It’s Democracy meets Civilization.

Still a work-in-progress, and from a part-time indie dev, but what you see here shows promise.

If you’re a Civ/Paradox/Democracy fan, it’s an easy recommendation.

If you’re not too sure about it, grab it on sale, or wait until they finish all the ages that make the core gameplay.

Pros:

  • Less intimidating upfront than Democracy, you start from humble begginings.

  • You can start at any place in the globe

  • Many different paths to take your civilization through

This game is unique. Maybe not much replayability, but there definitely is some. In the bronze age I had a shining civilization, the entire Iron Age was a time of unparalleled ascension, but I quickly over expanded and then the disruption caused by the immense amount of minorities quickly destroyed my stability. I kept undermining the power of the clergy in order to stop them from toppling my republic, which caused the number of heathens and heretics to rise to such a point as to ruin my stability even further. There was this entire collapse scenario very reminiscent of the fall of the Roman Republic, culminating in a coup d’etat by the military which led to a quickly fragmenting military dictatorship that saw a snowball of decline that just kept rolling and rolling.

Railroad Tycoon 3

Railroad Tycoon 3

Ah Railroad Tycoon 3, my childhood. Before I go any further, the game WILL work on Vista and Windows 7. Go to http://hawkdawg.com/ to find patches for blurry textures and the Vista fix.

Railroad Tycoon 3 is the third installment of the Railroad Tycoon series. Developed by PopTop Software and The Gathering of Developers, Railroad Tycoon 3 introduces the 3D engine to the Railroad Tycoon series. Railroad Tycoon 3 has three main game modes. Campaign, Sandbox, and Scenarios. If you want to play a challenging campaign mode, you have it, or if you just want to go and lay some track, you can do that too. In campaign mode, there are three difficulties; Easy, Medium, and Hard. You can choose between 25 different games to choose from, and can go from left to right, or start at the hardest one. In scenario mode, you play against a computer player on a selected map, and race to be the highest company to win. In sandbox mode, you pick a map and time period, and then go have fun!

The game gets a thumbs up. Classic and tons of fun.

Edit: It does seem to crash very frequently, however. I guess that’s what you get with a game as old as this one.

Cannot, however, give a thumbs up to Steam support on this one. As many others have said, you will most likely find that it crashes within seconds of launching the app. This is because of a default setting that conflicts with just about every modern video card. You won’t be able to get into the settings menu to fix this, crashes too quckly. If you run into this problem, you will have to go to a third party site and download an updated config file, replace the original, and then the game will function. The file is safe, the people who created this have my gratitude, but customers SHOULD NOT have to be subjected to downloading a file from a third party site in order to use a product they’ve been charged for. Upon contacting Steam support, they offered no assistance with this matter. I asked for a refund, was denied (i was outside of the timeframe so that was expected), but I also received no attempt from support to get the game running. The last part should not have happened, no excuse for that. At that point, I finally went ahead and downloaded the file (I was not comfortable doing this). Glad to say it worked :)

Computer Tycoon

Computer Tycoon

This is the first review I’ve ever written, even though I have nearly 100 games in my library, so that should tell you something just there. Computer Tycoon is easily one of the greatest tycoon games I have ever tried, right up there with Game Dev Tycoon and Automation (might’ve got the name wrong). It is addictive, and my first 10 minutes of playing it turned into hours upon hours of doing so. For sure worth the price! You get a WHOLE lot of gameplay, and I haven’t even tried hard mode yet. Everything is nearly completely customizable and it is just overall amazing. Some aspects could use some work, though, such as a slow lategame. When you get near 2010, and really 2000s in general, the game really takes a hit. Demand is FAR more than you could ever produce (I mean, you could, but repeating the same process of buying sites, upgrading factories, upgrading recreation, repeat, gets REALLY boring and almost made me stop playing), research gets really slow as in you don’t really have anything to research lategame. For me, it just ran out for a while. Which REALLY made the research department useless, so that is a definite con. Competitors seem to research everything much quicker, and receive an unfair advantage even though you have the best computer on the market PLUS its cheap, and yet they still have the entire world in their color. If there was a way to mass-buy land or mass-produce sites, or to add more factory upgrades, it would make things much better. Again, competitors obviously don’t face this issue and complete everything instantly. At least, that is how it is currently working for me.

After playing it for hours and as a tycoon-games fan, I think this review would be usefull for both the players and the developer(s).

A good, well-balanced Computer Business tycoon game. It’s main focus is computer parts and models, rather than Sims-style city building, which is what many Comp-tycoon players look for.

There are several pros and cons of this game and it is still in alpha-stage; which I hope will result in a batter, near flawless game.

