MahJong - Medieval Fantasy

MahJong - Medieval Fantasy

For me, it is a nice and casual game, almost feeling like a stress-reliever game. The goal is simple to achieve, and there’s nothing too risky about matching two identical tiles- unless you’re pressured to do it quickly when you have less time. The “Medieval Fantasy” style kinda adds in more detail to the game, especially if someone is an RPG fan or an anime fan. All in to say, it is a simple/casual game anyone who would want to relieve their stress.

Alot of the levels feels very repetitive. The game was fun for the first 2 times i played it but does get boring very fast. should get achievements added to the game.

Angkor: Celebrations

Angkor: Celebrations

A fun variant of the match three genre.

The story is that you are collecting items for some ritual, but it is really only a conceit to give the game a theme. It does that well enough though.

The art is nice much of the time, though the quality varies. I find the music quite pleasant, but you can turn it off if it bugs you.

There are a variety of levels of difficulty to suit your taste. You can give yourself a time deadline or a move deadline depending on your style.

There are a variety of odd things you have to do to move ahead, some common, like ‘match the piece that is locked in place’ or ‘match next to a piece to cause an effect.’ There re also squares you need to match multiple times to finally get it to count as clear.

gems of magic: lost family is supposed to be a match-3 game suitable for kids, yet it has a mandatory move limit, running out fails the level. what were they thinking?

don’t expect much from the narrative, but it’s there, cutscenes and all. basically, you’re a family of fuzzy balls (they remind me of fury of the furries, a classic platformer from 1993), minding your own business, when suddenly your relatives get sucked up by a tornado. a wise bird hands you a bunch of gems, which are supposed to help track them down somehow. what happens is, after every few levels a family member gets rescued.

Inexpensive, and is exactly the game you think it is with a ton of content. Every once in a while the randomization on a level is brutal though.

Halloween Trouble 2

Halloween Trouble 2

This is ok as a basic match 3 game. Unfortunately, it introduces many new game elements after level 9 with absolutely no explanation and no clear way to deduce what they mean, how they work, or how to play them. A simple icon/mechanics glossary page would be a simple solution. Or even a manual, but I know such archaic things as how-to-play documents are now anathema to game designers (or publishers).

I played the first few levels and find it so very boring that I stopped playing and don’t think will do so again later. The only good thing about it is that it doesn’t cost much but still I would have rather saved the money for a game that is more enjoyable.

PuzzleQuest: Challenge of the Warlords

PuzzleQuest: Challenge of the Warlords

Puzzle Quest: Challenge Of The Warlords is an addicting puzzle game with an added roleplaying element. The title was developed by Infinite Interactive and published by Namco Networks America. Anyone who has played Tetris, Bejewelled or any similiar game will be quite familiar with the puzzle portion of this fantastic title but for me, as a heavy R.P.G. fan, it was this part of the game that really makes it stand apart from the others in the genre.

As in the start of a typical roleplaying game you select your character and class before the terrific story sends you traveling across a vast fantasy world in search of quests, battles and loot. I found the story to be extremely compelling and at times humorous. It definitely keeps your attention and makes you want to wander about and converse with any person or beast that would cross your path. The combat, of course, takes place in puzzle format and tasks you with matching pairs of colored gems, skulls and other items while casting spells as well as a variety of other attacks and moves against your opponent. As you battle you earn experience points which you can spend upgrading your skills as well as accquiring gold and loot with which you can better outfit your character. You also have the option to capture opponents and hold them in your dungeon. You can then learn new spells and combat tactics from your prisoners as well as use the captured beasts as mounts as you traverse the world.

Many people say that AI cheats in this game. There already are a lot of reviews describing the game mechanics, so I decided to dwell a bit on this cheating matter.

The PC opponent doesn’t get better random drops than a human player. I’ve spent a lot of time noting all chain reactions leading to the extra turns and tons of damage, and I saw that the chances of you and AI getting the lucky strike are pretty much similar, BUT it might seem that the computer cheats.

