STAR WARS™: Squadrons

STAR WARS™: Squadrons

Star Wars: Squadrons is a superb multiplayer simcade space simulator with a steep learning curve and in-depth movement mechanics. The game is easy to learn, and moderately difficult to master. To be successful and get full enjoyment out of Squadrons, you must learn proper movement techniques such as boost gasping, dead drifting, and 0 throttle boosting. Squadrons is best when playing with others, and there are a lot of communities to choose from. TFA, TRA, NRN, Gray Squadron, Emperor’s Hammer, and others will help you learn how to fly and have many opportunities to fly with other pilots. The playerbase is slowly dwindling, meaning that a lot of the remaining active players are decently skilled at the game. You will be crushed and beaten badly if you come up against players who are much more skilled than you, which is why learning advanced movement techniques is so important. The game isn’t for everyone, and if you aren’t willing to put in a lot of hours learning these techniques, I can’t recommend the game.

The game looks great, no, beautiful. All models are true to Star Wars lore and very detailed. Sound effects are on point, and they’ve managed to add some non-canon game elements (because it’s meant to be fun, after all) without those elements being lore- or immersion breaking.

I haven’t played the multiplayer for a while now, so I can’t say if that’s still active, but it was great fun during the game’s peak.

The only thing that slightly annoyed me were the very forced diversity/social justice points in the single player story line. They felt absolutely shoehorned in, which is a shame because the single player campaign is otherwise a very well structured and typical Star Wars story.

Heliborne Collection

Heliborne Collection

This is a shortened version of a longer review I wrote of the game - Steam didn’t have enough room for all of the gushing praise I have for Heliborne. This was written in August of 2018, but I’ve adjusted it to account for recent updates.

Heliborne is a helicopter action game similar to World of Tanks or World of Warplanes, but with no real micro-transactions (skins can be purchased, both with real money and experience points, but they are purely cosmetic). Players are introduced to a series of NATO (primarily American) and Russian helicopters, beginning with piston-driven craft that handle like flying barges armed with simple machine guns to sleek modern attack choppers with guided missiles. Each chopper handles differently and mastering their unique characteristics is a lot of fun. The flight model is definitely more arcade than sim, but each bird has real heft and momentum in flight. Getting from point A to point B (or, should I say, LZ 1 to LZ 2?) isn’t terribly difficult, but doing it with style? Coming into a hot LZ at speed to drop troops under heavy fire? That takes a little bit of practice. A basic understanding of the physics Grand Theft Auto was able to figure it out fairly quickly.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition

I got into flight simulation when I got FSX Standard for my birthday in 2009, and so far it has been my campanion since. Fast forward to 2017, my PC has a major crash that wipes my main drive, which my FSX was on. Kinda happy this happened, as I wanted to upgrade to FSX: Steam for a while, and after New Year’s I finally bought it and wow what a difference!

FSX is a great simulator to get into the hobby, ESPECIALLY FSX: Steam Edition. While on Amazon FSX: Gold Edition copies are running at $200 to $400, FSX: Steam Edition is only $24, and about $14 if you buy the boxed version from Amazon. That is a heck of a deal for a great flight sim that offers the whole world, +24,000 airports, 27 different aircraft, including G1000 Cessna 172, Beech Baron, and Mooney Bravo, new and easy Steam Multiplayer, fun different multiplayer modes, a whole variety of different missions, virtual flight lessons with Rod Machado, and a huge learning center where you can learn about different topics and can help you with FSX.

This simulator is certainly a trip down memory lane for me. Before I had FSX:SE or just FSX Gold Edition, I flew on Flight Simulator 2004 which was my first experience being at the controls of a virtual aircraft. Of course, I was only five or six years old and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, but it really helped ignite my passion for flying. Now, this simulator may be obsolete compared to others like X-Plane 11 and FS 2020 just around the corner, but I’ll always come back to this one for old time’s sake (and because of the communities on multiplayer).

I’ve been looking for a realistic ATC simulator for years. Although not perfect, this delivers the closest experience than any other games. The voice recognition is still a little buggy, and I’m assuming newer sp’s will fix the performance speed (occasionally, I’ll notice a little jerkiness in moving objects). I added on a realcolor program (not available on steam) to get the “real-life” airlines for each airport as well as the coloring of the planes match the current airlines paint schemes. I reccomend the real-traffic add-in as well (also not available on steam–darn).

I love this game, personally. It has a high learning curve, but you’ll pick it up quickly if your passion for aviation or ATC (Air Traffic Controlling) is strong enough.

I’m neither a pilot or real ATC, just an enthusiast who spends hours watching aviation channels, and gaming channels that focused on this game. I truly wanted it, If you’ve watched videos on this topic, if you watch people play 30 minutes or an hour at a certain airport on youtube and wanted more? This game may be for you.

I say may because there are too many issues with game itself. EVEN IF you hit all the benchmarks above I still want you to be weary of this purchase.

This is so infuriating. Sick of being deducted 500 points for planes alerts when they take off and land on separate runways. Can never get into positive points tally. That fed up feel like deleting it from my system.