Pros: Vast range of computer parts from memory units to mother boards. Rather than popping computer products, in this game you built your own computer to sell on the market. That way, there are endless possibilities from selling high-end computers to Celeron-type low-end ones; and maintaining classic Home Computer series. During the game, you’d have many available components to choose from. I named my graphic cards as Burnout 100, 109, 330 etc. Quite fun.

A-Train PC Classic / みんなのA列車で行こうPC

A-Train PC Classic / みんなのA列車で行こうPC

A-Train PC Classic is a real estate development game, disguised as a train game. Yes, you manage trains, but the real strategy is in buying up land, making it valuable, and building condos and offices on top of it to make money. The job of your transit network is to stimulate demand, not to actually turn a profit. Instead, you’ll be buying up all the land in some sleepy suburb, running a train to it, and then selling the land for double the price you bought it. Better yet, you can skip the middleman and do the construction yourself, and be the sole owner of an entire city worth of apartments and movie theaters.

What a wonderful game. Honestly. It’s worth the money for sure.

If you’re a fan of OpenTTD (or similar), but felt like the money management aspect was too simple, and/or the game was too shallow, then this game is for you.

You can make long- or short-term investments into stocks of other companies for extra cash or losses (and others can invest into your company).

You can personally transform a tiny town into a striving metropolis by connecting it to your network and regularly servicing it with a passenger train, then constructing some small residential towers or commercial buildings that will also be an extra source of income.

Sid Meier’s Railroads!

Sid Meier’s Railroads!

Sid Meier’s Railroad Tycoon was the third game I ever purchased back in the 1800’s, no, I’m kidding (Though it feels like it at times.) I actually purchased it in 1990 not long after acquiring my first desktop PC. I have played the series religiously since. I have roughly 100 hours in this game in the original 2006 disc retail box version. It certainly isn’t a successor to the venerable Railroad Tycoon III, but it’s still quite enjoyable if you realize this going in. The game is more of a “beer & pretzels” type real time strategy game with an emphasis on attracting more casual type gamers. The game has a charming art style more akin to an HO or N scale model train layout than the ostensible real world look of the previous Railroad Tycoon games.

I’m big on train games. I’m also not the most educated on the finer details of signalling and routing, and find the concepts confusing. I enjoy the business aspects of railroad games more, and like games that let me focus on that.

Sid Meier’s Railroads does just that. It is a very approachable, enjoyable take on the transportation tycoon genre. Block signalling is automatically done for your tracks, and is easy to understand. You get to focus on the fundamentals: what industries have goods? What industries need goods? How can I get from A to B profitably? That is what the game gets fantastically well.

Updated July 9, 2019

I have now played the campaign through twice and have learned a lot since the below review.

The game remains fun and I really cannot wait for the coming updates, because this game has a lot of promise. Some of the problems I had at first have been eliminated by getting better at the game the way it is now.

-Track laying- the first time through I was doing was overloading the network with too many trains and a lot of crossovers and intersections. The routing does need to be improved but with careful planning, future bottlenecks can be eliminated. Upgrade your stations and invest in train research ASAP. This will allow longer and faster trains, that takes care of the problem of clogging the network with slow and over worked trains. Also build sidings frequently so trains can bypass each other easily.

See those cool videos ? They aren’t in the game. The general overhead view is what you will be seeing. I expected to be able to zoom in and move the camera to see cool things like in the videos (coal beingg loaded, trains going over bridges all like they show in the videos) Unfortunately that isn’t what you get to see, it may be clips you see in some later mission of the video (that I haven’t gotten to yet).

Overall, though, the game is a good financial strategy management game. I do miss the old days of RRT and 2 where you lay each small section of track individually, looking at the cost and elevations and having to decide if it was worth it in the long run to go through, over or around a mountain etc. But, strategically the game is definately a breath of fresh air for those that enjoy doing research, buying industries and managing trains and growing cities whose demands change over time.. I do kinda wish there was a log of how each city is changing as it pops up and is gone what the city is no longer needing or is now needing (it seems the game has been kinda “dumbed down” for those that don’t really want to immerse themselves in the grand strategy of it all).

Another Brick in The Mall

Another Brick in The Mall

I’ve played numerous management games, and I figured I’d list down the stuff that I think needs improvement in the game because, hey, I definitely love it.

I’ll be adding more to the list as I log in more hours in the game.

More business types - Arcade, Spa, Events Venue, Staff Room, PC (Console) Cafe, etc.

Staff Management System - The map is huge, and growing the business means a larger staff. It’s hard to keep track of all the employees individually, especially their shifts. I’d also like to see some sort of “staff training”, so I could retain old employees instead of replacing them with other people who have better skills. Retaining the old ones and simply training them in what they lack is much better a way to handle employee productivity than simply replacing them.

