Hypatia

Hypatia

Hypatia is a low res PC game for VR rather than just any VR game for PC.

I don’t have the means to access the new VR equipment, or buy a new computer.

That’s why I recommend Hypatia. It lets me do everything I wanted to do with VR without VR.

The bullet board ads are limited. The items aren’t too pricey. The quests can be short. You can buy/own property.

For every quest you complete, you earn Bits. Bits are the second VR currency available to players.

The game for me is a solid 10/10. The only problem I’ve had is that more people aren’t playing. (due to odd controls?)

As one of the developers of this game (who was laid off and can no longer profit from its success) I can honestly say that this game has great potential, and I really hope that the promised free-to-play launch revives it from the ashes. It should have been free-to-play to begin with, because nothing is worse for a social experience than lack of people playing.

I’ve personally experienced the magic of Hypatia’s collaborative play in an environment curated for wonder and joy, and I really hope that many others will get the chance to share this experience first hand. There is a lot of heart and soul embodied in this game, aside from the fact that it’s just plain fun to explore. I played again this weekend on the Windows MR Samsung Odyssey and am pleased to say that it works just as well as on Vive or Occulus.

Okay so this is not really a review of the game. I wanted to do a review but found nobody else online to play against. This is an online multiplayer only game. There are no bots. I think you need 10 people online to start a match. I waited over 20 minutes just a few hour(s) after release of the game on Steam.

Anyland

Anyland

UPDATE November 2018 – I’ve clocked over 1,300 active hours in Anyland. Absolutely the best VR program/game/universe, no competition.

UPDATE January 2017 – I’ve now clocked over 200 active hours in Anyland over the past ~3 months, surpassing all other Steam games' /played. #1 VR program for me indeed.

The devs are still adding features, many from suggestions, every few days.

After teaching a few new players & friends, there is a learning curve to designing well, but it’s easy to get up to speed by just building (practice practice practice) and experimenting. With the friendly community, bouncing ideas off each other & helping solve design problems is fun.

I had always had VR on my mind. Just the thought of being transported into another world was what I always dreamed of. However, when I finally configured all the hardware needed for VR, I was slightly disappointed in what software options I had. ‘Let’s make something that people are used to’ some of the developers agreed. The zombie shooters the space traders the walking simulators the gun simulators, they never really appealed to me. Even the new social hubs offered very little. In a surge of desperation, I frantically scrolled through the endless streams of steam reviews, looking for that hidden gem the one application to shine above the rest. Then from out of nowhere I found it. An application with positive user reviews and a compassionate community. I had found my Anyland. I thought to myself, what have I got to lose and downloaded it. It makes me smile now to believe that I did what most new players in Anyland do when they find their own biscuit in space. I made a few objects a table, a desk lamp, half a wall and a flowerpot and then I closed the app. 3 months later; I don’t know why, I re-opened Anyland and stumbled upon the areas button. What was this ? I hit an interesting nightclub link and then something special happened to me. I was suddenly surrounded by a rich area full of colours and music. For over an hour I danced to myself. Here I was with a nightclub to myself, my face started hurting from my smile pushing against the headset. This is what I wanted. I’m happy to role play this I heard myself saying. It’s funny to look back but I still thought that this was the creation of a crazed developer and my introduction to scripting my first head, a daft punk stylized which was to later haunt me was just part of the fun. However, on my second visit to the nightclub the day after, a whole new world opened up to me. Suddenly one avatar appeared on the dance floor follow by, two then four five six all at once all animated. Closer they curiously looked at me. A double take later and I carried on with my fun, thinking nothing of it. One of the green haired avatars stood next to me and spoke.

This is an interesting app, but needs a lot more features. First and foremost you need to be able to put a password on a room. I thought this would be an interesting experiment for my students, but they are under 18, and I won’t invite them to a completely open room like that just anyone can join.

The instructor needs to have some controls. Like kicking or muting people if necessary. Also it would be nice if there were some basic avatar controls, even male/female and make choosing colors of clothes to help differentiate.

