Dogfight 1942

Dogfight 1942

Great intuitive controls when using a PS4 controller and DS4 Windows. Flight sticks are apparently not supported. I don’t care. I threw mine out after my FSX days.

Finished this game and loved it. Got more worth than the three dollars i paid for it.

Great arcade game and historically accurate.

Voice acting is hilarious. Aussies saying let’s start the barbie for example.

Sure it’s not in 4K HD all round. There’s a glitch on the Enter the Reich mission where it suddenly goes in to hard mode and you can’t see enemies in the sky.

This game is clearly marketed for fans of arcade flight sims, and in that regard, I think it does its job very well. The game play is very familiar for players like me who have played previous combat wings titles (duh). The graphics (save for buildings and bridges) are beautiful, even today. The aircraft are well modeled and behave much like their real world counterparts, besides the rockets. However, there are a few features the game has that don’t make any sense whatsoever or frustrated the hell out of me, and that will be my main topic for this review.

It’s a fun little game. After initial bad experiences with Nuts!: The Battle of the Bulge (so buggy that it’s unplayable) and Battle of Tallarn (plain bad) this one is a pleasant suprise.

Pros:

  • should appeal to people that like boardgames, card games and 2WW (preferably all of the mentioned)

  • I haven’t encountered any bugs

  • it’s fun

  • you can play it during a long coffe break

  • it’s pretty and supports resolutions above 1080p

  • interface is allright

Cons:

  • price is a little steep for such a small game

Heroes of Normandie

Heroes of Normandie

Heroes of Normandie is a theme fest with a decent game behind it, and if you buy the theme, it works really well. Addictingly well. Slitherine has added just enough tactical meat to the comic book meets classic Hollywood war flick mix to make it good grognard candy. If you like fun, light thematic war games, HoN is all that.

I can’t say if it’s as good, worse or better than the boardgame implementation, but it stands alone, as is. If the promised content is added, I expect it to get better, and it might hit that sweet spot between depth and complexity that allows for a title to get attention from gamers who wouldn’t look twice at a traditional hex and counter tactical game, even a fairly light one.

This game needs more recent reviews. So….

I bought it yesterday while on sale after they released the new action cards.

I’m happy with it. I’ve played board war games for years and even have many from “back in the day”. This is different in that you are not simulating a real battle but solving a tactical challenge. Other reviews mention that and it helped me adjust to the game and enjoy it more.

Based on the other reviews a LOT has changed. I’ve monitored the forums for weeks and noticed the devs are responsive and receptive. Players can be pretty demanding and impatient. The devs seem to take it all in stride.

Angle Wars

Angle Wars

Angle Wars is a light-hearted, top-down war game blending elements of speed and strategy. Control soldiers using a variety of weapons and abilities, across an array of battlefields and game modes. You’ll have to direct your men where to move and at what angles to shoot, taking into account perspective, obstacles, physics, wind, and elevation. Victory or defeat, the balance lies in your hands…because in Angle Wars, you call the shots!

Features

  • Do battle with a variety of weapons, from rifles and pistols to mortars and airstrikes.

  • Hone your skills while winning the war in campaign mode. Progress through dozens of missions across the European theater, alone or co-op with up to 4 players, doing things only an expert marksman can!

  • Use your surroundings to your advantage! Hold the high ground, position your troops in buildings, take cover behind objects for a defensive bonus.

  • Master the angles, and then master them again. Ricochet a bullet off a rock, off a building, and into your enemy’s face.

  • Take wind into account, or you’ll throw a grenade at your own feet, knock a tree down on yourself, or roast your own men in a grass fire.

  • Let destruction be your friend! Take cover in a crater left by an airstrike, or crush an enemy soldier with a falling tree or dislodged boulder.

  • Play a variety of game types, such as the competitive, tactical Battleground, or the frantic co-op survival mode.

  • Advance through the ranks, and earn medals for your awesome marksmanship and heroic deeds on the battlefield!

  • Local multiplayer for 1-4 players.

  • Gamepads fully supported. No gamepads, no problem! Inputs are configurable, so 4 people can play crowded around 1 mouse and keyboard. Perfect for local play, or for Steam’s Remote Play!

Cauldrons of War - Barbarossa

Cauldrons of War - Barbarossa

This is a highly abstract wargame where the abstractions combine elegantly to become more than the sum of its parts. For example, the game has a concept of command points each turn. Each area also has a number representing rail capacity. A rail capacity of 3 means 3 free supply points per turn. When rail capacity decreases in certain area of operations, you are forced to make decisions around prioritizing supply (via truck or horse, which is not always successful) vs. attack/movement. The player is thus forced to tradeoff meeting supply vs. achieving objectives which I think does a good job of conveying a decision that a general would actually need to make.

