Demons of Asteborg

Demons of Asteborg

Demons of Asteborg promised to be a “Metroidvania” kind of game and it delivers. While it still is pretty linear there’s some exploration in all stages. Also I love how you have to use your new abilities to beat each stage and bosses, giving it new mechanics on all of them. There’s a ton of variety here. This was originally a Mega Drive/Genesis game and this looks and sounds AMAZING, can say without doubt it is one of the best games ever made for the console and glad all people can play it in the og hardware and digital too.

Ok so, I really did like this game, it was really fun hacking your way through demons advancing levels, getting stronger as you go and the overall journey is great….but that ending….that ending was so abrupt, I got to the final level I didn’t even know I was at the final level, and when things just started to get really good, I was fighting the final boss, mind you again, I had no idea I was fighting the final boss…..this guy was a joke it only took me 3 tries to beat this guy, I had a much much much tougher time fighting the previous bosses, and when I finally finished him…..small dialogue and ROLL CREDITS….really? I mean really? (spoiler) you couldn’t put in a few more levels now that I achieved my demon form? come on such wasted potential….

My full S Rank play through here: https://youtu.be/YXQJ0dCfOlM

Game is a 7 out of 10 for me the creator definitely improved on it from naginata your sprite is still thicc compared to the enemies but I don’t believe your noggin in this game has near the girth of the geisha from naginata. I like that he added an upgrade system for your weapon in this one where when you get special move bar filling items your shot upgrades and if you take damage you lose it pretty nice reward for not taking damage. Bat form is so much better than jumping as well it can be irresponsive at times for reasons I couldn’t pinpoint but it’s a DEFINITE imrpovement to jumping in naginata. The special move in this SUCKS terribly compared to naginata. Stage 3 is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo long and one thing that would take this game a long way is instead of focusing on making the game more difficult by making stages longer and adding a greater number of enemies would be adding different mechanics for enemy attacks quality quantity. Another change that would be super beneficial in this game but possibly a lot of work would be some kind of upgrade shop where you can unlock different attacks, special skills, etc. it would add replay value and just make the game a whole lot more entertaining. Definitely glad the creator made improvements though!

Update: So, I was able to play again, and was doing rather well now that I understand what to do and how to do it. It was nice after a certain stage that when I died I could reload and try again from the same point, and not have to completely start over. Unfortunately, the game froze again and the character stopped responding to the controls. This really needs to be fixed because the only thing to do at that point is to close down the game which just makes me not want to play again. So until this issue is fixed, I cannot change my rating. Once that issue is fixed, I will change my rating from “No, I do not recommend,” to, “Yes, I recommend this game.”

Drunken Samurai

Drunken Samurai

Drunken Samurai is another GameMaker Studio asset flip from serial copy+paste infringers, HotFoodGames. All these guys do is rip off game templates and projects from the Yoyogames/GameMaker Studio store and try to scam people into paying for someone else’s work on Steam. They have run asset flip scams dozens of times, and this is no exception. It’s nothing but a cash grab.

This time they’ve ripped off a basic template for a 2D retro pixel platformer/brawler. Asset flips and other “Fake games” (as Valve calls them) are harmful to the industry, because they pollute the marketplace and reduce the visibility and exposure needed by genuine indie developers.

1/10

best part is a wise opponent’s AI, approach to battle and swift weapon switching in different circumstances.

Strange that the first Achievement still wan’t fixed, my guess, this explains that game will be as it is.

a Story of Merchant

a Story of Merchant

a Story of Merchant is an abandoned early access 2D retro pixel platformer that was made by copy+pasting a Unity Asset Store template for making a 2D retro platformer game, then cramming in a bunch of low quality retro pixel 2D “art” (used typically because the developers lack the budget/talent to do any better).

The result, unsurprisingly, is a very poor quality 2D platformer. The controls don’t work properly. It looks bad. The nicest thing I can say about this is that it displays properly in full screen.

Cursed Castilla (Maldita Castilla EX)

Cursed Castilla (Maldita Castilla EX)

Cursed Castilla is an arcade action game which is based and inspired by the Ghosts and Goblins series and other retro titles. It brings an 16 bit graphics style, a quick action packed gameplay with tight controls and a high level of difficulty.

The story is set in the Middle Ages in the Spanish Kingdom. You play as a knight who is sent on a quest -together with other 3 fellow knights- by the King to cleanse the Kingdom from the evading demonic horde. The story basically is a Spanish mythos and there are several parts of the game where creatures from other European mythologies appear. Since the creators are Spanish the game overall in its music and its design has a Spanish vibe.

Really fun, quite challenging, and at times even feel a little unfair retro-style game. However (with the exception of one part), the checkpoint system is very forgiving so it’s rarely frustrating.

You attack using only throwable weapons, where only a certain amount can be out active at a time until they either hit an enemy, an obstacle, or fly off screen. This means that the closer you are to enemies, the faster you can attack, and also that if you spam you can be left defenseless for a brief window. It also has some pretty unique jumping mechanics similar to some other retro platformers wherein you jump much farther if you are holding a direction when you jump, and jump almost straight up if you aren’t holding a direction (however, unlike some games, you can still nudge slightly in either direction while in the air). Additionally, attacking (especially if you are spamming) slows you down substantially. These mechanics mentioned above can make it feel a bit janky until you get used to it, but the game controls great and has highly accurate hitbox (although your entire character is the hitbox which makes dodging obstacles difficult). There are a variety of environments and a massive amount of bosses that for the most part where unique and fun.

Quest of Wizard

Quest of Wizard

This is a really fun game, simple to learn but hard to master. When i watched the trailer I was interested in the graphics and how smooth the movement looked and I wasn’t wrong; the graphics are really sharp and pretty and the movement feels nice after you get used to the fact that the wizard is really floaty.

You have your dash and your main and secondary spells to fight enemies and get coins, and with that money you buy upgrades to your spells and some passive abilities, and what I like about that is that those upgrades are significative, you feel way more powerful just after upgrading one spell and it’s fun to return to already beaten stages to overpower enemies that were harder before.