Really good VR experience. Chill place to take a break - even when no one else is there. The lounge set-up is sweet and the music is a vibe. Even better when other people show up, too. Had a good conversation about space travel.

BeanVR—The Social VR APP

Attempted to installed some weird dot net crap on my computer then crash upon startup. Moving on. I have a video of my trying it years back and it seemed like the servers were down, but I swear I got inside once. I’m trying to think of what other VR social app it looks the most like, but it’s really got more of a unity asset flip aesethic than anything an existing vr social network. I guess it looks kinda like Rec Room.

! Maybe the GO version works. Worth a shot. It’s a worthy downvote for a Steamapp, but maybe I’ll give it a bone and drop three stars on the other two stores. https://youtu.be/svjLXyVO65E

At least for now, it feels like a cheap chinese knokoff of rec room. I’m looking forward to see where it’s going to go, but for now, it’s not compelling enough to use it. And this is a problem since for this to work, you need people to stay in there, and want to go back.

its 3am so i apologize if my grammar and or ideas are all over the place.

This game is proof that there is some truth to the saying “Simplicity is the Ally of reliability”. the small file size is testament that all you are getting is bare essentials and yet The game is off to a good start as far as what it has to offer goes which is a very punchy First person in your face action experience. It is worth mentioning that while i am still a stranger to VR i was able to apply my experience as a practicing tactical shooter in this game as far as target acquisition, sight allignment, sight picture and even muscle memory goes. I admit I am still clumsy with the movement of my character and the sensitivity pad is as skittish as a horse so one may find themselves running away involuntarily from time to time but my settings may be the culprit of this issue. I have not yet been baptized in the online multiplayer of the game, that being said the game kicks off with 3 maps providing concealment, cover, elevation for the camping bunch and even themes (HEIST).Those that love “Borderlands” may feel a bit of nostalgia as the maps have that similar cartoony look and flavor with a Minecraft boxy touch .The weapon systems menu is well rounded ranging from sniping to close quarters a Bowie Knife for when one must be surgical and even a few LMGs of the soviet and american variants. I have to once again mention Simplicity and its application on the guns. There was No need for the gun to have its name on the menu for me to know what the Brand and even Model it was thanks to the level of care and detail these guys brought to bear. The ragdoll effect that you cause on your intened target has got to be the most satisfying part of the game. every weapon tries its best to grant you a spectacle when you have pumped a not so happy clown full of lead but none of them does it better than the shotgun. For those times when an explosive is what it takes to get the job done you have a frag grenade in your belt just in case the situation calls for it, but if all you wanna do is toy with your prey a little longer there is a few less lethal options as well such as a flash bang. it should be noted however that it will blind anyone within line of sight with the utmost intensity so do be carefull when using it. if you are a range junky like myself, this game has got you covered. i found myself really enjoying the target practice with every weapon system at different distances with the exception of the sniper rifle(distance was just too close) .And for a minute there i was having to go to google translate to brush up on my Russian. within the range there is a “settings” menu of some sort on one of the walls and the characters are cyrillic and much to my bad luck i couldnt find the “Magic Button” to switch over to English so i was left in the dark for the time being. Clearly the Game is still in its early stages and while some may say that its launch was rather premature and its price tag a bit steep we should consider the following :

