Azkend 2: The World Beneath

Azkend 2: The World Beneath

It’s not bad; there are many different power-ups that create some variety and strategy in the typical Match 3 game-play loop, so it’s not an awful chore to play.

Ultimately however, RNG plays far too much of a role in success or failure, and while the main game is eventually beatable (after many tries) the coin challenges eventually become all but impossible. If you’re trying for 100% achievement completion, good luck, because as far as I can tell that’s the only way to attain several of them.

Azkend 2 is a causal match 3 -game. The artwork is top notch and the music is alright.

There is a clumsy attempt at a plot, but in the end this whole “spirit of adventure” thing is just a theme that works well with beautiful images. You don’t get an “engaging storyline”. The woman person just ends up shipwrecked and goes to places that don’t make any sense. And the voice acting is kind of annoying.

The story mode constists of 68 levels. There are some nice special pieces and whatnot, but nothing spectacular. Nothing I wouldn’t have seen before. The gameplay gets a little repetitve at the end and sadly the levels are all quite easy. There’s also a time challenge mode, but after I was done with the storymode I thought there wasn’t much replay value.

I wish this had a tutorial for new players but once you get the hang of it its a good game. Its basically like Tetris but a bit more complicated.

Super Star Path

Super Star Path

An incredibly short sort of color-match puzzle on one hand and a SHMUP on the other. Whenever a boss is reached it’s almost as if the puzzle section never existed because of how much of a reflex-incentive game it suddenly becomes. It’s even mentioned on the Steam store page that it’s short and that it’s “more puzzle than SHMUP”.

There’s more control over the movement with a controller than there is using a keyboard. Can’t rebind the controls but instead they only give you 3 keyboard control schemes and only 2 controller schemes. I’ve got more problems with the 2 controller schemes because all that they use and switch around are (A) and (B) which does “Action” and “Cancel” with “Action” being the “Fire” button when in-game. For a game where you can shoot as fast as you press the button I always figured to put that on the left face button (X) but I don’t even get a choice on that matter.

For those who want a quick review, there’s a tl;dr at the end if you don’t wanna read all this.

Super Star Path is a half-puzzle, half-danmaku bullet hell game. It inverts the traditional bullet hell formula in that the levels themselves are just as hard, if not harder, than the boss fight at the end, but for different reasons. Having said that, there is only one fixed difficulty, and said difficulty feels just right; It’s not so easy that you can’t pay attention, but too hard as to turn players away in frustration. It should be worth noting, however, that I obtained 100% completion in a mere 93 minutes. The rest of my playtime was spent idling the main menu to obtain the trading card drops.

Terminal squad: Sentinel

Terminal squad: Sentinel

A great concept of piloting a mech and fighting an alien horde through match three gameplay. You get a squadron of ‘J’s (every member of your eight woman team has a name that starts with the letter ‘J’) and must battle constantly spawning swarms of aggressive alien critters. I like the concept. The game is simple and puts you into the action right away. You level up, improve and configure each member of your troop independently. Every tenth level you will face an alien boss who will drop a new module which you can slot into your mech giving you either new or improved abilities. As you advance the levels the aliens will not only increase in strength and numbers but also hazards which affect the match three board (such as blocking sections of it).

Good game, freezes sometimes when you run out of moves, but just a simple restart solves that issue.

end of 2019 edit: a new game mode has been added, so I edited the review a bit.

have you ever wondered what it’d be like to play tetris on a seesaw? well, tetris without tetris shapes, but the same general idea of dropping blocks and creating matches. and all this in an 80s neon-inspired setting with fitting music. well, that’s what tiltit offers. that, and a city being built in the background based on your performance, which is a really neat idea.

Jewels of the Mysterious Woodland

Jewels of the Mysterious Woodland

Overall: Eh.

I bought this because I’m struggling to find simple games on Steam that don’t try to incorporate story elements or other types of gameplay.

This game is fine, it’s simple and straightforward. It doesn’t bother trying to shoehorn in some adventure.

Cons:

It’s hard to figure out what everything does, how a level ends, and I didn’t realise it was even timed until the 5th time the game just stopped and told me that I had lost.

Unsatisfying experience.

Bad game design.

Poor controls.

Annoying sound effects.

Many beautiful pictures and meditative music but it doesn’t save the day.

The Legend of Bum-Bo

The Legend of Bum-Bo

Firstly, I do enjoy this game, I received it as a gift from a friend and had an enjoyable time, however, The Legend of Bum-bo was last updated 14 December 2019 and is very unpolished. I hope this game gets updated and its issues are addressed. Note: as of 18/5/2020 the co-creator said this game is being handed off to another team for further work I’m hoping changes occur and then I’ll update this review.

Currently the Legend of Bum-bo feels like an early access game, while it is presented as a finished product. I’m a massive fan of Ed’s other products including Binding of Isaac and it’s dlc’s, and the physical card game (I truly adore the art, asthetic and quotes on the cards). However, buyers should be aware that this product is more flawed and less polished then other Edmund McMillen work’s, and consumers should consider looking at gameplay before purchase to see if it is right for them.

REVIEW UPDATE 20.11.2019

The game received a huge amount of bug fixes and very small QoL addons ( Even doe the sound menu should had been there from the beginning ) and the game started to get more and more enjoyable. It really shows that the devs really care of the game and that they listen to the complains that the community has. Huge Plus!

INITIAL REVIEW 13.20.2019
