Dreaming Sarah

Dreaming Sarah

“Dreaming Sarah” is an adorable (and somewhat trippy) side-scrolling exploration game in which you play a young woman trying to wake up from a coma. Naturally this involves being harangued by a pirate in the middle of a desert, falling through the inside of a giant grandfather clock, and accidentally causing a massacre in a nightclub populated by aliens. (At times “Dreaming Sarah” almost plays like a journey through a magic-mushroom fiend’s dream journal).

There’s no real plot to speak of, other than the coma thing, which is spoiled in the Steam description of the game and not really integral to the game experience anyway (hence the lack of an alert in this review). The joy of “Dreaming Sarah” comes not from the sliver of a story but rather from the little throw-away surprises in its short, stream-of-consciousness levels (what is UP with that happily undead manor-keeper anyway?), the charm of the 2-D retro graphics, and above all from the excellent musical score by Anthony Septim (included with the game). The modern vibe of Septim’s ambient/trip-hop score provides a nice counterpoint to the old-school graphics and gameplay (one button to jump, one button to choose an inventory item), and dispels any hint of tedium from the game’s central exploration mechanic.

A surreal little side scrolling adventure platformer, with minimal platforming elements and lots of exploration through weird but well made and definitely dream-like 16bit imagery.

I’m slowly realizing that I’m bad at these exploration type games. There is a certain amount of patience required to get lost in its weird maps that go all over the place, in two directions or even looping onto themselves, and that require you to revisit them after finding certain items to see whether something new has unlocked. I’m apparently also not great at solving a couple of its slightly more abstract, lateral-thinking-required puzzles, so yes, a walkthrough was consulted. However, the game is good at creating a sense of controlled bewilderment that makes the exploration interesting, most of the puzzles do seem to resolve themselves after a bit of exploration or trial and error, and the different locations were distinct enough to keep fascinating even after getting lost in them for the n-th time. It helps that the game isn’t particularly long (about 2-3 hours, depending on how lost you get), so frustration is kept at a minimum.

17+ || 2D Metroidvania

Jump and ~FLOAT~ through a world of Mixed-Media.

Little Ghost focuses on platform challenges rather than combat.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ∩

The entire game has been built around the float-jump mechanic.

1️⃣ There’s a Solid Two Hours of gameplay in the demo, more if you want to collect all items and goodies.

2️⃣ There is also a clearly defined beginning/middle/end to the demo experience.

3️⃣ Little Ghost moves at a slower pace, so there’s no time-crunch twitchy anxiety, but that doesn’t mean it is easy.

4️⃣ The platforming will become difficult as you progress, though never unfair.

This is a fairly precise platformer, playing with a controller is recommended, though not required.

FIND POWER-UPS & COLLECTABLES

The world of Little Ghost and the game’s art style present really fun and unique opportunities for hiding easter-eggs and collectables.

There are 3 types of collectables: Items, Mp3s, and Tarot Cards.

MUSIC

One of the demo quests has you searching for scattered mp3s, which you can listen to on your in-game music player.

(The mp3 player is a little Penguin by the way; he’s great, we love him.)

His collectable playlist features music from: GULL, It’s Not Night It’s Space, miRthkon, Nehedar, Christopher North, Pattern Recognition, Andras Jones, The Donkeys, and Jesse Miller, as well as podcasts from: 42Minutes, Radio8Ball, Always Record, and Fine Just Fine.

Streamers have our permission to broadcast the Little Ghost music & podcasts on their streams and playthrus.

Achievement is a national flag and easy to unlock.

Just start playing the game, it unlocks all.

But that’s the only reason I decided to buy this game.

Cheap game from Russia. With this I mean, theres zero quality.

You die from one hit, controls are horrible and theres no tutorial or story.

Whats the point of this game? Nobody knows.

Stay away for now, might be OK after full release, but now it’s part of Steams shovelware collection.

#LinuxOnly

Zelda II, Metroid, and Super Mario without swords or any weapons, epic music, extra lives, boss battles, life meter, destroyable enemies, cutting edge 8-bit graphics, or magic. What does it add for the things it lacks?

Optionally, it can be experienced in CRT mode. CRT mode is everything bad about playing on old style TVs. Fuzzy moire hexagonal screen pixels, color bleeding, curved screen distortion, invisible overscan and rounded off image corners, motion blur/phosphor burn, reflections on the CRT frame. Even rolling screen, RF interference, and static make an appearance. But it’s nostalgic… I think this might well be the only Linux game that has “action safe” and “title safe” design (google it). CRT mode is also tunable to better match the old TV players used when they had no other choice. Personally, I found CRT mode to be worth 15 seconds of enjoyment, then I switched it off. But, that’s just my personal preference. Turning off CRT mode does not result in ‘modern’ graphics. Without the CRT mode, this game is about gameplay only.

Rating: 9/10

Have you ever replayed one of your treasured childhood 8-bit games, only to be disappointed? It felt so different in your memory… Well, Super Win The Game feels the exact opposite of that. In fact, SWTG is what old childhood games should have been in the first place. Don’t know what I am talking about? Try its freeware prequel “You Have To Win The Game”, that is, if you grew up playing games on an old CGA-monitor. Put it simply, it is PURE AWESOMENESS.

Pros

Level Design: this is probably what most reviewers will overlook, since the best level designs are the ones you don’t even notice. The levels are just so complex and fun to explore, with its different themes and multiple secrets. And speaking of secrets, oh my, you will be served. I literally discover one every single time I load the game.

_**Is it a good Metroidvania?

Perhaps too many questions for an intro?**_

Genre:

-Metroidvania

Fit for me:

-Top 3 fav genre, so great!

Pros:

-I love the monochromatic minimalist aesthetic, it looks awesome. Each biome has a distinct color and each one fits the Digiton World really well. The art design really reminds me of Kunai or Gato Roboto, but I think Enter Digiton’s art design may be better.

-Really well designed cohesive interconnected world that all fits really well. This game gave me some Ato vibes, but I thought that the world building was much better here, and the biomes made more sense. Each biome has a distinct theme, color palette, and unique enemies. No one biome felt too difficult.
