Brimstone Brawlers - Early Access

Very promising game!

The game is beautiful, really good gameplay mechanics, nice rythm, interesting characters, this is a lot of fun no matter if you want to play it casually or if you want competitivity, both works really good!

Almost single developer so it’ll take a bit of time to reach its full potential but nothing can go wrong with so much passion! Dev is actually really active to take all the feedback from players (i’d say everyday) and really efficient so this is really reassuring to see that :).

I am not one to leave reviews, but this indie game really struck me.

I currently have a little over 5 hours in this game and I simply can not get enough and am pleasantly shocked by how much this game has to offer from replayability and skill cap ceilings. Talk about being competitive and enriching, every character has their own unique playstyle and combos that allow you to try to perform and perfect yet such a simple idea that I was able to pick up on the concepts immediately and over time have found out more and more things as I played, making me feel like I am growing with the game which is always incredibly fun.

Battlerite

I can’t praise this game’s design enough. I don’t think there’s a competitive game that is better than this game from a design perspective. I know this game gets compared to Dota or League of Legends a lot, but it’s really more like a top-down fighting game with simple inputs.

This game just doesn’t have parts that aren’t fun. The games are always short, and even if you lose the first two rounds, your opponents aren’t so overpowered that you don’t have a chance for the rest of the game, there’s tons of potential for comebacks and a game is never over till it’s over.

Sadly, no matter how good it is, I can’t recommend a game whose developer misled their playerbase and abused their trust.

See, during a time of ever-dwindling population of Battlerite, they announced a Royale game mode “to fill a void in Battlerite” (dev blog ). It’s fair to say that the majority of Battlerite players never asked specifically for a Battle Royale, but the community ran along with it, considering “new game modes” had always been mentioned on its roadmap and people understood the game could use a more casual experience.

UPDATE: Ninja Theory put their playerbase in silence and was even told by a dev that they were still working on the game. They have officially said that they will no longer support the game.

This is a multiplayer brawler by Ninja Theory, the people who made DMC: Devil May Cry, Hell Blade, and Enslaved. So you can expect good combat. Melee characters will usually have a basic combo that they can cancel abilities into, along with air attacks. Long range characters have their pew with dashes, turrets, claw attacks, etc. Different types of colorful tanks, healers, and attackers with a familiar Ninja Theory UK punk rock esthetic here and there. 2 main objectives, point capture and collect stuff and put it in a thing, with modifiers which are bad. Each character gets 2 abilities to choose from. You can also grind for skins, emotes, boards, exhausts, and ability mods. Some of the best skins will take you like 200 games with 1 character to get……………………………………………

This game is great. It’s not for everyone, but it is great. The gameplay is heavily team-oriented; you’re not going to get anywhere trying to pull off a solo playstyle because there is no snowballing. At the beginning of the game you’re as powerful as you’ll be at the end. This can be seen two ways: one could say that it’s bad because it doesn’t reward someone for being skilled(or lucky) or one(such as myself) could say that it’s good because you’ll never be put into a situation in which a comeback is entirely impossible short of your entire team disconnecting, which leads to the next topic: Disconnects. Players often disconnect when they’re losing and as far as I can tell there is no penalty for this, which is obviously a problem.Next up, the characters: They are all wonderful. They all look as if they could be the main character of their own game. In addition, there’s some physical disability representation; Buttercup lost her legs in a vehicle accident, Cass lost her legs to paraplegia and Kulev is dead. In addition, all of the characters have very unique movesets, such as Mekko(a dolphin in a mech) has a kit which revolves around blocking damage with a bubble shield in order to power up his abilities or Azrael, who has the ability to apply “Soul Eater” stacks with his basic attacks, which cause damage over time and power up his abilities(also, he can glide with his wings at the cost of Stamina). Stamina is the resource tied to dodging, which can be used to escape combos; Stamina is also used for a few abilities in the game, such as the aforementioned wings. If you don’t like how your character looks, there are many skins to be had if you’re willing to grind for them. There is no way to acquire skins with real-world currency; once you’ve bought the game, you need only to work for the skins. The skins themselves range from recolors to complete costume changes, but the characters are still generally quite recognizable regardless of the skin they’re using. In addition, there are skins available for the hoverboards(which most characters use to traverse the map more quickly) which are also bought with in-game currency. Also available for in-game currency are emotes and mods. Emotes are self-explanatory, though mods are less so.You can have a loadout of up to three mods, most of which signficantly alter your character’s feel. Some of the effects of certain mods are as follows:-Increasing your character’s HP-Decreasing one of your abilities' cooldowns-Increasing the range of your basic attacks-Giving you HP regen while using your Super-And more!Currently, there are two gamemodes available: Objective Control and Power Collection. In the first, you fight the other team over 1-3 objectives(some of which may move throughout the match), with your team gaining points towards victory based on how many objectives you currently control. The second has two phases: Collection and Deposit. In the collection phase you run around the map, destroying barrels with power cells in them which you need to collect. You drop all of your cells on death, so killing enemies to take their cells is always a good thing. The deposit phase consists of going to a dropoff point and standing still until your cells have been deposited. The first team to fifty cells wins.Their are a few maps, all with their own hazards such as two large trains which occasionally run through the middle of the map or gates of electricity which fry anyone who tries to go through. Each match will have a randomly determined map modifier applied, such as randomly appointing one player the “VIP”, giving them buffs until someone kills them and a new VIP is chosen.Ultimately, I highly recommend this game and hope that the community can grow larger, that the game might be better-funded and receive more updates. Though I received this game as a gift, I fully consider it worth the forty dollars it costs.

