NCradle: An 80s Synth Adventure

Tech Support: Error Unknown

In Tech Support: Error Unknown, you land a job in a phone company called Quasar Telecommunications. Becoming part of (you guessed it) the tech support team, you start out as a level one technician. After learning the ropes and reading up on the Quasar Wiki (or deciding to just wing it), you’ll be able to try and solve the customer’s problem. At first, you’ll only deal with giving out solutions the customer can do at home and if that doesn’t work or they’re not comfortable doing it themselves (like changing their screen which, yah, I get) or escalating it to a level 2 technician. You’ll only be able to interact with the customers with a pre-approved chat menu that will give out generic messages that correspond with the option you choose. This not only makes it easier on the player so you won’t get frustrated over the customers not recognizing what you’re saying and also shows how Quasar operates. They want their support to be fast and not able to speak out about anything else, especially if the customer is insulting them.

So this game is sitting on both ends of the spectrum. On one hand, it’s a fun and hilariously too real sim for anyone who has worked customer service in general. Example:
Me: Hi! I’m with Quasar! What seems to be the problem?
Customer: My fone doesnt woek
Me: (Internally, yeah I figured that’s why you’re calling you idiot) Oh no! What happened?
Customer: I don’t know, these things happen! FIX IT.
Good
The game lets you balance support tickets, figuring out what various issues are and solutions. Some customers are reasonable, others are incredibly obtuse. The game is hilarious in this regard and the game play offers different kinds of upgrades to keep things interesting and give you a sense of progression.

Orwell: Keeping an Eye On You
Preface
This review is being written before the conclusion of the game in episode five. I’ve played through the first four episodes a couple times exploring different outcomes, however, as episode five is not out yet I’m not able to comment on the totallity of the story.
The Machine
Orwell has a very close Person of Interest vibe. The government of the fictitious country has obtained a Machine, or System, that surveils the populous gathering information however it does not act on the gathered information. The idea of the game is that the system, aptly named Orwell, isn’t able to decern human subtlety, sarcasim, or deciet. As such, the fictious government has outsourced the task of resolving conflicts in the data, and identifying what is relevant and what is not. You as the player take on this role as an outsider to the country, tasked with sifting through the data that Orwell gives you access to inorder to identify person(s) of interest. This is a role somewhat like Person of Interest’s Harold Finch.

Intro
Orwell: Keeping an Eye On You is a massive information gathering system where you, an investigator, is taking a role in sorting the relevant data and fix conflicting data that the system gathered to assist a crime. The game has story branching that persists over 5 chapters.

Hack Grid
Full disclosure: I was a playtester for this game.
In Hack Grid each level has a different setup of pieces and trails within a 4x4 grid (sometimes it’s smaller).
In order to move a piece, it must have a straight line of trails or empty sockets leading to a differently colored piece. What makes the grids interesting is not only the different setups of pieces, but also the way the trails connect between them; It varies from level to level, and sometimes the lack of a direct trail between two pieces can trip you up, if you are not paying enough attention to the trails.

Do you have some free time during your evening? Do you like puzzle games? Are you nostalgic for DOS aesthetics? Great, then Hack Grid is a game just for you!
This is a well-made game. Sure, it’s relatively short, but I think it has just enough puzzles to explore its simple, yet entertaining gameplay. I didn’t encounter any bugs, it runs smoothly. Graphics are minimalistic, very nice, and you can spice them up a little with CRT filter. Puzzle themselves have a right level of difficulty, and you get some new mechanic once in a while, so you don’t get bored.
