Red Faction

Red Faction

Red Faction 1 (RF1) is a great game, but I’m posting a negative review because the port of the game that Steam sells barely works as it is.

I bet RF1 would run well on Windows 98, ME, or XP, but no one should be using a 32-bit version of Windows anymore, and that has been the case since Windows 7 came out in 2009. You can pretty much take my review of Max Payne and pretend I am talking about RF1, because with RF1, we have another example of Steam being lazy and selling a port that, for the vast majority of users, doesn’t work as it is.

ULTOR CORPORATION NEEDS YOU!

Big scary hydraulic door with a ‘press to open’ button on the wall next to it giving you the willies? Not to worry! The giant overpowered rocket launcher provided in the open confines of most mining stations can safely dismantle the nearest wall and create a you-sized hole to climb through! Just ignore all the potentially flammable gas from the mines by the way. There are only a few thousand people down there – we don’t care about them, and neither should you.

Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered

A Great Game

Red faction Guerrilla is an awesome game which features an amazing destruction mechanic through the Geo-Mod 2.0 engine which allows for the free-form destruction of buildings and other structures. This means that instead of Shooting a rocket at a building or setting an explosive charge and having it play our an explosion animation then showing a pre-set damaged building, it calculates the amount of damage one of the different and unique weapons would cause and destroys that part of the building in a way that reflects that damage. Using the game’s unique physics engine, the structure breaks apart in a spill of debris, falling to the ground all around and even damaging the building itself enough to where the whole building can collapse in on itself altogether. This makes for different types of destruction every time. -Set a charge on all supports holding up a structure and watch it fall down as a whole collapsing in on itself as it hits the ground. - Or shoot rockets at it one wall at a time to really play out and savor the destructive possibilities. The main weapon - a sledge hammer that can break its way through almost anything really gives you a sense of satisfaction over and over again until you’ve destroyed a whole structure one swing at a time. I honestly can’t express the awesomeness and satisfaction from the destruction of every building you decide to destroy (which is a big part of the game).

Welcome back to Mars!

Have you ever wanted a game that lets you destroy ANY building in the world? With most games that say everything is destructible, it’s usually pretty limited or scripted, but here you truly can and you can do it however you want to boot. Whether it’s with a rocket launcher, using C4 explosives, mini black holes, or your sledgehammer, you can demolish it all! There honestly hasn’t been a game like this in recent years that has managed to pull it off to this scale, and even after almost 9 years, it’s still a gorgeous and glorious romp on Mars fighting for the freedom of the people. Since this game has already been out for years, I will mostly focus on the Re-Mars-tered parts (OK I get the joke, but good gawd that just does not roll off the tongue and really sounds dumb) and touch on anything that I feel really needs to be addressed. Let’s return to Mars for another fun adventure full of explosives!

Mars or Die!

Mars or Die!

Guys please fix the (hit boxes / bounds whatever) for the environment or something why do I have to get stuck on every thing my AI buddy gets stuck on everything. I already can not rotate the camera WTH? This is severely aggrevating please tell me this was not the intended user experience. So far that’s been my experience with this game. I tried this because it had controller support but now I don’t know if that it even makes it justifiable purchase I do not recommend at this time.

In A Nutshell

Mars Or Die in an hybrid between tower defense and survival game. Set in a quite distant future, it tells the tale of two unfortunate explorers, sent on Mars instead of the Moon, by their rather comical dictatorial government, and their struggle to survive extreme conditions and hordes of hostile aliens.

At first, only the Campaign mode is available, featuring nine levels of increasing complexity and lenght, with different objectives each. Once completed, it will unlock and Endless mode to test your strategic skills against unlimited and always more powerful alien hordes. In the first few levels you will control your two characters separately, so either the Sargeant or the Scout, but then once reunited, you will have to manage both at the same time, using their unique abilities to overcome obstacles and stay alive.

Red Faction Guerrilla Steam Edition

Red Faction Guerrilla Steam Edition

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a sequel of the underrated first-person shooter Red Faction from 2001, taking place exactly 50 years later after the events of the first game. The original Red Faction had a revolutionary concept - the player could destroy nearly everything - something the developers were sadly not fully able to accomplish. It only had a basic story, but shined in gameplay (in my opinion it was better than Half-Life): we had to battle our way through the ranks of the evil Ultor Corporation that terrorized and experimented on the miners working on Mars, through non-stop combat, including vehicles and the use of environmental destruction.

