Nurbits

Nurbits

This game is weird, and that is awesome.

The concept of ‘puzzle’ in this game is the one of ‘optimization,’ because if you stitch here and there not really knowing what you are doing you can easily beat the first few levels of the game, but it becomes clear that you have to be more precise and intuitive if you want to get those three star ratings and finish the game! I definitely recommend this to people who are more used to puzzle games, but if you are looking for the most difficult of challenges, this may not be you…

Minesweeper Classy

Minesweeper Classy

As far as I’m concerned, this is the best version of minesweeper on steam. This version feels smooth, has interesting levels, and keeps track of your win rates and best times. The hint system is useful in removing some risk of random guessing from your runs. These are all good additions. I do however have some gripes that are potential deal-breakers. The game allows you to unlock different color schemes, but none of them have anything close to a night-mode style. Every single color scheme has white tiles, which means lots of flash-bangs. Unfortunately, the free minesweeper browser version gives this a good run for it’s money. The browser version also has color coded numbers for easier pattern recognition. I wish this was an option as well. Once you get used to playing with colored numbers, it takes you a minute to think about certain moves when you play without. This version is well worth the money, because minesweeper is difficult to get wrong, but I do with it had a few more options for customizing the appearance of the game. Either way, if you enjoy playing minesweeper, this is well worth your time.

Against the Gradient

Against the Gradient

This game annoys me. It covers only four real transporters, and the rest are “nanobots” (so they can transport chemicals in both directions). And these two-way transporters work ONLY from higher to lower concentrations, rather than evening the concentrations in an only statistical sense, like in real cells. In that sense, I’d consider it “educational” only in the barest sense, and it’s not super-fun as a game either – but it could be. The only reason I’m voting “yes” is that with so few reviews a negative one would be devastating, and I’d like to see this improved upon. Surely a more complicated (and more realistic) cell-management game could be a lot of fun AND very educational.

Interesting way of apllying learning to a game. The idea is reatively simiple and straight forward, get the germs from point A to point B. Of course luck will play a hug part in this game. Either way it is still woth the time for younger children as they can learn a thing or two while playing so for that reason I recommend the game!

Soundodger+

Soundodger+

The sequel to the semi-popular flash game Soundodger on Adult Swim Games, Soundodger+ offers much more in terms of difficulty and replayability.

If you haven’t already, check out the original on Adult Swim, here (it has half of the levels, and the same gameplay): http://games.adultswim.com/soundodger-puzzle-online-game.html

Though it may be easy to jump right to the level editor or auto-gen mode, Soundodger+ is mostly about its single-player experience. There are many edge-of-your-seat moments where focus and concentration are key. This may not be apparent from the first few levels or trailer; the game starts off slow, easing you into the later levels with simplified versions of the patterns; it feels a little too slow moving in, and you need to beat ~10 of these levels before the advanced levels can be played. This is my only real gripe though; the level of polish and love put into the later levels is evident in spades. (Look for advanced levels indicated by a black background.)

Soundodger+ is a rhythm-bullet hell game in which bullets spawn from enemies on the outside of a rotating circle in time with the music. You must dodge them on the inside of the circle. The main game includes 20 basic levels, 18 advanced levels, and 5 heart levels. Each of the advanced levels is an upgraded version of one of the basic levels with harder bullet patterns. Levels are unlocked in sequence by getting enough score on all the previous levels. Each advanced level also contains a heart bullet, which if collected acts as a free hit. Heart levels are unlocked by finishing the required number of advanced levels with your heart intact, and consist of two upgraded basic songs and three all-new songs. The game also comes with 12 DLC levels for free, which do not contribute to the main game. Finally, the game includes a level editor and auto-generation feature so that you can play levels from your own songs.

Toaster Jam

Toaster Jam

While still somewhat limited in play time (developer has stated they will add new levels and game modes) this is a fun and relaxing casual game. It can be quite challenging at times, though not to the point of pure frustration (sorry if that’s what you are looking for).

Controls are simple (mouse only).

Graphics are nice (cartoonish, but the game isn’t going for hyper realism. I hope)

Level editor gives you options for new community made levels or to create levels to torture yourself

I picked this up as a meme game to speedrun, and was very surprised by how much fun I was having.

The main levels are VERY short. I finished the base 40 levels with all the toasts in around 20 minutes the first time. The endless mode seems fun, but I haven’t spent a lot of time one it.

I don’t actually know how much I would recommend this as a casual game, but if you like speedrunning, or IL grinding, or any kind of game where the point is to replay levels until you’re very good at them (think Action Henk, N++, Dustforce, etc), then I think this is well worth the price.

NUMTATE

NUMTATE

december 2021 edit: the 2.0 update revamped the whole game, so I edited the review to reflect the changes.

numtate is a portmanteau of number and rotate, and sure enough, it’s about rotating numbers so they add up to the one in the middle, called a core. luckily, not much math skill is required, as the core keeps track of the current situation, no need to constantly count what’s around. the core number is the minimum, not the exact goal, though most of the time you won’t have the luxury of going over.

Really fun strategy game with an environmental twist. This premise has you doubting between going all-in for the win and playing more conservatively to preserve the environment. I played beta for the past two years and the final version is even more polished! Server issues on launch day aside, great game and I certainly recommend it.

Extra fun when playing with friends, the AI is a decent matchup for beginners but can be predictable at times.

Update: Even better with the map editor and workshop update. You can now play with your friends on maps that you created yourself.

I would rate this:

Overall - 7/10

Strategy - 10/10

Graphics - 7/10

Originality - 9/10

Replay ability - 4/10

This game is great fun and it seemingly has the perfect balance of R.N.G. and strategy. I have never found myself in a spot where bad R.N.G. couldn’t have been avoided. Playing with friends is great if you can, but the AI are a good challenge. (The AI NeuralNewt on hard can put up a great fight.) This game isn’t really complete yet, I heard of some additions and maybe a campaign being added later on but the game as it is is fantastic- in concept. As I said don’t let its retro graphics fool you. It can drag out and be a bit and become, well, less nuanced to state it simply, and after playing it for a while, both through playing many rounds and/or long games.

Really fun game, quite addictive when you get the hang of it. Things get a little clunky when multiple characters are interacting in one animation, each throwing the other off their sequence of movements, but for the most part this is a really cool unique game I recommend.