Why is that so?

First, we tend to attribute our wins to our skill, and our losses to our bad luck. That’s one funny bias. And it’s not limited to videogames for sure. If we get a good contract or a promotion, it means we’re skilled and we’re great. If someone else gets it, they’re a lucky bastard. Back to the game, when we make our careful measured moves and get good drops, we think, yay, I’m so good at this game! But when AI gets the same good drops, we never think, ooh, my PC is a strong player. No! Cheat! Not fair!

Rescue Quest Gold

Rescue Quest Gold

I haven’t played many match-3 games lately but the art for Rescue Quest Gold caught my eye. It’s bright and colorful, and the game is divided into different areas with their own themes so there’s always something new to look at. It’s pretty challenging unlike Bejeweled but definitely less frustrating than Candy Crush. There are objectives per level to reach the cage, get keys, or defeat enemies. They say the path-based mechanic adds a bit of strategy, but I think it’s pretty straightforward and not overcomplicated. There’s a mix of easy and hard levels so you don’t get bored easily. You also get powerups and spells to use, and it takes some practice to figure out which ones to solve specific levels. The music gets kind of repetitive (if you’re stuck in a level or region for so long) but they are whimsically beautiful if you listen to them out of the game (there’s a bonus content menu). In terms of price, I’d say there’s a lot of replay value to this. I wouldn’t mind starting over again at Level 1 after I finish. This game definitely needs some more love. My only complaint: should have a high score leaderboard! :P

This game was a ton of fun, and the community behind it made it even better. I ended up 100%ing the game and it was definitely satisfying to take my video of “look I did it!” back to the Boomzap family to celebrate. There is enough of a story that it doesn’t feel like a plain match-3 grind, and the types of levels are varied enough that you shouldn’t ever get TOO terribly comfortable with a particular style of level.

The map generation honestly makes the game feel more like a strategy game with elements of procedural generation, since your starting layout of tile colors is going to be different each time and for those 1-tile corridors it’s going to have some clutch RNG moments. It’s not a plain Jane Bejeweled arcade game, but to a certain level you can treat it that way if you prefer. All in all, a really fun time sink.

Puzzle Kingdoms

Puzzle Kingdoms

I hate this game. The campaign option uses some variations on ‘match 3’ games to advance a basic plot (good you versus evil demons), but everything is very unpolished and unclear. For example, your ‘heroes’ get bonuses for 2 colors and penalties for 2 others when assigning points for relics and spells, BUT while the base points and color-bonus/penalty points show on the assignment screen, when you actually make the assignment, a different value is used!

Other gripes:

  • heroes have two colors, but you only get to see one unless you go through a convoluted series of screens.

Developed by Infinite Interactive and published by Strategy First, Puzzle Kingdoms is yet another terrific title from their wonderful puzzle series of games. If you’re a fan of match three, puzzle, roleplaying or any combination of the three then you’ll be pleasantly surprised by Puzzle Kingdoms. The game is very fun, can quickly become quite addictive and provide you with hours of intense gameplay. From what I’ve read on various forums, many people who enjoyed the first title, Puzzle Quest: Challenge Of The Warlords, didn’t really seem to like the sequel Puzzle Quest 2 quite as much because it wasn’t as heavy on the roleplaying elements as the original game was. In that matter, this title seems to be much more like the heavily preferred Puzzle Quest: Challenge Of The Warlords.

It’s a real nice candy crush game with a narrated story and dragon theme :3

There is surely much more story-wise than I’ve expected in such a game, so we get 2 small cutscenes, self contained story about a girl and her dragon friend and all is delivered piece by piece every few levels of candy crushing of mixed difficulty.

Hard to say much about the gameplay as if you played any candy crush or “match-3” you already know what this is. I just want to say that’s a real nice feel to have a full single player experience without typical to mobile counterparts ads, locking behind lives telling you how much you can play or steps to make before you auto lose a level and of course having to hold back with power ups because you get so little…