Steamworks is here, the great tyrant GFWL is dead and gone! A round of applause is in order for Nordic Games for reviving this wonderful game. Now, on with the review.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is an insanely fun game, let’s get that out of the way right now. The open world nature combined with the destructable nature of almost every structure in the game makes for one of the most enjoyable, destructive romps you’ll ever have in a game. While you play through the story mode you’ll have a wealth of options for how to deal with objectives, many of which involve the destruction of key buildings. Perhaps you’d like to get up close and personal with your hammer, maybe you’d rather hop in a truck and send it flying through the side of a building or you might just hail it with rockets from afar, all of which are perfectly viable options.

The Technomancer

The Technomancer

I vacillated at first about buying this game. I’m a novice gamer, just started playing last year, in fact. As a fulltime novelist, I have down-time between books, when I need to rest my brain, and I liked the idea of playing story-driven games for entertainment.

I started out with ALIEN ISOLATION, being a huge fan of the ALIEN saga, and had a blast. I went on to devour DISHONORED and several ASSASSIN CREED installments, then all of the DRAGON AGE games, where I discovered my gaming soul-mate: multi-faceted storylines, coupled with compelling characters, challenging combat situations, and complex moral decisions. I followed DRAGON AGE with all the MASS EFFECT games in a head-exploding row and was enthralled; Bioware has a customer for life in me, if they don’t go down the route they seemed to be headed toward with ANTHEM, sacrificing single-player immersion for multi-player commercial gain, though I understand gaming companies must turn a profit. At a loss after MASS EFFECT, I scoured Steam for other RPG games and stumbled across TECHNOMANCER in my recommendations. The reviews turned me off, but I added it to my wishlist anyway. It wasn’t on sale; based on the meh-to-hate-it reviews, forking out $29.95 seemed a streach for a game that appeared likely to disappoint. Then I decided to buy it anyway, as I tend to enjoy a lot of things others don’t. Plus, as a writer who gets online customer reviews for my novels, I know how people will complain about - well, about everything and anything, so I figured I should determine the merits of the game on my own.

Short: Technomancer = Deus Ex meets Mass Effect. Personally loved it. Primary gripe is the karma system implementation and the need to return to one of the main cities over and over again to complete about 75% of the quests.

Long: Technomancer is a party building RPG, set in a futuristic world of politics and conspiracies. The games general ambiance from the sound track to the protagonist’s special abilities all remind me of the original Deus Ex. Only with Mass Effect 2 quality graphics and travelling/fighting companions. For those who played Mars : War Logs, the game takes place roughly parallel to the events of that game, but from a different perspective.

if your wondering if this game is worth the price, take a moment to read my review and find out.

so this game reminds me of the simple yet outstanding games you can find on Xbox 360, this is a real time strategy with user-controlled unit, simple to learn and fun to play.

best with a controller (Xbox 360 controller i used) and also works with the keyboard.

offline skirmish with lots of maps to chose from.

a short campaign that works like a tutorial.

Surviving Mars

Surviving Mars

A new developer took over in September 2021 and they have trashed the game with bugs; just the base game, I’m not even talking about the disastrous expansion (85% negative reviews!!). 2 months and 4 ‘hot’ fixes later and the game is still so broken that I would prefer a rollback over anything the new developers have done, if only such an option were available.

They have started working on ‘content packs’ now.

I was in the middle of a game, trying for some outstanding achievements when the mandatory updates applied. I would remove this negative review if I had a way to roll back to the previous version.

Abstraction Games is ruining this game. It is my favorite game - even now. Yet, as time progresses, Abstraction keeps introducing more and more bugs into this game - at least for the Linux version. They also seem to just add more features that don’t really contribute to the overall experience.

If Steam would let me roll back to the pre-March 2021 release, I would.

That was surprisingly fun! About 20-25 minutes of gameplay, but this is a teaser for the complete game, so perfectly understandable.

You’re in charge of colony planning, sort-of. There is no narrative, and you have to experiment to find the rules of the different building types. I’m intrigued by the end of Year 21, the last level. The full game is going on my wishlist right now!

Jamestown

Jamestown

First off, if you are interested in this game, I recommend getting Jamestown+ instead. It has two more stages and more ships.

Jamestown is a shmup with its stages primarily designed around co-op gameplay. However, enemy HP does scale so that enemies don’t become sponges if played solo. More about solo gameplay on higher difficulties later.

Jamestown doesn’t provide you with a bomb mechanic. Instead it has a hyper-like mechanic called vaunt. It will greatly increase dealt damage and create a shield which absorbs bullets upon activation. The duration of the vaunt can be increased by collecting the golden items. If it runs out, you’ll gain a significant amount of score, especially after a long vaunt. Cancelling the vaunt manually will provide you with brief invincibility and only provide you with a fraction of the score you’d get otherwise.
