Ancient Cities

So, I think I have enough time to comment on this now. As a disclaimer, I never backed the game but saw it a year ago, read all the stories about the time it’s taking, that the game was empty, the devs not being capable of this challenge and even that it was a scam. I put it off for these reasons, wanting to be sure I wasn’t wasting what is a lot of money for EA, but I do not think this is a scam any more, no. I think the devs have wasted time building a custom game engine and may have overfaced themselves, yes, but the level of detail and the continued work on the game to me shows this is a passion project that they will continue, if slowly.

The game looks amazing, much better than Dawn of Man (even with my Realistic Stone Age mod ). I will update with a proper review after I will play some more, but so far I can say this (compared to DOM):

  • You can choose to start playing from 10,000 BC up to 3500 BC, and the end of the last glacial age is depicted on the overview map, as it shows how snow evolves from one date to another, even from summer to winter (I do not know if anything else changes). In DOM you can only play in 10,000 BC.

Huge Change:

They removed the Draft feature that triggered every time you levelled up your character in a match… The single most important distinguishing feature that made this card game what it was for me and unique among the others.

Huge thumbs down for me, I had grown to love this game mainly due to the excitement of drafting at each level up. Without that, the game is as good as dead for me and not much different to other card games out there. Will still give it a chance, but I cannot express enough how disappointed I am in this and how much i disapprove this change.

After over 140 hours and almost 2 months playing it, It has interesting concepts but some serious downfalls.

Pros

A - Trying to Encourage Player Participation

This seems like a good idea that has been tried in different ways in other card games, just that by now I would have expected people to learn from those previous games and have guidelines to avoid mistakes made before.

B - Both Single and Multiplayer

Card games with both seem to do better than those with only 1 except for either modern roguelike games (Slay the Spire, Iris and the Giant, etc.) or older games from years ago when multiplayer was more rare (original Magic: The Gathering from 1997, etc.).

UPDATE 04-07-15 : I wish to redact “eye-watering” level of bugs - en lieu: “massive congestive heart attack”…

I do love the ideas in this game, it’s one of the few I have on my Mac, I spent hours designing ships, however I can ignore its terminal cancer no longer…

This game has so much potential, but it is like the grand ship rusting on the ocean floor for a ha’porth of tar…

The developer(s) have been so busy caught up in the far more creatively enjoyable process (for themselves as programmers and/or dreamers) of coming up with ideas for stuff to stick on deck: You know, metaphorical tennis courts, getting excited over the idea of having bubbles in the swimming pool…

UPDATE on review: Up to ver.1.39 as of 8/7/15 and I’ve not crashed in a long time. Those folks who had issues, should revisit the game. The latest tweaks are mostly graphical re: shields. I am updating this review to let people know the developer has consistently worked to fix bugs and add tweaks and even content, since the release. If you were on the fence about this game, or you were initially disappointed with glitches, play the updated game with a fresh outlook and I think you be pleasantly pleased.

Zombie Cure Lab

Zombie Cure Lab

Mindless hordes of zombies roam the earth. Humanity has fled underground. Now after years of research brave scientists dare to leave everything behind to retake the world. Build a lab in the wilderness and do what it takes to achieve your designation: Find the cure. Save humanity!

Plan ahead, layout rooms and furnish them with objects and machinery to set up your lab. Expand it to match the needs of your growing population. Comfy beds, diverse food and all kinds of skill training are essential to keep up the morale within the apocalypse. Provide shelter, defense and treatment chambers to buy time for your scientists and set them up with everything they need to heal the zombies.

Gather basic resources to construct and grow. Process, refine, cook and manage your resources to sustain your lab and its inhabitants. Prioritize jobs within your lab to maximize efficiency, plan ahead to foresee upcoming trouble and create your zombie curing masterpiece!

Your scientists will come up with new technologies and research points. New upgrades will allow you to harvest high tier materials and allow you to build late game tech science equipment. Unlock new machines and perks in the techtree and progress through all four tech tiers in order to finalize the cure.

Zombie healing is what it is all about, but first you need to catch zombies with your fancy freezing guns. Escort your well preserved ice block zombies to the treatment chamber. Here zombie-human hybrids - the ’humbies’ - will emerge and become new friends willing to help you out. But beware the humbie, if he’s in a bad mood he might be hard to predict and start rampaging your lab. Keep them in shape at all times to scale up your workforce and UNDO the apocalypse!

Aurora Dusk: Steam Age

Aurora Dusk: Steam Age

I bought this game yesterday for the $7.00 sale and have 31 hours as of posting this. Certainly feel I’ve already gotten my moneys worth and really hope this game continues to grow in content and perhaps have a sequel one day.

PROS:

~Almost everything you do lvls up a skill; farming, woodcutting, everything… character creation gives you a bonus in certain things but even a dwarven tank with armor making occupation can master magic, farming, or w/e just depends on how much you use it.

~The sheer amount of skills is staggering.

UPDATE: Negative Review status is no longer accurate, but neither is recommend. Though I find it fun, I am nuetral toward this game. Mainly because a couple old bugs still havent been fixed that are quite annoying to me.

