reviews, but anyway - I ONLY recommend this game if you have a pretty decent song library in your computer. Why? Lemme explain:

YouTube Fiasco

This game used Soundcloud to stream songs for us to play back in the day until October~November 2016, but, after Soundcloud ceased any applications from using its services, the developer, Dylan, had a few weeks to think about what he was going to do with this game… and honestly, he’s lucky his game is great as it is because Audiosurf 2 was almost unplayable for one week or so as a result of it.

Happy Oshare Time

This game is dangerously kawaii. It’s like I’m inside of a denpa album. If you like stuff like PriPara this might be for you. However there isn’t much to the game with only 12 songs and not a very strong rhythm game. Get it on sale.

It’s honestly a very cute game. It’s got a surprising variety of songs and customization. They added new outfits for Halloween, so I hope they keep updating it for different holidays!

Had some issues with crashes earlier on, but those seem to have cleared up. The hands are a bit wonky, but it’s not a big deal. And yes, there’s no teleportation so if you don’t have a big room, you can’t really get close to the mirror. But it doesn’t affect the experience much.

If this seems like your thing, then it’s probably worth your money. There’s nothing really hidden about Happy Oshare Time. The description sums it up well. I find it quite entertaining in short sessions and I know I’ll keep coming back to play more!
