Oneiro

Oneiro

Disclaimer: My actual play time is about 15 hours and I have only seen half the game. Yes it’s difficult but in a great way.

Oneiro is perhaps the very definition of “greater than the sum of its parts.” On the surface, it may look like something you’ve seen or played before, but underneath… Ah… Underneath…

There is something beautiful to the “nightmare” of the labyrinth: a transcendent quality to the game wherein its dimensions coalesce into something more. You might say, “What TF is this dude on?” Well sit down and let me tell it to ya mostly straight because this game hooked my apathetic @ss like a grappling hook in a flying spear.

Oneiro is a first-person roguelike action RPG featuring rock-solid gameplay, dead-serious challenge, and a shocking amount of extremely clever and effective design decisions. It’s honestly one of the best games I’ve played in years. If you love roguelikes, King’s Field, Morrowind, or just good action games, at this price it’s an absolute must-buy.

Its core combat is fundamentally well-designed because all damage can be avoided through skill, although doing so is easier said than done. There are several weapon types, each of which features primary and alternate (usually charge-up) attacks. Special mention goes to the default fist weapon, which has several alternate attacks depending on when you right-click during your auto-combo.

Cavesweeper

Cavesweeper

Been a fan of BankBank’s work from way back, some of the wildest games Ive ever played have pored out of this bountiful creative mind. Sally forth me if you wrong, but the Indie scene as we know it would basically not exist if not for BankBank…

As for the game itself, I find it to be a maddeningly enticing combination of the Minesweeper template with some of the greatest storytelling endeavors of the early computer RPG scene… Wizardry 4, Ultima 4, Ultima 7 and Wizardry 6, 7 and 8 have all left their indelible marks upon this curious little sojourn. Quests Galore in this game, a day without Cavesweeper is like a year without rain.

Cavesweeper is a weird combination logic puzzle / RPG battle game that hits this weird sweet spot in my brain. The logic puzzle is exactly the sort of Minesweeper-like constraint-solving mechanic that I can just sit and play with endlessly. But as the game progresses, the puzzle’s difficulty is ratcheted up such that it can’t be completely solved by logic alone, and you have to make tactical decisions about what risks you’re willing to take to gain information. I don’t get sucked into a lot of games, but once I start a Cavesweeper run I gotta see it through. I was pretty sad when Apple broke the iPhone version after an upgrade, so I was super excited to learn it had made its way to the PC.

The Curse Of Yendor

The Curse Of Yendor

True roguelikes are hard to find, especially the ones that are commercialized and sold on Steam. The Curse of Yendor is one of these rare ones. Developed by IBOLOGY LLC (Bob Saunders), the same guy behind the cult classic Approaching Infinity , The Curse of Yendor offers a good experience for both newcomers and veterans of the roguelike genre, providing both the traditional YASD experience as well easier difficulty levels and the possibility to disable permadeath, if you wanna play it like a regular RPG.

Bought Curse of Yendor on a lark with all this extra cash I’ve got now that Marvel Heroes doesn’t want my money any more (BUE bleh).

Yendor is a turn-based rogue-a-like with charming early Ultima graphics. Under the retro hood is a lot of gaming goodness. Besides the usual monsters, loot, vendors, keys and puzzles, there are some surprises.

The procedural, modifiable, tile-based terrain system is what sold me on getting CoY. If you get a pick you can chop through stone walls, or take them down with an earthquake spell. You can shoot thorugh barred windows. You can freze water. Reeds block missiles, but if you cast fireballs in reeds, you can catch yourself on fire. Run away! Destroying the right tiles will weaken the big boss later in the game. I’d love to see a game with triple the variable terrain types as CoY, but for now, this is a lot of fun.

Captains of the Wacky Waters

Captains of the Wacky Waters

Captains of the Wacky Waters is a fast-paced boat roguelike where ships drift and krakens wear moustaches!

Back in the day, helping ghosts get to Heaven was an easy task, but someone wiped out the peace in the Wacky Waters and now all the captains have to learn to defend themselves and their crew. At least until the old days return.

Combine the strength of your rowers and the wind force to navigate around the procedurally generated zones, gradually improving your ship and finding powerful configurations that will help you in combat.

KEY FEATURES

  • Every playthrough is different, allowing a lot of replayability.

  • Good vibes roguelike with loads of wackiness and weirdness.

  • Unlock new playable captains after defeating them. Each ship has different features and a special ability to play with.

  • Save cute little ghosts that will join the crew taking one out of the 6 different roles to help you in your journey.

  • Use many weapons to shoot and slash your enemies, including a cannonball shotgun, a boats cannon, or a giant hammer.

  • Lots of gadgets and upgrades. These are curious and diverse items with different functions to upgrade and configure your ship, from a medieval spear to a pair of giant incognito glasses for your boat.

  • Navigate different zones with unique gameplay styles and aesthetics, which will become more and more strange.

  • Many, many hats! Every living thing in the game wears its own type of hat.

Red Sector

Red Sector

Fun arcade style game that gives you that, “I want to complete the next level” feeling. Still early doors but I feel sure the road-map of improvements will be coming soon.

Real player with 2.8 hrs in game

There are a bunch of things I like about this game. Start with the creative “sector” element of an arcade shooter. Moving to different sectors to clear out before giving the player the decision as to where they want to go next makes it a bit more controllable while breaking up the action in parts.

I also like the visuals. Simple but appealing too.

Really nice product!

Tales of Maj’Eyal

Tales of Maj’Eyal

To begin with, I’ll mention that the base game without dlc is available for free at te4.org, so you can always just take a look at it and decide later if you want to pay for it because it’s one of the best games you’ve ever seen.

I’m the kind of person who leaves a game on while I’m doing other things (in fact I have another game open right now), but nonetheless, my 3k hours in this game is a fair indication of how much I love it. I’m not blind to its faults, so I will mention them later, but first I’m going to talk about what makes this game worth all the time I’ve spent in it.

Real player with 4304.8 hrs in game

I 100% recommend this game and I feel like I am still not giving it enough praise in that statement. BEST. GAME. EVER.

Not a whole lot I can say that hasn’t been said before over the 20 or so years this game has been around. I didn’t start playing it until last year and the first dozen or so runs I thought this game was ‘overhyped garbo’. It took many deaths and about 60-80 hours of ‘off & on’ play (mainly when buzzed) before I was able to begin seeing the sheer beauty this game has to offer, hidden behind it’s incredibly retro graphics and at times obtuse UI/stat boxes.