Keep in mind this game isnt finished. Id only buy it if you want to help beta test and support the developer financially. If you have read the negative reviews thus far, you will have found out that none of them even played beyond the tutorial campaign. Even in its current state the game is still surprisingly quite fun and addictive. EDIT:The game is in much better shape now. No more freeze ups or crashes(at least for me)

Dominions 4: Thrones of Ascension

I’ve played several thousand hours of this game, and dominions 3. The only other game i’ve played anywhere near as much is tabletop rpgs. But i’m biased, old hand, fan, etc. This guy isn’t. Here’s what he had to say on the Steam forum.

@Stephen:

Earlier tonight, one of the most epic occurences I have ever seen in a video game occured. Seeing that as a sign of a good game and also worth telling about, I decided to post here for your reading pleasure. Since it is only due to a confusing chain of events that this occured, I’m going to tell the full story from start to finish. Enjoy.

Dear friends, I know that many would have you believe that the Pale Ones are extinct, save for the occasional emergence of an Earth Reader or the primitive Pale Ones that are sometimes encountered in remote regions. I am here to set the ancient records straight.

Long have I labored in service to the Ancients, dead and forgotten though they may be to most of the civilized world. Only after extensive research and tireless experimentation had I uncovered a ray of hope in the sea of Agarthan darkness.

Dracula’s Castle

Dracula’s Castle

Manage the castle by expanding it, then build and unlock new rooms granting new mechanics to explore. The Alchemist will allow you to equip Dracula with mystical tools, unlock the bat cave to improve Dracula’s Mist Form. The more you expand, the more your labour force can grow. You’ll need to grow your army of servants in order to accumulate enough soil to sail to England on the Demeter.

Travel Transylvania by night but watch out for Van Helsing. Stalk the towns of Transylvania, on the hunt for fresh blood, or attempt to overwhelm them to gain powerful bonuses. Feast, recruit laborers or “invite” a guest to the castle, the choice is yours. You’ll need to entrap Jonathan Harker to fulfill Dracula’s dark designs.

Grow Dracula’s power the way you want to. Dracula possesses different attributes such as Power, Cunning, Speed, Charm and Magick. Choose which ones to train and equip the right relics for your build. Build new monsters at the Alchemist’s Lab utilising recipes found in the Necronomicon! Craft or acquire new gear throughout your adventure.

Engage angry mobs, town militia and even dedicated vampire hunters in exciting tactical turn-based combat. Leverage Dracula’s powerful abilities and forms to outwit and overwhelm the enemy. The spoils of battle are yours! Hand over curios and materiel to the Castle Alchemist to craft new items and raise new monsters to join Dracula’s dark menagerie.

Follow the early plot of Bram Stoker’s masterpiece, the main goal centers around Jonathan Harker, Van Helsing and the trip to Carfax Abbey in England; but plenty needs doing in the dark corners of Transylvania. Engage in various side-quests given to you by Death and other denizens of the castle as you work on building up Dracula’s regional power.

WARNING: ABOUT THE GAME’S DISAPPEARANCE FROM YOUR LIBRARY

The game is not gone from your library, they simply merged it with Medieval II. To find it follow these steps:

  • Install Medieval II

  • Go to your steam game library

  • Right click on Medieval II

  • Below the “Play Game” option there should be 4 new options with the Kingdoms campaigns.

And now, after that prologue, LET THE REVIEW BEGIN!

Kingdoms is the expansion pack (yeah, not DLC, for 20 bucks you can buy actual, sturdy, nearly endless content) of Medieval II: Total War.

Don’t let my playtime fool you, i’ve played this game for over a decade ever since 2006 and probably sunk thousands of hours into this game on disc. This game features a combination of RTS (while in battles) and TBS (displayed on the campaign map), you move your armies around on a fully 3D map authentic to the terrain of Europe and Asia, Risk style.

There are many troop types from Horse Archers to Knights to Longbowmen even Elephants and Native American braves! this game is a perfect example of a well crafted Total War game. Yes it is old, even on max graphics a graphics snob might brush this game off right away but this game captures the atmosphere, lifestyle, turbulance and religious strife of the Middle Ages wonderfully.

In my opinion, I would recommend that you should buy this game if your considering to buy it. The game is pretty fun, considering that its graphics and everything are like pretty old but I like it. Also, If your considering to buy it and not sure, well make sure that you want to spend $20 and also to make sure that you like Star Wars or you just wanna play this because it looks fun (Which it is). Some things I suggest though when you buy the game.

Suggestions -

  • EAW (Empire At War)

Once bought the game “STAR WARS™ Empire at War - Gold Pack”, you will see either EAW (Empire At War) or FOC (Forces Of Corruption). Since you have bought the game just now, your experience might not be the best. Consider that you load into Empire At War, have some practice or do the campaign if you want, it was pretty good in my opinion. Skirmish Battles or Galactic Conquest in #Single-Player is pretty much your options to practice in EAW (Empire At War)
