Football, Tactics & Glory

If you’re a fan of football, you’ve probably played your fair share of the Football Manager series and FIFA. This game, FTG, is far superior to both of them. FTG is not a really a Management-simulator, but you do take on a managerial-like role in some aspects; signing/selling players, deciding whose contracts to renew, spending your money earned on upgrading the clubs stadium and facilities etc. But these things are quite straight forward. You’re free to focus on playing the matches themselves. You can quickly move on from on match to the next, which is what you will want to do.

I’ve been in love with football management sims since the days of One-Nil . That’s 1992, my friends.

I’ve never enjoyed one as much as this one.

This game is simple enough to play that you can jump right in and start playing. And if you want a casual experience, you can play this game like that. Don’t think too much about your decisions, just pick what feels right. You can do that and have fun.

Or, if you want a more analytical experience, you can take your time over each decision.

Until the Last Plane

Until the Last Plane

Until the last plane is a squadron management game (more than the airfield itself actually), in which you assign pilots to missions, and order resources (and new crafts) to keep your squadron operational through a few short campaigns (each side has 3 campaigns of 4-7 days of operations. Each days consisting of 2-3 sorties).

Each mission is played using different mini games. The core one is the dogfighting mini-game: you choose the maneuver for your plane while the opponent chooses his, and once both planes are out of maneuver, the attacker will destroy its target if it is within its firing cone.

Until the Last Plane is a casual minigame-game about running an airfield in ww2. Alongside the minigames you have an overall management phase where you do airplane maintenance, start the missions, and balance resources to keep everything operational.

The minigames are simple, but every campaign has special missions that change things up enough to keep things interesting. Sadly, many of the minigames are too simple or otherwise flawed- The opponent/AI in dogfighting seems to have only two pre-set scripts it follows and if you’ve found the solution to those you will always win. On the other hand, you will be hit by unavoidable damage that can lead to your pilots dying(On their second damage that mission) just from trying the bombing minigame, making the minigames very simple things you just get through rather than anything you need to think about.

With its worldwide infamy, the Japanese Yakuza is one of the most recognizable institutions in the history of organized crime. But it is much more than that as well. As a strategy/management game, Yakuza Empire offers you the opportunity of virtually experiencing what it’s like to dedicate your life, often quite literally, to its cause.

Lead the feared clan as its undisputed oyabun and direct its operations to the best of your abilities. Your revered predecessor was brutally murdered – it’s time to restore his honor and spill blood in the name of revenge.

Yakuza would be nothing without its ruthless leadership, but the same can be said of its unwavering foot soldiers. Recruit and train the members of your organization. Make sure you have the best and most fitting specialists for whichever operation you’re planning. In a game as dangerous as this, the team is only as strong as its weakest link…

Correct facilities will be indispensable in achieving your goals – they will provide fro you and fulfil various needs. Make sure you invest wisely, however. Money doesn’t grow on trees, and you don’t want to end up owing a debt to the wrong people. Plan ahead – expanding will always be necessary, but make sure you don’t bite off more than you can chew in your managerial ambitions.

Master the streets, know them like the back of your hand, as they will be a second home to you. A harsh one, nonetheless, where survival will be an art in itself. You’ll be given the opportunity to tactically plan out your moves in turn-based combat, so don’t fail – blood flows amply in the streets of Yakuza. Make sure it isn’t yours.

What good is being a member of Japan’s most feared criminal gang if there are no benefits to reap from it? Be devious, for you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. As you enjoy the perks of your hard-earned accomplishments yourself, remain aware of how much you can influence others with luxuries.

Back Alley Inn

Back Alley Inn

Would definately call this a game with a lot of fun ideas mixed into it. The tutorial is both relaxed and not information overload, and even if you accidentally skip a tutorial, you can probably work out whats going on (hint: dont skip the adventure one like I accidentally did!). Developer is currently responsive and it seems will be making changes so even though the game is pretty solid, with a few small non-gameplay breaking quirks, I anticipate very good things for this game soon.

Real player with 22.8 hrs in game

The game is buggy and missing tooltips. The gameplay is extremely RNG heavy and unbalanced making the game unplayable without giving you a clue what you might be doing wrong or how to fix it.

The game appears to give you a massive amount of space to build in but the vast majority of that space actually can’t be built on.

  1. First of all, the energy system is very annoying. You have to wait for energy for everything and the fast forward doesn’t work. This makes trying to figure out the extremely poorly documented features an exercise in frustration because the buildings aren’t expensive but require energy which discourages exploration.

GhostControl Inc.

GhostControl Inc.