Real player with 101.0 hrs in game

Cauldrons of War is brilliantly designed wargame that puts you in total command of either the Axis or Soviet forces from the German Invasion of the Soviet Union in June of 1941 until the Soviet Counter offensive in the Winter of 1942. It is one of the most tightly designed wargames on the market and yet its surprisingly complex. The game worries you primarily about issues that would worry a General In Chief, (Supply, Type of Operations, Force Composition of those Operations, how hard and far to push etc…) without worrying you about things a lot of wargames try to force on you, even if your rank doesn’t make that make much sense (micro-management) and in that sense this might be the closest experience to being a Field Marshall during the Second World War of anything that’s been released as a game. There are only a few things I’d change to make this game even better, 1. I’d like higher resolution maps, the games imagery does what it needs to do but it could be even better with an eye popping military style atlas with a great resolution. 2. The campaign needs to extend a bit further into 1942, playing as the Russian’s is nowhere near as fun as playing as the Germans because you’re the punching bag for the entire game and only have a few weeks at the very end of the game to counter strike, the game should extend a bit further, in line with the historical Soviet counter offensive in front of Moscow. 3. At times some key information about why certain tactics work and why later those same tactics don’t work, feels hidden. The game might benefit from displaying combat modifiers or other items that help inform the player why things are working and why they aren’t. Those are minor issues however, overall this is a brilliant game and for only $5, you can’t go wrong with it.

WWII TCG - World War 2: The Card Game

WWII TCG - World War 2: The Card Game

The recent release of the Defiance edition of this game has gone a long way to helping new players get a start. The game presents a challenge in terms of patiently developing your deck of cards to continue to advance in strength.

The game will allow single player but is designed for team play in “platoons” of up to 15 players. Each playing session is played as a single player, but scores and results are cumulative for the team.

There are 4 distinct segments of the game, A Campaign Map of 200 levels with 3 difficulties for a total of 600 maps. These are played with your deck of cards against pre-designed opponents and present a good challenge. Player vs Player, these games take from 3-15 minutes to play and the outcome is generally decided by deck strength as opposed to brilliance in play. Missions are pre-designed mini-games where you are given a deck of cards (for that game only) to play. Balance on these is good and players will generally win 60-80 percent of the time once they learn the nuances of each mission. There are currently a total of 13 missions, each with 3 to 4 difficulty ratings. These rotate on a weekly basis. The final section is “Raids”. There are currently 9 raids, each with 4 difficulty options. These are the focus of team play.

If you like cards, collectables, strategy and World War II games you will love World War II TCG.

The arts, sound and animations are well done. It does capture the world war II atmosphere.

The card game by itself looks simple. But you will rapidly learn that there is a lot to it. Will you use infantries, tanks, planes, ships and/or structures? What faction correspond to your play style: US, german, russian, british or japenese? Each plays differently. There is a lot of cards in the game, thousands if we count crafted elite, diamond and leader cards.

Aces of the Luftwaffe - Squadron

Not z good Shmup.

  • Long loading times

  • The action is hindered by text overlay at times

  • The zoom in zoom out effect adds nothing to gameplay but interfere with the action

  • The whole squadron thing is more a nuisance than anything else4

  • Grindy, you’ll eventually get all upgrade

The first AotL was better as a simple SHMUP, this one is boring

Very fun game. My only complaint is that sometimes with all of the firepower from you and your squadron as well as boss fire, it can be a bit hard to see where you are sometimes. Overall, the challenge is fair in most cases, the voice acting is entertaining and I appreciate how the story looks at both sides of the conflict with the DLC added. I hope to see more in this series!

Mad Devils

Mad Devils

I’ve had an awesome time playing Mad Devils so far! The plot is really interesting and I can’t wait to restart in Inferno Mode. My favourite characters are Chester and Harris so far, and the boss fights are brutal. If you’re a fan of Diablo 3 or Dark Souls, this game definitely scratches that itch. Haven’t hit any bugs so far. Just remember you can use your Blood Shards and XP points in the Pause Menu to upgrade your characters, it’s a lifesaver!

This indie developed game has very faded washed out graphics, repetitive dull combat, no mini-map to show where you are going, no way to rotate the camera, and frame rate issues as well. Camera movement is also sluggish and stuttery, most likely due to the crap Unity engine the game runs on. The game also flashes to the desktop briefly every time a new level is loaded. Your character also seems to get stuck on everything in your path and every level looks the same, taking place mostly in outdoor fields surrounded by lava. A similar game that is MUCH better is Victor Vran. I would much rather play Victor Vran than this game any day.