I do enjoy playing the game. But, Why would a game be made that can’t be saved ? if the player has to leave the game. not much you can do, but leave your computer on with game paused. or lose all the time spent playing to start all over again later if you quit the game. this is my main disappointment with Tower 3 D non Pro. Sure glad I didn’t purchase the Tower 3D pro version then find out no save option. I sure hope the developers can do an update and put a save option on the Tower 3 D games.

You won’t learn how to pilot a fighter plane, but there is certainly fun to be had with this game. With varying difficulties mainly changing the realism of the game, you can go from a simple simulator to an arcade shoot em up depending on what you fancy. I went for the latter and had a great time blasting Germans out of the sky. The campaign in this game is worth the money alone, and that is a really good thing because multiplayer is as dead as a door knob. The graphics were not top of the line, but that is fine for a low end PC. It was still good enough to shoot some planes out of the sky, and the frame rate was impressive. I experienced tearing once during the campaign and that was probably do to background processes. I do wish the voice actors had a little more variety, but the narrating was fine. The sounds of the plane responded to the input of the controls. The shots were pretty addicting, if the gun did not over heat you could hold down the fire button and enjoy the endless bap-bap-bap. My only issue with this game is you. Why are you not playing multiplayer with me? If you don’t have one of the newer flight simulators yet, I would definitely recommend this one to try out.

I am confirming that my Logitech F310 Gamepad combined with good old Windows 7, works perfectly with Combat Wings: Battle of Britain.

Surprisingly the manual and the game description does not mentions it’s compatibility, and total customization.

Simply access the menu settings and configure the controller to your preferences.

It is important to note that the ground mission in which you are operating an AA gun mounted on a turret, that you must put all controls (gamepad) back to “default” positions.

I wish steam had a third recommendation option: “Kinda, but…”

This game, and it’s very much a game, is awesome. I’ve had over a thousand (and likely to grow) hours of fun, with some frustrations in-between. Thing is, at its core, DCS is a giant steaming piece of garbage. Nearly everything with the exception of the aircraft themselves is some flavour of “unfinished,” “half-baked,” and “broken.”

A note on the pricing: I’ve spend more money on DCS than on any other game. Though not as much as it might seem, if you do it smart you can get all important modules for 250 dollars. And it isn’t like you’ll be buying modules more than one at a time, you can get literally hundreds, even thousands of hours of gameplay from just one. I recommend you always buy on sales and choose your modules wisely. Do not buy flaming cliffs, or any of the flaming cliff aircraft, those are extremely outdated and “simplified” (though as you would quickly learn, the shortcut “shift+rctr+home” is much harder to remember than the location of the switch labelled “right engine start”, so “simplified” might not be the best word to use here).

This game is fantastic, and I’m talking about the 100% free Su-25t simulator you get by downloading this program right here, DCS, for FREE.

The Su-25t isn’t just one plane to fly in a game like War Thunder, it’s a complete old-school single player simulator. You get ten or so training missions covering every important function of the aircraft.

You get another ten or so individual mission scenarios, + again that number of quick missions and on top of all this you get a full campaign.

Along with that full campaign you can also find additional campaigns online, really high quality player made campaigns.

This game is quite fun and it gives a ‘‘unique’’ experience because it is somethink different , BUT first of all this game is in BETA which means not finished . Its worth checking out especially with friends .

The game feels like it’s barely half way through development. Its lacking features and replayability. Lots of things need improvement. That being said there is so much potential for it to grow and drastically improve over time, so its a thumbs up from me! Will be checking in again.

So many negative reviews,

(and with no comments available)

So yes I would give the game a 8/10 for great ww2 combat sim , but 5 out of 10 for ease of setup, because it used an older controller api that can cause problems with setup. (but fixes are relatively easy)

What follows in is mainly to deal with all the negative reviews from some steam users.

From reviews you can see a lot of ppl have problems, but generally more ppl will write to complain than complement if they get upset.

Most issues are due to following:

WW2 buffs that love aviation and love to fly these marvelous birds will love this game!

It’s time had already come as a premiere flight sim and now with the new DLC Desert Wings, you should really consider Il-2 Clifss of Dover Blitz/Desert Wings as a great value.

Don’t look at the past, it’s here and now and all about the future! I am tired of the comments referring to the original launch of the game which has zero to do with the current status of the game - just stop please - disregard them. Can some things be improved - sure. Is that true of “all” the flight sim games out there - “absolutely”. If you read between the lines they are usually complaining about the price, so let’s briefly discuss.

Jetpack Vacation currently has a main hub area that you can explore and collect coins from, it has a soccer-themed (Rocket League inspired) multiplayer only game, a target practice mini-game, and an experimental WIP obstacle course racing mini-game (Fall Guys inspired). The problem currently with Jetpack Vacation is that it lacks a playerbase and it needs more content as well.

However, I did have fun playing the Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout inspired mini-game. It was fun to play solo, but i can only imagine it would be a lot more fun racing against other players online. I really think this is where Jetpack Vacation could have a killer app mini-game to bring in more players if they focused on this WIP. Why they released the game without this mini-game being fully fleshed out is puzzling to me, as it is the best mini-game currently.
