CTHON

CTHON

CTHON is weird game. Built around the technical limitations of Wolfenstein 3D era (90 degree walls, no height variations) and set in a dark sci-fi world it blends the first-person combat with upgrades and randomness. You choose one of three character classes and embark on a journey into a procedurally generated labyrith spanning across nine levels divided into three different themes with random pickups and encounters. You have three weapons at your disposal, all of which can be upgraded with mods that not only increase their effectiveness but also change their appearance. Your character can also make use of upgrades that boost your health, armor, ammo capacity, movement speed and so on. You can swap and change your build as much as you want but you’re restricted by two things: inventory space (that determines how many items you can keep at once) and power capacity (each upgrade requires power to be activated). Finally, during your adventures you might encounter machines that let you buy, sell or salvage items as well as upgrade your inventory and power output with Nanites that serve as a currency.

At first glance, CTHON appears to be a clone of early first-person shooters, like Wolfenstein 3D. And if you go into the game expecting that kind of blazing-fast, silly action, you’ll be disappointed.

Instead, CTHON almost feels like a heavily simplified System Shock. The slower pace, the gloomy, claustrophobic hallways, and a deliciously spooky soundtrack (seriously, these are really creepy tunes) all conspire to create the kind of tension-fraught, horror-FPS atmosphere that I’ve longed to experience again since the mid-2000’s. As it’s a roguelite, death is permanent (though you can save your game and come back later, thankfully), and all the maps have randomized layouts, meaning that you never fully know what fresh nightmares are hiding in the dark around every corner.

Score: 7.5 / 10

Price/Value: FULL

A retro Lovecraft themed FPS that I was really glad to see got a demo in the last Steam Next Fest - one of my favourites - and the main product is more of that eldritch goodness.

You play a priest coming to an Innsmouth style town looking for answers and packing some serious faith lead. You will have access to upgradeable weapons in the form of a:

  • Knife (bread and butter weapon)

tl;dr, good game at present, can be a great game with some improvements - solid 7/10 currently. I really liked it and I’m looking forward to more.

Detailed pros, neutrals & cons below, but includes some spoilers as to content.

Pros

  • Game controls very well. Character is fast and fluid, which suits the backpedal/strafe style required.

  • Gunplay is excellent, guns have good feedback and they feel effective.

  • Graphics are excellent. Enemy design is unique and enemy telegraphing is fairly clear. Level aesthetics are varied.

600Seconds ~The Deep Church~

600Seconds ~The Deep Church~

More than any other, I think the word “odd” describes 600Seconds the best. More compelling than the sum of its parts, 600Seconds combines exploration with a fairly short and straightforward third person shooter adventure through a church. Exploring the empty church in the waking world for items for ten minutes before your siege in the nightmare seemed, at first, an unnecessary and kind of obnoxious feature (ten minutes is a long time!) though it does help set a certain kind of mood, but after dying in the nightmare once or twice the interest was made more clear to me.

First and foremost, I think it’s best to remember that this is StudioGekko’s first title. So know going in that it’s not very complex, not very long, and may be prone to jankyness. All that in mind, I still had plenty of fun with the game.

Item placements are not random, so learning the layout of the church and location of everything was really fun. I like that there’s no text or story to read and that I can just make my own assumptions about what’s happening, though maybe a little more to see would’ve been nice. After my first couple of unsuccessful runs, I thought I was done with the game but I found myself coming back to it the next few days to learn more and give it another shot.

DUSK

Christ! I’m not sure how to respond to this game. I’m iin my 30’s and i grew up on fps games. DUSK is possibly the best game I have ever played. I feel that the creator grew up playing, doom, quake, half-life and the like. The game is so perfectly created by someone who wished that he could create a shooter that took small parts from all of those games and put them together in a way that i would never expect. It is retro in a way that isnt jokey, but it incorporates all the best elements from every 90’s shooter. In conclusion, its not half-life, but it’s better than every other shooter that came before that. Honestly, one of the best shooters of all time.

Fantastic shooter and had me gripped from start to finish. If you like the retro style then this game is for you. Loads of secrets similar to doom etc. Gameplay is smooth and fluid. Runs like a dream at 120fps+.Such a simple game to play, it’s a no nonsense shooter. Updated on a regular basis and great value for money. Loving it.

Highly recommended. A++

Maybe my judgement is affected by playing too many terrible raycast engine maker games lately, but I don’t think this game deserves all the flack it’s getting in the reviews section here. Yes, it has problems, but for the price (especially on sale) it’s a decent classic Quake-wannabe FPS shooter.

The Good:

  • classic Quake-style gameplay (though not nearly as good as Quake itself obviously)

  • no ammo cap for any of the guns, unless it’s 999 or something which I’ve never reached

  • no weapon reloading, though some guns have recoil that gets worse the longer you hold down the fire button which is fine

QUAKE

QUAKE

A very solid port and remaster. I personally prefer playing the game as it was originally meant to be played on Quakespasm, but this is the most easily accessible version of the game and it comes with a lot of awesome goodies. Machine Games & Nightdive are doing god’s work by not only maintaining this build, but adding on to it over time. Quake is one of those classics that just can’t be beat, and it’s fantastic to know it’s only getting more accessible.

Real player with 61.0 hrs in game

An excellent port and remaster of the original Quake bundled with online multiplayer and brand new expansions (Dimension of the Past is the biggest highlight). The dark fantasy setting and visceral / brooding ambiance makes Quake feel very unique from contemporary First Person Shooters even two decades after it’s release. Even at full price there’s hours upon hours of content to enjoy, couldn’t recommend this enough.

The Bolt Age

The Bolt Age

It has some great aesthetics and a nice story, but the game needs to be polished, I will return to this review at a later date, after some updates have been made to remove the bugged enemies, which can spawn in walls, be unable to die, be invisible and there are issues with an inability to change weapons at time.

Pros

Good Aesthetics

Nice Story

Great Graphics

Smooth animation for the electricity

Level design is decent

cons

It is just way to buggy at the minute to be playable, WITH UPDATES this will be a very PROMISING GAME but it just needs some fixes to make it playable.

I was excited to try this game out as from the trailer it looked like a game a really enjoyed in my childhood.

It did turn out to feel that way, the visuals were pretty cool and the weapons felt exciting to use. Unfortunately my laptop has served it’s time and can’t handle this game’s VFX so I’ll pick it up again when I get a new rig.
