Soul Reaper

Soul Reaper

Soul Reaper quickly hooks player attention with an effectively deployed progression system, and does a fine job in offering multiple avenues to keep engagement levels high. While enjoyable for the most part, its grindy nature can render it tiresome, and the current lack of proper side quests beyond feats leaves something to be desired. Still, it’s a good debut, and a fresh ambassador for the RPG genre that leaves a lasting impression by defying convention.

Really nice, and fast paced; monster-catching strategy RPG. The game has aspects of idle-game style gameplay, however the strategy comes from squad optimisation, gear socketing, and order placement (there are ‘row bonuses’ available, but those’re kinda beyond me at the current time of writing, lol).

I made a fairly in-depth, but still very early, impressions video; available here:

Really looking forward to discovering more monsters, and more strategic optimisation in the hours and days to follow.

It’s a fun metroidvania game. However, there’s nothing really new here : you explore areas, find items defeat enemies and bosses. The one interesting mechanic is its portal system where you can lay down some portals almost anywhere for fast travelling. You have a set amount of portals you can use and you can only save in the main area so putting portals requires some thought. Also the character switching mechanic is fun to use but it doesn’t really make anything unique.

Despite being a short game to complete, it has a LOT of charm put into it. The overall presentation is superb. There’s a surprising amount of touhou characters and references you can find. There is an incentive to explore and find everything in this game.

Truly a Dark Souls of Touhou games. On a serious note, that is pretty much a 2D Souls like about greatest Tengu duet! Basicaly you controling Aya and Momiji, Aya is fast, can evade and has ranged attacks: Momiji is strong, has a shield to block attacks and can RUN (including wall running). Other than that it’s your typical metroidvania-souls like game. Buy! Aquastyle makes great games, and this one is not an exception,

Love this game so far. It’s slightly challenging but still fun to play. Music & graphics are great. Gameplay is smooth and responsive with a controller (used an XBONE controller). Reminds me of NES Goonies II.

Initially, I had left a bad review for this game after rage quitting it within 30 minutes of gameplay. But I gave it another try and changed my mind about it. It’s just not a casual platformer that I expected it to be like the beautiful pixel graphics had me believe it was. In fact, the game is a little challenging because it feels like your hero Oliver always has lube under his shoes - he keeps sliding off every now and then.

But you do get used to the controls and get quite good at it as you play more. There is a sense of achievement as you progress in the game because you have to put in some work to gather powerups for Oliver. The game also gets a little easier with the power-ups as they enable you to skip the nasty parts like narrow slippery platforms that were a real pain while you were trying to reach the powerups during the initial part of the game.

Clever transformation mechanic and I see true potential in this game. I liked that you allow the player to discover the significance of each summons ability on our own, resulting into satisfaction when we figure it out. This is a good first game coming from this team, and looking forward to more content. I do recommend for the first opponent to not be as difficult as he is now. Eventually I figured out his pattern, but the first few rooms should be easy to prepare the player for the challenge that lies ahead. I recommend others to play and see the potential. There’s definitely something good here. Thumbs up from me.

The Serpent Rogue

The Serpent Rogue

The Serpent Rogue is an action-adventure game built around exploring a medieval fantasy world, mastering the art of alchemy, and taming wild creatures.

You play as the Warden, a mysterious alchemist, who needs to put their skills to protect this realm from the encroaching Corruption. Craft, brew, boil & concoct and protect the realm from The Serpent Rogue!

EXPEDITION THROUGH THE UNKNOWN

The Serpent Rogue has laid down roots on Mount Morbus, wherefrom its seething Corruption spreads and threatens to overwhelm the realm. It is your task as the Warden to confront it and restore balance to the natural order of things. Explore every corner of the map, unearth secret passages and gain knowledge to stand against the incoming disaster.

CRAFT POTIONS & EXPERIMENT

The game is heavily focused on crafting and experimenting with multiple types of potions and receipts. Use alchemy skills to transform or create situations to your own advantage.

Set up your mixing table and help the denizens of this cursed land; take their quests and earn resources to further your exploits.

CHOOSE YOUR ACTIONS

All your actions can create interesting sequences of cause and effect. Gather too many pets in one place and this will attract blood-thirsty Reapers that feed on alive. Forget to bury the perished ones and your location starts to attract corpse-eating ghouls, which attack everything on their way. Gather too many items in one location and be ready to deal with plague-spreading vermin.

EVOLVE

You can transform yourself or anyone else into… well, anyone! Brew potions that change certain aspects of creatures you meet on the way. Alter your body, so that poison will heal you, or use special abilities to other species.

Wreak havoc or create a flawless mechanism from a chicken farm that produces shovels…

It’s all up to you!

A Valley Without Wind

A Valley Without Wind

This is a strange game; an endless metroid-style game where you explore a desolate world while you build structures on the overworld map to help you do so. The graphics are bizarre, mixing realistic buildings and backgrounds with PSX era particle effects and low animation sprites. The music is NES-style chiptunes mixed with high fidelity instruments. Like I said, strange.

Much has already been said of this game’s strengths and weaknesses already. I enjoyed my time with it, but I will always remember it for a different reason, one which I will detail below.

A Valley Without Wind is a good game that suffers from obvious design mistakes that tragically prevent it from living up to its potential. So instead of a great game that can be played endlessly we get a game that’s good for a while but runs out of steam once you’ve seen everything it has to offer. The tragedy is that it was clearly aiming to be played endlessly with it’s endless ocean and bottomless caves, and people clearly put a lot of work into creating a wide variety of weapons, enemies, and mini-games, but they were putting their effort in the wrong direction.

Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition

Darksiders II Deathinitive Edition

Darksiders and its sequel remain some of my favorite games from the previous generation. The first game was clearly and deliberately derivative of some of the best titles in history, Zelda and God of War chief among them. The dungeon crawling and puzzles were top notch, as was the sense of progression and the combat, while simple, was visceral and satisfying in a way that Zelda’s never was. As important, however, was the story which was filled with engaging characters and a lore that was much more interesting than something based on Biblical mythology (not an uncommon road to tread) had any right to be. War, Samael, Vulgrim, Ulthane and Uriel were all extremely memorable characters.

Darksiders 2 is an improvement over the first game and holds its own even in 2018.

** If you prefer a video review, check the bottom of this post **

The sequel’s story actually runs parallel to Darksiders 1. You are introduced to Horseman Death as he tries to free his brother War by resurrecting the kingdom of Man. To do this, the horseman ventures to different lands and realities while taking on a host of mobs and platforming activities.

PLOT

Since it runs parallel to the first game, you still have the same scenario. You have the war between Heaven and Hell, the Nephilim born of the union between Angels and Demons and the Kingdom of Man. The final war was triggered inadvertently and War was framed for it. In this game, Death looks for a way to save his brother.
