This game is sadly not in a working condition yet.

  • Mouse Cursor doesn’t go away ingame

  • No customization options whatsoever

  • Getting stuck during tutorial and can’t progress

That’s pretty much it.

But keep working on it developers, your project has potential!

I admire every indie developer for their work and you have put too

much effort into the game to give it up now!

Wardens

Wardens

After having played this game extensively since I acquired it, I am posting this review in the hopes of addressing the points made in the negative review above, as the reviewer clearly does not understand the purpose of this game. This is going to be somewhat lengthy, will try to summarize at the top.

TLDR; Pro’s and con’s below. If you came here expecting standalone chess look elsewhere, if you are interested in a sandbox experience where you can create your own units read on.

First and foremost I would like to point out something that I believe is the reason for said reviewers negative perception of this game, and that is that Wardens is NOT chess. If you go into Wardens expecting standalone chess, you will be disappointed. At present the only resemblance this game has to chess is the movement and arrangement of the pieces (for now), and that it is played on a chess board. However, despite one of the default game types being Capture the King, Wardens lacks practically all other basic chess rules, such as en passante, castling, and most importantly, check. As your goal in the aforementioned game mode is to KILL the king, not checkmate him. This was done so as to introduce the concept of the abilities in a familiar way without overwhelming the player. As for the abilities being boring, I admit that I myself do not care for the starting decks. That is because those decks are more useful as templates, to showcase possible abilities and help you to make your own. So the abilities are only as boring as you make them. Granted the amount of things you can do at the moment is a bit limited, but there is a surprising amount of versatility with what is already there. With the tools currently available, I have created over 4 pages worth of cards, with varied abilities including, but not limited to, things such as a unit that when they have sufficient mana they and surrounding allies cannot be frozen, a unit that has an ability that grants permanent attack immunity until next overtake (akin to stealth), and a unit that allows allies to cast their abilities for free provided they have sufficient mana for said ability, although this requires (for now) compatibility to be integrated into the other units in order to work, as does my most recent unit, which will allow nearby allies to cast their abilities for 3 mana less. The list goes on, and it will only improve with time as more things become available.

As a chess player, this looked interesting, but I can’t recommend it. It’s basically just chess, but the pieces have boring abilities, their movement is unchanged. Board readability is terrible, all the pieces (both yours and your opponent’s) look too similar and so everything blends together until you can’t figure out what is happening anymore. There’s no tutorial, and the AI you can play against is terrible, if you’re decent at chess you will easily crush it.

Review:

Cool Game the music is great, graphics are pretty cool and unique had like the n64 3d feel with some really nice character portraits and it has a nice overarching story throughout. My main complaint is the VINE THOUGH the vine is the DEVIL 100% in some areas it will give you the hardest time using it (Getting the back pack in the cave OMG! painful). The side quests really aren’t worth doing either they’re a pain in the butt and you only get like two lines of dialogue for doing them. I liked the jimmy buffet cameo too that was nice. Overall a pretty solid game would have been 100x more enjoyable if the vine worked consistently though a lot of the time he’ll start climbing it then hop off. I did have luck with it in the forest and snow area (Thank god!), but everywhere else it was insanely hit or miss. Also my Navi for whatever reason wouldn’t go to the nearest thing I had to collect usually it would get dead set on going to the furthest or the most difficult to grab so once you got to the most difficult place you would have to back track to find the other pieces if you didn’t get lucky enough finding them on your own. The Potions can also take a toxic amount of time to respawn I know the reason for the slow respawn is so you can’t cheese some of the puzzles, but it really is too looooooong. There’s also some fool in a green robe in the forest standing on a bridge who won’t talk to me and has constructed the most invincible invisible wall that on the tree house bridges not sure what he’s doing there besides being a jerk since he won’t talk to me.

shame it didn’t work out, game is better than a lot of junk out there. shame you couldn’t have kept working on it. Good luck iun the future.

