Monday Night Combat

Monday Night Combat

This game is a ton of fun.

It’s set in a gameshow in the future where you play as a contestent (one of 6 classes – Sniper, Support, Tank, Gunner, Assault, Assassin). There are 2 modes crossfire (PvP) and Blitz (Co-op). Crossfire is the mode that I play the most. Basically it’s a 6 on 6 arena where your goal is to get your team’s bots past the enemy’s turrets in order to take down their moneyball. Once the moneyball’s shields are down, you can attack it. Lots of strategy is involved though due to the varying skills that each of the classes come armed with. You’ll need to take out enemy players, enemy bots and enemy turrets before you can get your bots in. There are environmental hazards you can use to your advantage, you can upgrade yourself in-game, you can buy/upgrade turrets, and you can even purchase additional bots to come help you out.

A simple fast paced team based shooter with moba like elements, pick from one of 6 classes each with their own unique skills and abillities. All classes have their strengths and weaknesses each with their own personality. Monday Night Combat is my favourite game on steam and always will be! Unfortunately the games playerbase is very limited, but with the help of the MNC community games are organised regularly. So don’t threat too much about never being able to play. The commentator of the game spews out hilarious dialogue about your situation and the teams performance, the game even has a mascot that appears on the field that you can shoot for money and prizes!

Battleborn

Battleborn

Okay, let’s start with a simple statement about Battleborn: Battleborn is a game rife with marketing issues and inconvenient circumstances that, at its core, is a very fun and entertaining game that has only increased my respect for Gearbox.

Battleborn is a hero shooter/MOBA, which differs from multiple similar games like Overwatch and Paladins because it has universal mechanics for characters that are used to fight, and unique mechanics designated to maybe one or two characters in the roster. You pick one character at the beginning of a match or mission, and then you are stuck playing them for the rest of the match. This leaves a lot more competitive potential to the game than its charisma and PvE system will let on, but we’ll touch on that later.

Mishandled, overlooked and abandoned.

Weird or sometimes even broken mechanics, items and character skills (and their helix powers).

Misdirected by Gearbox trying to make a competitive game while a better choice was to focus on casual market instead.

Before this game entered ‘free trial’ you had to buy it and grind for hours in order to unlock new characters and important gear while OW straight up gave you all available characters right at the start.

Optimizations for some maps/areas were crap.

Megalith

Megalith

Having played this game since the PSVR beta, I must say I enjoy the gameplay to this day! It is a polished experience with a great art style and ambient sound that is immersive. The lobby filling mechanics allow for unending play sessions (against bots or players) and very rarely have I experienced connection issues. Character designs are impressive with attention to little details that you would not otherwise know are there unless you take the time to look closely. Fights against players are intense as the sense of presence becomes more clear during battles. The variety of abilities keeps each character fresh and makes for great counter selections during pregame lobby character picks.

Well polished game that feels like another VR essential title.

  • The game requires snap/smooth turning (if you turn with your body, the character’s body doesn’t turn with you)

  • Index Controller configuration isn’t the best for switching abilities. This can be changed easily. I recommend changing the ability swap control to left trigger.

  • No crouching. The game will snap you into a standing position if you crouch with your real body. This seems to be intended so that you can play seated.

  • No items to purchase mid-game for your hero (like most MOBA’s). Though you won’t be bothered by it nearly as much when you see how busy the game is even without items.

Warriors Of Titus - F2P

Warriors Of Titus - F2P

This is how a moba is done in VR! This game manages to marry what makes vr fun with the complexity of what you would expect in any standard MOBA. I do feel like the character’s guns could use a few more differences between them as they are a bit similar but in terms of abilities and gameplay the characters are all quite diverse.

Overall i would highly recommend you try out this game. If you arent a fan of mobas you might still find fun in this game if you enjoy shooting or a good feeling of progression.

needs polish but the visuals are overlookable as the gameplay is solid. one glaring flaw though - nobody friggin plays it and bots are boring.

The Smugglers

The Smugglers

You will smuggle goods or protect the law. Assemble a team and take on the role of a cunning smuggler or an honest law enforcement officer once per turn. Compete against an opposing team on one of many boards. Just like in real life, each team has different victory conditions, completely opposite, making you quickly identify with your new role. Will you tactically pursue victory or will you pull out the gun and settle the matter in a rather violent manner? Remember that the decision belongs to the whole group, and you won’t be able to win alone.