Come in here, dear boy, have a cigar,

You’re gonna go far, if you got to make a mall

Since the game is a pun of Floyd, i take it one step furhter

Unless you don’t do it right but the Pink Floyd opening was a must considering the name of the game and the achievements, get off your Strat though and realize this ain’t a The Wall fantasy but rather a tycoon game where you build up a mall or a store or a chain of stores or something in between, it’s up to you. It’s still in early access but unlike a lot of other EA games it already features a lot of options like sandbox with settings for how much money you have, if events happen, if shoplifting is a thing, if your staff needs to eat, piss, eat, repeat, if evemts like the start of school, halloween, christmal happen and how much your margin should be for goods. Next to the Sandbox you have Scenarios where you need to fix up fucked up malls, it’s run of the mill scenarios but they add a challenged.

Business Magnate

Business Magnate

🟩Pros

+Deep and rich gameplay

+Multiple types of companies to play

+AI competition

+Smooth performance; No game-breaking bugs or crashes

🟥Cons

-Heavy micromanagement

-Only one UI element/window can be opened at a time

-Unintuitive controls

-Map too small/restrictive

🎮Gameplay Analysis

🕴️Like Musk

If I have to describe Business Magnate in the shortest way possible it would be “Elon Musk Tycoon Simulator 2019”. As opposed to other games where the focus is on just one field of business(like Farming, Railroads, Truck, Software), this one can have you playing multiple types of companies, just like a true Business Magnate.

I wanted to write a review for this game solely because when I bought it, the title was listed as “mixed” reviews. This game does not deserve that rating. I would say 85% of the issues listed seemed to have been resolved by the developer. The game runs fine, plays fine. There is only one bug I really found which unfortunately is a big one when the traffic jams and then the game is basically over, there doesn’t appear to be a way to resolve it. But literally that was the only bug I found.

The game is very clicky. There are many many lists and tabs to sort through to do things. Information could really be better presented and condensed. But this is not the end of the world, you can still get by. Having a piece of paper to write things down is not ideal, but it helps as you transition from menu to menu and try to get everything you need accomplished.

Solar Baron

Solar Baron

Solar Baron is a real-time tycoon resource management and logistics game. The game is set in a seamless, randomly-generated solar system with a range of resources to gather, pump and mine for maximum profit.

The world faces a resource shortage. In desperation, the world government has privatized the under-performing global space agency in the hope that profit-driven individuals will find a way to tap the vast amount of resources available on other worlds and deliver them back home.

You are one such profit-driven individual.

LIFE-SIZED SOLAR SYSTEM

Solar Baron features a vast, life-sized solar system of procedurally generated planets and moons. You’ll need to solve the logistical challenges associated with transporting tons of valuable resources across billions of kilometers of space by constructing a network of strategically-placed orbital and surface depots.

SPACECRAFT AND SPACEPORT DESIGN

Research new technologies and design spacecraft capable of carrying out specific missions. With a range of available engines, fuel types, and other components, you will be challenged with designing spacecraft that strike a balance between maintenance requirements, production time, mass and – of course – cost.

Design spaceports from a range of modules to serve as fuel depots, research stations, tourist destinations or any combination of these. Just remember that each module must be launched into orbit, so design with caution.

ORBITAL MECHANICS AND MISSION PLANNING

Solar Baron simulates realistic orbital mechanics as well as real-world orbital maneuvers. However, you don’t need to figure out the gritty details yourself – you pay people to do that for you. The game features a streamlined mission design system, which will calculate every detail of a spacecraft’s mission from a list of actions to perform created by the player. This leaves you to do more important things: creating a strategy, setting goals, planning missions and watching the bottom line.

I’ve never played these tycoon/ management games, not even as a kid so when looking for something new to play I came across this and I have to say I’m very impressed, not disappointed in the slightest.

Ever wanted to know what it’s like to run your own business? Well here’s a chance. Start-up Company is a business simulation game that’s is published and developed by Hovgaard Games, the first game they have ever made I believe. In Start-up Company you are the CEO of a brand-new company and your role is to manage the company as well as build up your website and compete against other companies.

THIS IS NOT A MANAGEMENT OR SIMULATION GAME AT ALL!!!!!!

I will preface my now negative review by saying if you enjoy a more casual experience or fancy an advanced take on the “clicker game” concept then by all means have at it. I am not going to say the game is bad because what it does it is fine, but it is misrepresented and being sold as something it is not and the tags it comes under are no longer true.

As of 30/10/2018 I have been booted from the Discord community during a conversation where I had been ASKED what my issues were and was having a convo with another member, the dev (Jonas) saw this as me “bashing his game” which considering HE is the one who chose to change the direction he originally sold it as is NOT my problem.