Grim Seventh I just heard went free to play. Having tried it now I have to say its a decent hack and slash, its nothing amazing or groundbreaking but gameplay is there and the art style is unique. Average free release but I like it enough to recommend it to anyone looking for a free indie hack and slash game.

Lichdom: Battlemage

Lichdom: Battlemage

I admire this concept. I was excited by it when I first read the description of Lichdom somewhere on the Internet. World certainly lacked a game where you could really feel like a mage, casting endless spells and wreaking mayhem around yourself.

You even feel wrong while playing it, because until now, in any other game, this kind of gameplay has only been available through cheating. You are basically immortal (in case of “death” you actually just despawn and spawn back at the nearest checkpoint), you have an abyss of magical energy that never exhausts, and you can just keep throwing orbs of fire at your enemy until it dies. Overall, it’s all you could only dream of if you ever chose to be a mage in an RPG. Do you remember how you had to sleep in order to restore your mana after killing every_single_enemy in Morrowind? Feels like nightmare now.

Gameplay / combat

Lichdom: Battlemage is an action RPG where you control a single character from a first person perspective. You are a badass mage on a personal revenge quest and you’ve got a wide range of spells to choose from.

You’ve got traditional fireballs and AoEs as well as grenade like “lobs” and “rays” that are short range constant beams. You don’t have any melee weapons but you can block, and if timed correctly, this will trigger a “nova” which damages everything in a radius around you. There’s also a very useful dodge move. There is no mana limit or cooldowns so you can cast as frequently as you desire.

This game straddles the line between game and simulator, and it might leave people looking for either one disappointed. I, however, love this game, so I want to talk about it a bit.

The gameplay almost exclusively involves making choices from a mostly-random selection. You draw from a deck or speak to a faction, and then you choose the option that seems to serve your needs best. You have a limited time to make these choices because the Lord of Evil makes you move along almost as soon as you get rolling. The overall idea is to emerge from the storm of randomness with a healthy selection of graduates who buff your stats for the rest of the campaign. Ultimately, you run out of places to hide, so you have to find a way to survive the final level.

Charming if a bit clunky Hogwarts Sim Tower, card-draw based room choices. Can generate different mana as resources, which allow you to draw more cards of that mana type.

The mechanics are enjoyable, and the game is a great calm, casual experience. The campaign could use a lot of adjustment, it can feel a bit arbitrary and the only real direction is either provided through trial and error or community written walk-throughs. There isn’t particularly a feeling of progressing difficulty or even a real link between the areas as you progress. Challenge cards (You can optionally set a challenge at the start of the campaign, and completing it will unlock the card for future runs) are a cool way to provide goals, but they feel like a side piece rather than a main progressing thread. Some functionality/depth seems underwhelming on it’s impact on the game. Cool ideas, but they don’t actually end up doing a lot for you if you spend time manage them (ex. get 3-5 school “houses”, set priority to different types of magic for the house, drop the people gifted in those types in those houses, stop thinking about houses. There’s rarely a benefit to tweaking house settings beyond the initial setup).

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2

A charming, hilarious and fun adventure with the perfect balance of puzzle difficulty. This point and click has my favourite puzzle design because they are not too hard to figure out, but also not too easy. The characters are unique, interesting and lively, and the graphics are gorgeous without putting too much strain on a computer (as a laptop gamer, I especially appreciate this as there is nothing sadder to me than a game I really want to play with specs that my computer can just about manage with lags). As in the first game, Wilbur is an absolute treasure, Ivo is as great a female character as ever and Critter is quirky, sweet and loyal. Nate has grown more likable in this game as well as gained a fair amount of depth and development.

If you played ‘The Book of Unwritten Tales (1)" you will probably enjoy this sequel. It brings back all the main characters from the first game and introduces a few new ones.

The textures and rigging are a little better than the first and the mechanics and walk paths are a little smoother but I still found that some of the walk paths (especially when you are switching between characters) are a little weird. You don’t have to do any pixel hunting because you can highlight all items that you can interact with so it’s hard to miss something. Some of the puzzles are not very logical to solve but most of them are reasonable.