Yes, I was lucky enough to get a free evaluation copy. But this is an honest review, honest… It’s like War Dust meets Payday set in a cartoon world. They’ve even recreated a cartoon version of that popular map in Pavlov. Which I know is an old Black Ops map. It’s odd knowing your way around, but it looks so weirdly cartoon. The FPS is terrible on my (MSI GS43 6RE, i7-6700HQ, GTX 1060 6GB DDR5, 16GB RAM 2400mhz, 256GB NVMe M.2) rig at least. The movement is very jerky & nausea inducing. Wall clipping is terrible. The weapon holsters are very glitchy. A few times I holstered weapons & then couldn’t pick them up again. I only fell off the map once in an hours gameplay. There are 2 teams of up to 8. There’s friendly fire, which is a good way to weapon upgrade haha… You can choose which side to play on. The SWAT team or the Terrorists. Then each side has a choice of three characters. One with a shield & pistol. One with an M16 (SWAT) or AK47 (terrorist). Then each has a shotgun character. All carry grenades. Which are simply grip pick up, hold trigger throw, & trigger release. I like that. Don’t over complicate it. There’s auto-reloading & no ‘cocking’, which personally I love. So manual reloading is more immersive, so what? I just want to play the game & shoot shit. So please please don’t change that. There’s 2 hand grip on all weapons except the knife, (I think). There’s online multiplayer & offline single player with NPCs. Aiming is a bit off. I’d love the holosight that is on the M16 in the tutorial, but I never found a game with that as an option. I only played for 1 hour on 2 maps. Despite the awful movement & nausea, I was having so much fun I forgot to really look through the menus. I can’t comment on multiplayer in-game speech, I didn’t get a chance to find other real players. But 8 v 8, with endless respawns (like Pavlov) should prove to be fun to organise attack strategies. You can set a timer on the game length, from 5 mins to half an hour. I love the pace of it. It’s heart pounding like a Pavlov gun game at the poolside. It’s just intense. That is what makes it so much fun. Devs, get it running more smoothly sort the holsters out & you have a winner. Just keep throwing more maps into it. If you could find a way to ensure you can team up with your friends too, that would make it awesome. It’s more an alpha than a beta. Even so, I like playing it. I would definitely recommend it to friends & our VR guild members. If I was the creator of this game I would discount it to £3.99 until 1, the player/multiplayer base was a bit bigger & 2, at least the movement & holster glitches were sorted.

–Updated review from much more in game time–

TL;DR - This game is very fun, try the demo- Its the full game but with a level cap and you cant trade items, other than that, completely unrestricted. You wont be disappointed. (You also get to play with full game players)

This game is without a doubt incredible in concept. One of the few full games designed from the ground up for VR. If you want to get amped for the game, just watch a youtube video on the classes, they are so damn cool. Which is why it sucks all the more that so much of it was executed poorly, or at the very least, coded in an unreliable manner. However even with all the bad, the good outweighs it.

First off lets all address the elephant in the room of how the game looks and it being the “first VR MMORPG”. Yes… the game looks like something you would see on the Wii U and with as far as graphics have come in some MMORPG"s people are expecting better. The truth of the matter is, the developers at Orbus VR have managed to make an incredible world with some unique to VR features that runs fairly smooth. Sure one day a “better MMORPG” may come out in VR since they are the first to really tackle it, however after spending literally over a year of playtime on just one of my characters and just 1 of my 6 world of warcraft accounts, and having spent a decent amount of time in countless other MMORPGs such as Rift, Starwars Galaxies, Everquest, Wildstar, and so many others (both paid, free, and pay to win models)… Orbus VR has managed to still deliver a unique experience I had yet to see until now.

I love this game, I’m a bit of an old timer when it comes to games and I do love first person shooters and I love VR. I have bought almost all of the shooters on the market but for me this one stands out (no pun intended :)) above them all because of its mechanics, they are very easy to master.

I find the game to be super easy to pick up you just point and click to pick up your weapon and ammo and everything else you need, but one of the things I really like is the ability to climb over or onto obstacles, its a very simple mechanic of grab with your left hand and move over or up, in other games of a same nature I have found it quite hard and finicky to master this skill and in the heat of battle it can make a big difference, to me anyway. Now it’s not perfect there are a couple of things I’d like to see changed, like the waiting map before you start the game proper, I would like to weapons added to this stage so as to keep you interested while you wait for the game to start proper, sometimes in game if your adding something from your inventory to your weapon like a sight and you happen to be standing over weapons or other items on the floor you can accidently pick up what ever your standing over, but to be fair to the devs I think they are looking at making some changes in the waiting area and the accidently changing weapons I think is probably my fault lol