Each playthrough begins with smugglers landing in a cargo drop zone, and the law guards are tasked with melting down and stopping the smugglers from making their final escape. Cover your tracks and defend your loot or try to track down and stop the smugglers from escaping. Think your side will always win? Remember that in every gang there will be at least one agent who will certainly mess up the whole game…

Updated Review as of 7/7/20

v2.3.5

There’s really only 3 VR Moba style games currently battling.

Cradle of Sins/Megalith/Dead Shot Heroes.

CoS came out of the gates swinging and promising the world and in the last 6 months haven’t heard a peep or an update and their game is still really early access. Megalith had the big guns behind them being made from developers with AAA experience… launched their game, patched it a couple of times and continue to ignore the community. DSH has done nothing but get better.

An amazing VR MOBA. Very well put together and addictive game play. It offers the perfect balance of strategic game play without being overwhelming. The online player base is very welcoming, but even playing solo against bots is very satisfying. Be sure to check out the discord channel where the dev is extremely active and responds to player input. You’ll also get a sense of when people are generally online and looking for match. There is a tiny bit of a learning curve when you first start, but it’s not significant and is definitely worth it. The heroes play very differently, so try a few if you’re not initially convinced. If you’ve tried MOBAs before but got turned off by the toxic community, then you should definitely try this as the players are great!

AXYOS

AXYOS

This game is a pure example of what is wrong in the “Steam Greenlight” independent game industry. And mostly, what kind of trivial mistakes, the dervelopers, are doing in the process of developing an “indie game”.

First, about this “game”. It’s suppose to be a MOBA type FPS but the “game” is in this stage practically from the beginning with no actual or visable updates. The only visable change was the changing of the name of this “game” from RiP to AXYOS. Yes, I know that the “game” is in “Early Access” but it’s not, even, in an Alpha stage. I keep saying “game” with quotation marks because there is no game at all. Yes, the “game” looks like in the screen shots but that’s it. Only nice characters models, some weapons and some textures made with the UnReal DevKit. And that’s it!

The game itself? Great in appearance and has potential. However, that says little as many great games have been ruined by their publishers. And while in a single player game, that may not matter, in a multiplayer game, it is fundamental that the publishers understand the importance of not harassing their userbase. This review will not even touch how the game is at this point as with no players, you cannot adequately test a competitive multiplayer game.

This review will go briefly over what happened that I have to state the above:

Paladins®

Paladins®

I still have to give this a (weaker) Not Recommended. THE CARD SYSTEM DESCRIBED BELOW IS GONE, and the current system is better than ever, which is great. Gameplay currently lacks variety (all gamemodes boil down to 5v5 team deathmatch on similar maps), which made the gameplay get old quick for me, and unfortunately Hi-Rez is still doing some shady things (e.g., “forgetting” to mention in advance that they would change the price of voicepacks from being obtainable with the free currency, to exclusively bought with the premium currency). Daily quests are the main thing keeping me logging in.

I’ve made it past the 1200 hours mark and I think Im qualified enough to leave a decent review.

Paladins is a great game with a small and growing community. This game is not perfect, don’t expect it to be especially because it’s still in “BETA”. People Like to compare it to the big O, sure there are some similarities but this game is a completely different experience. It has more MOBA elements to it; loadouts, mounts and the credit system are what makes this game versatile and more complex. It has a great selection of “Champions” and i’m sure you’ll find someone that’ll match your playstyle.

Drifters Loot the Galaxy

Drifters Loot the Galaxy

TLDR: Pure fun. I had over 200 hours into the beta and I was able to be a part of the evolution of the game up to this point. Having dogfights in a shooter are some of the greatest video gaming moments I’ve personally experienced. This game really has no comparison. It borrows from the team based elements of Team Fortress and the movement of Global Agenda adding grappling to the mix to make it even more intense. There is a MOBA-esque leveling style and in-game upgrades you can choose. The end result is a clean, structured chaos that allows for big plays even while solo. There are also ZERO pay to win mechanics. I highly recommend trying it out.

This game is the best, the gameplay is amazing, the air animations are so fluent, and it really feels like your’e there with you’re character. Teamwork is a key essence of this game, and it is very satisfying when you pull of a brilliant play with you’re teamates. Voice chat has not been added yet, but as long as you join their official discord its not really a problem. The community in this game is the most pure and wholesome community you’ve ever seen. I promise you if you join the discord, you’ll be welcomed with open arms. At this state in the game, the devs hear you’re voice, and listen to you’re feedback, you’re opinion matters in this game, and criticism is welcomed. Just give it a try, you won’t regret it.
