Awesomenauts - the 2D moba

Awesomenauts - the 2D moba

Full disclosure here, I’m really involved with Awesomenauts. I’ve met the developers, Ronimo, in person more than twice and have been contracted to do work for them. I’ve cast tournament events in a professional capacity, wrote and recorded an in-game announcer, earned a “Golden Duck” (the Ronimo community award), and attribute any real success of my YouTube channel to Awesomenauts and the community that surrounds it. Awesomenauts is my single most played game of all time, sitting at 2800+ hours at the time of this writing, and has been a core part of my life for over 5 years. I’ve bought the game and the old expansions for myself and several friends, and contributed to their Starstorm Kickstarter for $162, and have bought most of the cosmetic skins available. With that said, let’s continue.

After two-three long years of Awesomenauts, I thought I might give you my full thoughts about this game, now that we are getting close to the end of the Starstorm DLC development and the new Matchmaking server.

First of all, my feelings toward this game are mostly positive. I love the general gameplay style, it’s like Smash Bros meeting MOBAs like Dota and LoL, 2D and stuff.

Music, oh boy, Sonic Picnic has really given their best with the game’s soundtrack.

Visuals, they’re great, I love the 1980’s cartoon style Ronimo has been going for, same goes for the characters and lore in general.

Full stop, this game is D..E..D Dead. You can find some random games every now and then but there should be no expectation to join random lobbies as the game died off years ago. You should only aim to purchase this title if you have friends that will be playing with you. I do check randomly for games but they are typically locked or just a 10 wave.

That being said you should add this game to your Wishlist and grab the 5 pack bundle when it goes on Sale. I think this game is worth 25 bucks for the 5 pack and it is a steal if your group of friends like these survival wave based games. This game is best enjoyed in groups of 4 or 5 in my opinion. Three is a decent time but you won’t be pushing as hard as it is harder to cover map objectives on the harder difficulties.

A year or so back I purchased the Fatshark Bundle for myself and a friend. At first glance all the games looked entertaining and the reviews were good. Letting the game run for cards it unlocked one achievement and in doing so dropped my overall percentage score, it is because of this that I have played this game a lot sooner than I was planning.

Before I get into the details of why you shouldn’t purchase this game let me tell you what’s good about it first. The game itself looks good and runs smoothly at 60fps. The gladiators/arena remind me of Borderlands with it’s wise cracking commentator and post apocalyptic atmosphere. It shares the same universe as Krater, so if you wish to find out more details about this world you can do so if you please. Your character’s upgrade system although improperly balanced is fairly fleshed out, allowing for a wide variety of customisation. It’s got achievements, trading cards, a cloud save, and cooperative play, all of which work perfectly.

Battleborn

Battleborn

Okay, let’s start with a simple statement about Battleborn: Battleborn is a game rife with marketing issues and inconvenient circumstances that, at its core, is a very fun and entertaining game that has only increased my respect for Gearbox.

Battleborn is a hero shooter/MOBA, which differs from multiple similar games like Overwatch and Paladins because it has universal mechanics for characters that are used to fight, and unique mechanics designated to maybe one or two characters in the roster. You pick one character at the beginning of a match or mission, and then you are stuck playing them for the rest of the match. This leaves a lot more competitive potential to the game than its charisma and PvE system will let on, but we’ll touch on that later.

Mishandled, overlooked and abandoned.

Weird or sometimes even broken mechanics, items and character skills (and their helix powers).

Misdirected by Gearbox trying to make a competitive game while a better choice was to focus on casual market instead.

Before this game entered ‘free trial’ you had to buy it and grind for hours in order to unlock new characters and important gear while OW straight up gave you all available characters right at the start.

Optimizations for some maps/areas were crap.

I absolutely LOVE this game and have for a very long time obviously since I’ve played it a lot as is evident from my hours (there is also even more hours besides whats shown on just Steam alone). I put a lot of my time, money, effort and care into this game for many years and I don’t regret it even with the crazy amount of time and money I put into it.

If we are going to judge the game solely on game-play alone then it’s awesome and a really fun and great game but it does have some issues with bugs (not too many but still they exist especially old bugs that should’ve been fixed a long time ago), servers suck too, unbalances within the game-play like gods (usually the newly released gods tho) and matchmaking oh god the MATCHMAKING like don’t even start me.. However no game is perfect and so regardless of those I’d almost recommend it just for the fact alone that it is a good game and for how much I love it, however I cannot look past the MYRIAD of other problems it has beyond just game-play and namely things like the greedy+useless Devs and the toxic community.

A game that truly grasps the idea of helping those in dire need to escape their reality.

After allowing peru to play on our servers, and bought accounts in 4-6k. This game has truly made a better place to find friends of South America, and help people fully understand the hardships and struggles these people go through by having feeding South Americans only play Pos 1-2 or jungle. It opened up a world of hard working, can collecting children to gather change and be fortunate enough to play at their internet cafe’s and flood US West/East. God Bless them.

Dragons and Titans

Dragons and Titans

Dragons and Titans. Let’s talk.

I saw this game, saw dragons, and thought “Well, why not try it out. It’s free so let’s see what it’s about.” And thus learned this is what a MOBA is called. For what it is, if you have no experience with any MOBAs it really is good. It’s a great “Get your feet wet” kinda game. Hell, I spent over 850 hours playing it so it must be good right? Right?! Well, frankly, if there was a “neutral” button, I’d put it. If I had made my review a year ago, it’d be an absolute thumbs up reccomendation. As of now, I can’t. It pains me to say it because this game is boat loads of fun. Was, I should say…

wow it has been like 8 years since i first played this game…back then when it was only available in facebook, if it didn’t move to steam, i might have more playing hours than that lol…i didn’t even knew it got shut down ever since the servers got bugged and everyone lost their data (i lost all my skins and runes, submitted a ticket but nobody replied so i decided to drop it forever).

when it was in facebook, we have 800+ up to 1k players per day. it might sound too little compared to other MOBAs but no long queue time and could actually get into a game without bots was a miracle. when facebook no longer supports the game, slowly, our player base dropped to 100+, everyday i came online, all i see is just the few same people in my rank. the longest queue time was 2 hours and i didn’t get to play that day. then, i took a long hiatus, and when i re-logged in, d&t announced their servers got bugged, i can’t get into a game and can’t retrieve all my lost purchases. i didn’t log in ever since.

This is how a moba is done in VR! This game manages to marry what makes vr fun with the complexity of what you would expect in any standard MOBA. I do feel like the character’s guns could use a few more differences between them as they are a bit similar but in terms of abilities and gameplay the characters are all quite diverse.

Overall i would highly recommend you try out this game. If you arent a fan of mobas you might still find fun in this game if you enjoy shooting or a good feeling of progression.

needs polish but the visuals are overlookable as the gameplay is solid. one glaring flaw though - nobody friggin plays it and bots are boring.