This review need updating. The game has been updated and polished even further. Will update when I get around to playing it again.

In short:

Ghostcontrol Inc. is a solid and fun turn-based strategy ghost hunting simulator with very good humor.

Ghostcontrol Inc. style and feel is that of a casual and fun game (but not easy :) ). The graphical style, sounds and music are similar to Theme Hospital. Gameplay is sufficiently deep for a turn based game and incorporates a simple 2 AP system which makes the game flow nicely. Menus and action are understandable and there is enough amount of micromanaging to have variety. The story of the game is humorous and well written.

Real player with 40.5 hrs in game

Ghost Control Inc seemingly has everything going for it. It’s a game where you essentially play team manager for Ghosbusters! And it has a nearly-perfect blend of tactics and management gameplay! What could possibly be more fun?

Unfortunately, the game is marred by several issues.

Firstly, the art direction is uneven at best. Most of the ghosts have very uninspired designs that won’t stick in your mind like those of other franchises involving catching ghosts. Several of the ghosts are just recolors or slight redesigns of the lower level ghosts you fight early in the game, so they’re both boring to look at and repetitive. This also makes it slightly harder to tell what you’re figthing at times.

Mortal Glory

Mortal Glory

Mortal Glory is a fantastically fun little game where you manage a team of gladiators in a fantasy setting, competing to achieve the glory of victory and appease the Emperor and masses alike. The gameplay follows a simple but addicting structure:

  1. Hiring gladiators

  2. Equip/upgrade your team with items, skills, and training

  3. Go forth into glorious battle

  4. Encounter a random town event which may aid or debilitate you for the following match

Within this structure, the player focuses on economic/team management and battle strategy used in other turn-based tactics games. A lot of the fun comes from making decisions about who to hire and what to buy with your limited resources. Perhaps you focus on beefing up one gladiator that can take on multiple foes and then save money to hire stronger allies. Maybe you are able to buy a fantastic item that offsets a cheap gladiator’s weaknesses. Before entering the arena, you can also see the stats of the foe you’re about to face, so you can plan accordingly. As your team develops, you may have different members specialize into classic roles, (tank, mage, etc.) or create hybrids to deal with multiple situations.

Real player with 94.1 hrs in game

Mortal Glory has meaningful tactics with a gentle learning curve. What it lacks is tedium. These fights go fast, and when you’re not caving in skulls, you’ve got a bit of light shopping to set yourself up for success. No deep intricacies here. Just kill and keep moving.

If you find Mortal Glory too easy, you can make use of its challenge toggles along with the additional Glory ranks (think Slay the Spire Ascension). Alternatively, there’s a Relaxed difficulty for an easier time, though I don’t know how easy that actually is. Tactical vets should have no trouble starting with Normal after a gander at the small tutorial.

Xenonauts 2

Xenonauts 2

XENONAUTS-2 is a vast single player strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending our planet from alien invasion.

Battle the extraterrestrials in tense, complex turn-based combat across a variety of maps and missions, recovering and researching their technology to unlock new weapons and equipment!

Take a global view with the real-time strategic management layer: you must establish and develop your bases, conduct research, battle for air supremacy and try to keep the panic level in your funding regions under control.

The strategic and tactical layers of the game are directly related, with ground missions affecting the overall balance of the Geoscape and your research efforts on the recovered items unlocking new equipment for your squads and aircraft. Every management decision you make filters down to the troops you control in battle; every shot you fire could change the balance of strategic power.

Can you hold off the invasion long enough to discover a way to defeat the alien forces?

No knowledge of the previous game is required to play - XENONAUTS-2 is a standalone title with its own setting and narrative.

Key Features

  • Ground Combat: The highly-detailed turn-based combat system gives you fine control over your soldiers as they battle the aliens across multiple different mission types and numerous varied environments. The day / night cycle and destructible battlefields open up endless tactical possibilities to defeat your enemies, and your soldiers will grow stronger as they gain combat experience - provided you can keep them alive!

  • Strategic Management: A complex strategic layer allows you to coordinate the defence of our planet. Establish bases to extend your reach and use customisable interceptors to shoot down attacking UFOs, then deploy your soldiers to secure resources. Capturing crash sites can secure alien technology and live specimens for research, whereas protecting regions from alien activity and terror attacks will protect your funding and prevent them surrendering to the aliens.

  • In-depth Simulation: The structure of Xenonauts-2 is not linear; no two campaigns unfold in exactly the same way. Every element of this complex interlocking simulation has been designed to create maximum coherence between the strategic and tactical layers: small decisions can have an impact across the entire game.