GUILTY GEAR 2 -OVERTURE-

GUILTY GEAR 2 -OVERTURE-

Underated gem.

Played it back when it was exclusively on Xbox 360 back in 2006-7, Spent countless hours skirmishing with friends. I got extremely hyped when I saw it come to Steam and I just had to instantly buy it and replay it.

Sure, its rough around the edges, has wonky controls at first, not the best voice acting or fluid animation. But once you get the hang of it and your personal theme music starts playing when you’re taking control of the map, then it’s definitely worth it.

It’s not a fighting game like its predecessors and it’s latest titles. This is a MOBA before MOBA’s were even a thing in the popular eye. Think Smite with minion control.

Guilty Gear as an action RTS game. It really is mindblowing to me. When I first heard about this game, I was optimistic. I mean, Guilty Gear is a fighting game series! It’s not a RTS or Hack n' Slash series! However, GUILTY GEAR 2 -OVERTURE- blends the fighting genre with the RTS genre very well. Somehow, ARC SYSTEM WORKS has found a way to keep the feel of the 2D fighting games on a 3d battlefield. Whether it be a few left-handed-reverse-grip swings with Sol’s sword to keep the bad guys away or a well placed gunflame into a crowd of nerds, the fighting feels somehow…. nostalgic, as if I was playing one of the 2d titles in the franchise. And commanding units (referred to as servants in game) is a nice, smooth experience, so you don’t have to draw up a whole Mona Lisa painting just to get your servants moving. It’s as easy as select, click, click, done. Fighting alongside your servants is pretty awesome, especially when 4 massive armies collide in an area and it’s just chaos.

You Just Come Try and Shoot Me…Pardner.

And, you’ll probably succeed, but, whether you drop me or I drop you, or Ghin drops all of us simultaneously, you will have a lot of fun.

Let’s get down to brass tacks for a moment. Win or lose, you will have fun. That is what gaming is about, having fun. This is competitive, tense, immersive, with lovingly handcrafted visual and audio ambiance; sometimes you will be overwhelmingly outmatched and other times you will have just about the optimal balance of play. At times, you will pull off the perfect set of moves, in the perfect rhythm and feel like you just entered the Matrix–so under control and automatic, not thinking, just doing, and it’s utterly satisfying–“no mind”. Other times you will enter freak-out mode, pumping buttons on your controls with all the deftness and poise of a hyperactive three year old, listening to the repetitive, panicky dry firing of the empty chamber of your gun, about as able to push the “Reload” button for your weapons as you are capable of doing calculus speedily on an abacus, because you have straight lost your cool. Probably multiple times in the same game.

This is going to be a simple pros and cons list:

Pros:

  • Game’s aesthetic design is lovely and the wild west theme is applied pretty decently.

  • Characters are fitting and unique enough but they haven’t created personalities and taunts for them which could make the player feel more attached to characters.

  • The thing I hated the most about MOBAs, limiting the game for only one map is not apparent here and most of the maps feel authentic enough.

  • All characters have three unique powers which are all fitting to the characters but some of them are useless imo, like The Deserter’s impale attack as it takes too long to charge and easy to miss.

Shadow Arena

Shadow Arena

I’m Eiene, rank5 EU and previous rank1 EU in Solos & Teams during the Beta. The following review is going to be purely objective based on the CURRENT performance of the game. I had 100% winrate in Solo and close to 100% winrate in Teams (before what I will state later started happening) https://imgur.com/a/0FR69en

The game has an absurd amount of potential, but it’s not polished enough to have been released in Early Access whatsoever. After a long period of Beta, it’s heart breaking and saddening that they haven’t fixed two of the biggest bugs in the game: the ridiculous amount of desync and the invisible glitch.

Real player with 143.0 hrs in game

My first review on Steam;

Shadow Arena - fast paced battle royal with RPG elements such as gear and skills.

Multiple different classes to play and hundreds, if not thousands of hours of fun.

Some sort of character progression that lasts between games, but it’s minor so it really doesn’t make or break the game.

If you like either the battle royal genre or Black Desert Online (BDO)-like games, you’d probably love this.

A lot of skills required to progress far in the ranked system and the game only gets more fun the more you play it. It’s kind of like BDO fighting system, except a lot more simplified. You have four skills connected to each character and two skills that is the same for all; one defensive and one “blink”.

Hunger Dungeon

Hunger Dungeon

TL;DR: Test the game, be fair with it. It’s a MOBA, it’s fun. Don’t mind the graphics and all that stuff. If you’re reading the TL;DR you probably don’t have that much time and SHOULD BE TRYING/PLAYING THE GAME!

First of all, Hunger Dungeon is a MOBA(A.K.A Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). In this game, you (normally) fight 3 opponents in an arena. You have to kill your opponents in various rounds until you reach the final round, where you have to collect energy cristals to escape the dungeon, while you try to survive hunger, buy scrolls and fight the other players. There’s also team deathmatch, that’s exactly the same team, but at most it’s 3v3. And lastly Dragon Mode, where 4 players fight together to defeat 3 Dragons and get their scrolls.

Real player with 54.7 hrs in game

Very fun fast paced battles, no two heroes play the same.

Easy to play, hard to master.

The amount of build options availible is amazing. You earn gold during rounds, and between rounds you can buy spell scrolls and equipment. Each hero has an activated ability, and 1-4 passives. Most heros have 3 spell scroll slots, and 2 equipment slots. Making for quite a few friendship breaking combos.

The only cons i have found myself so far besides a couple to expect bugs, and it not having quickmatch system, Is that some of the game mechanics are not fully explained, so i find myself giving tips to others almost every game. ^_^
