functional

functional

As it is right now, this is a game for programmers. If you have existing knowledge of functional programming and lambda calculus, and plenty of patience for working with new tools, then this game is plenty fun! If this isn’t you, though, then I would firmly say wait to see what this developer puts out next; if it’s anything like this, it’ll be very interesting.

It is very fun to go through a programming game with such a powerful mini language! After maybe a hundred hours across TIS-100, Shenzhen I/O and Exapunks, I finally get to make function calls, compose higher order functions, and extend a language using itself. It’s just refreshing seeing these front and center, and I think these are good puzzles built to explore it all from the ground up. It stops before getting ‘endgame Zachtronics’ brutal, but this was the right level of challenge for me.

I love the overall idea, but the game really needs polishing.

When I was playing TIS-100 and Human Resource Machine, I wondered, since people can make profitable games based on the Von Neumann model, why nobody ever tried making one based on functional language? So I bought this game the moment I saw it, and I enjoyed it!

It is amusing to reinvent

! Y-combinator and Church numerals and solve problems using data structures and recursive functions that I gradually developed during the game. The puzzles should be reasonably challenging for anyone that enjoys learning math or programming. (And probably can lead you to learn functional languages)

I normally avoid “simulator” games, as they are typically straight-up bad memes. But this one was alright.

Crowd Simulator is a series of physics puzzles in tricky situations with crowds of people blocking the way, as you try to make it to e.g. the full elevator, or walk through the street full of stuck-up people.

There’s a very vague story or connection between the levels that disappears completely at some point.

You can grab certain items but otherwise there’s little interactivity. But (almost) every level has a couple of side quests or extra tasks to complete, rewarded with achievements.

Defentron

Defentron

Defentron is a pretty relaxing game, despite being a tower defense. The retro look and sound are well done and suitably nostalgic, without needing to rely on gratuitous particle effects, waves, or flashes like some other retro games or genres like to use. The different types of towers all have fun and unique properties, and the enemy variety and additions from stage to stage kept me thinking a good amount, rather than finding one strategy I liked and just using that on everything.

Being able to power up a given turret in a pinch was cool too, but if I have one criticism about that mechanic’s game balance, it’s that it feels necessary to use that function on the basic turrets (at least for the early game), which destroys them afterwards, and it felt like a bit of a waste. That is, instead of trying to plan out placement or turret types to counter different contingencies, I felt like I had to budget my resources to account for “necessary losses” rather than just “acceptable losses,” which made it feel less like a puzzle game at those parts, and more like the traditional gratuitous enemy spam TD games that I don’t like nearly as much as this one.

Defentron is a fun tower defense, and certainly a challenging one. Many levels can really get you stuck until you figure out the right sequence of towers and upgrades to buy, but that difficulty gives the game a lot more longevity and replayability, specially if you are going to try and complete all achievments.

It took me 14 hours to complete everything the game had to offer, which I feel is a good value for the pricetag

Domino Sandbox

Absolutely fab game, Even from the first 1 1/2 hour I have had joy in this game, moderately high physics and a great way to relax just watching all of the dominoes topple. It may be in early development but it’s great!

A modest domino game, although with a few downsides:

No options tab to change anything, while this game doesn’t need options as much as other games, the idea is there.

Not sure how to make the dominos diagonal.

Can’t make the skybox itself change colors.

Ability to name save files.

Only 3 types of dominos, I’m sure the developer will add more soon.

There are probably a few more I could think of.

Here’s the pros:

Lightweight, only 32 megabytes if I recall.

Ability to stack dominos.

Undoing dominoes.

Basically this was just a cash grab port of the mobile versions of the game. Nothing feels like it was designed to work with PC. Hell you can’t even play this in a window. It’s full screen or bust. Also this version doesn’t get any of the updates the mobile versions has been getting.

Gameplay wise, it’s a really clunky interface to select one car to go through vs a full on green light. You can accidentally click too fast and let a car go through when you wanted to it to stop. There’s also this weird thing where sometimes an extra car will squeeze through one of the lights even though you only wanted one to go through.

I love this game! It is easy to learn, but the later levels get tricky!! I was a big fan of the game Mini Metro. This game is quite similar.

Great for transit-game lovers.

I’m not good at writing reviews, I’m sorry, but I really like this game!

I would love to see a Dark mode or Night mode added to change the white background to black.

Aquarium Simulator

Aquarium Simulator

To call this an “aquarium simulator” is a gross overstatement. If anything, a screensaver simulator, perhaps?

There is little (alright, close to nothing) to actually do and whatever you do has no effect at all. If you don’t “feed” your “fish” (which resemble more a poor cartoon approximation, even in cartoonish style), nothing happens. If you pack 500 fish in the tank, same as if there were 2, except you get more eggs, which you then have to click one by one to harvest (I’ve garnered around 400 in one sitting after two hours with the game closed), which gives you more money… with which you can buy, well nothing much really. Just more of the same fish approximation.

This game, this damn game. It broke me. I never ever thought I would find the perfect game, but here it is, I have found the diamond in the rough. For such an amazing, powerful, impactful, experience, it’s too cheap. In my opinion, this piece of art is way too cheap.

If I had known that Aquarium Simulator would have been this amazing, I would have demanded they raise the price for me.

My life has peaked, I have experienced many amazing things, nothing as powerful and divine as this creation.

I have no complaints, I have no problems, After such an experience, my life is complete. Thank you BJgamesIND, thank you for creating such a master piece, thank you for the graphics, thank you for the time. thank you.

This game really has a lot problems; some of which are probably unsolvable due to the game design.

First, some pros:

1. The command line design is actually the simplest I have ever seen; this makes controlling a lot easier.

2. The game runs smoothly and has a clean interface.

Now the cons:

Let’s start with something that can be fixed:

1. Graphics error: I see a “discord” button on the airport selection page. (Fixed)

2. Gameplay Bugs: I have experienced problems like collision, even with vertical separation. I have also experienced bugs that planes fail to intercept the localizer even I have guided the plane to the orange line. (Fixed)

Flower Design

In the brief time since FLOWER DESIGN was first released, it has blossomed into something rare. It is obvious that this DEV has a love for beauty (as well as desire to share it), and that love is what motivated him to embark on this project. But he also created something of beauty that encompasses game concepts (and even achievements now!)

When FLOWER DESIGN first launches, few components of flower arraigning are available. The player has a single pot, and very few flowers and accessory plants. The player can select a background, and the related lighting and shadows. At first, I considered that this might be a detriment for appealing to the more impatient of today’s gamers. To actually REQUIRE numerous finished arrangements to be “sold” into the game, to collect game currency in order to access more pots and plants? Would players be willing to wait, and work, to produce more elaborate arrangements, after starting off with possibilities so simple and basic?

Real player with 11.6 hrs in game

I play this game when I’m supposed to be going to bed but not ready to get off electronics yet. It’s very simple, you pick flowers for a pot and can change just about all the parameters for the flowers and pot, then sell your creation when you’re done; the more parameters you’ve edited, the more it sells for. This game works perfectly on a touch screen tablet, and is pretty relaxing, except for the fireworks sounds when you sell an arrangement.

My major complaint about this game is not being able to move plants around in the pot. There’s a “pose” button that will change their location and direction at random, but sometimes plants will just stay stubbornly clustered away from one corner of the pot. Add the ability to move plants instead of all the other edits the developer is making to this game, and get rid of the fireworks sound, and it would be perfect!
