Awesomenauts - the 2D moba

Awesomenauts - the 2D moba

Full disclosure here, I’m really involved with Awesomenauts. I’ve met the developers, Ronimo, in person more than twice and have been contracted to do work for them. I’ve cast tournament events in a professional capacity, wrote and recorded an in-game announcer, earned a “Golden Duck” (the Ronimo community award), and attribute any real success of my YouTube channel to Awesomenauts and the community that surrounds it. Awesomenauts is my single most played game of all time, sitting at 2800+ hours at the time of this writing, and has been a core part of my life for over 5 years. I’ve bought the game and the old expansions for myself and several friends, and contributed to their Starstorm Kickstarter for $162, and have bought most of the cosmetic skins available. With that said, let’s continue.

After two-three long years of Awesomenauts, I thought I might give you my full thoughts about this game, now that we are getting close to the end of the Starstorm DLC development and the new Matchmaking server.

First of all, my feelings toward this game are mostly positive. I love the general gameplay style, it’s like Smash Bros meeting MOBAs like Dota and LoL, 2D and stuff.

Music, oh boy, Sonic Picnic has really given their best with the game’s soundtrack.

Visuals, they’re great, I love the 1980’s cartoon style Ronimo has been going for, same goes for the characters and lore in general.

Alien Hallway

Alien Hallway

Well the title says it all, Alien Hallway, to be blunt aliens in hallways, that is all there is to the game. To say it was made simple is an understatement, this game is so basic in nature that even a little child can play it.

It’s like the most basic version of lane defense/attacking that you can think of, Tug of war like game, you have no actual control over the game at all, you pretty much spawn soldiers and they walk by themselves down the hallway towards the aliens, the fighting and everything is done automatically, you have controls over the grenades and that’s it. That is it for the entire game, there is no noticeable changes to the actual gameplay, as you play you earn money which can be spent after missions to upgrade your soldiers, as the levels progress more aliens and soldiers are unlocked.

“Get ready to send marines to kill aliens that no man’s seen before!”

That, my friend, is the plot of Alien Hallway in one sentence. Sorry for spoiling it. Alien Hallway is a light strategy game where you only manage the finances and hiring troops, who handle the destruction by themselves.

Drones get you money by scavenging electronics. With money you can send marines to destroy the alien teleporter, the objective of every level. The marines are AI controlled and you can only choose, when to throw their grenades. At the same time you must not allow the aliens to destroy your base.

BATTLECREW™ Space Pirates

BATTLECREW™ Space Pirates

BATTLECREW Space Pirates is a free-to-play multiplayer combat game that takes place in 2D pinball-like arenas. The game’s most glaring flaw is the paltry amount of content that it offers. There are only two game modes and four character classes, enough for an afternoon of fun before gameplay turns stale and moldy. Players who purchase the Unlimited DLC can play as many games as they’d like, while everyone else is given ten credits a day. Those credits can be exchanged for a single game. It’s a free-to-play strategy that discourages regular play and—spoiler alert for BATTLECREW Space Pirates’s Steam reviews—doesn’t jive with players.

The game itself is good, fun and graphically impressive. Some wierd restrictions and limitations imposed isn’t doing the devs any favours. Stuff like team deathmatch is only 2v2, that’s it. Not 1v1, not 3v3 etc. Gold Rush mode is always and only 4v4. They have 10 maps but decided not to make smaller and larger maps. You can only play 10 times a day then need to rely on token donations from paying members. Serious lack of players and marketing, it’s hard to find humans to play with. Selling tokens to play more than 10 matches is pretty disgusting, and a formula taken from mobile games which is the reason I don’t play mobile games. Really disappointing, especially from the devs who made Blue Estate.

Stupid game. It did had potential but stupid decisions hold it back.

100% pay or grind/waste your time to win. Not worth it because of that.

Edit: lol, if I change to not recommending it supposedly all my ratings will change. Even though I can completely change the text. But I DON’T recommend the game as is. I recommended it early on because it had interesting game play and early on progress is fast, however the game-play is totally unfair and require way too much grinding relative what you get back and the whole concept is unfair so … There’s better competitive games out there. This is more like a brag-show for those who have got the best gear and they will get even more of it because of that.. Yet another problem with the competitive game is that since it have so few players I assume you may end up with others at a different rank and maybe some in the higher ranks play together which mean they get to play with good people whereas the chance may be lower for you if you are playing alone.

Great coop game to play with my son. One problem is the lack of levels to play. I guess they try to compensate that with making the last panet impossible to beat, but trying impossible missions is getting boring after a while too. It would be no problem since there is a multiplayer part, where you can compete against other players or team of players. But it’s very hard to find people playing, and without a full stack of people the game is not starting. Another problem is that the server seems to have problems, more times the game just quits in the middle of the fight because of server problems.
