Arise: A Simple Story

Arise: A Simple Story

Super Mario 3D World, if everything weren’t cats, they removed the Wii U gamepad, and wasn’t Super Mario 3D world

Random title cause I felt like it. I’m not sure on whether to give a ‘recommended’ or ‘not recommended’ for this game, cause it’s a 50/50 split between aspects of this game that I liked, and the ones that infuriated me.

Pros:

  • The Level Designs are amazing. Most games with a persistent time-switching mechanic only have 2 versions of the same map that show the past and the future, and pressing a button transports you to one or the other, but this game lets you slowly see the polygons shift whilst giving you the feeling of manually seeking and rewinding time like it’s a tape recorder. While most puzzles require you to only go back and forth between 2 points in time and freeze it, some puzzles

! (like the rolling boulder or the falling log in level 3) have you constantaneously scrub time and walk at the same time.

Arise: A Simple Story

Arise is a simple yet clever puzzle-platformer that pushes the puzzle-platformer genre in the right direction. Arise is a soulful, relaxing game that revolves around a man’s journey of reliving his bittersweet memories with his partner.

It’s sweet, it’s simple and it’s truly emotionally driven. And combined with its beautiful world and enjoyable gameplay, we have an all-rounder on our hands.

## Adventures of Shuggy

A pretty decent, decevingly cute, casual puzzle game.

Playing as Shuggy, you merely have to collect the green diamonds in each level to obtain keys, that will unlock further levels. The game presents you with five "Worlds" with their own theme and some short story which I didn't bother reading (that part was really for kids tho).

The first puzzles are very trivial, but the difficulty increases. However, don't expect any masterpiece. Moreover, it is not strictly required to solve all puzzles in each a world in order to progress to the next world.

--- This is not a horrible game, but it's still hard to recommend. Adventures of Shuggy is an unremarkable puzzle platformer with a story so generic it might as well not exist. The premise is simple: find all the gems in each level with the help of a given level's mechanic, while avoiding any source of danger. Most levels have one (rarely more) of several quirks: infinite jumps, super high jumps and gliding, rotating levels, a rope to hang on to and activate mechanisms with, etc. Sounds like a diverse experience, and at first it is! So, what is wrong with it? *– [Real player with 11.6 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198025495787)* --- ![A Time Paradox](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1167730/header.jpg "") ## A Time Paradox A Time Paradox is a puzzle game where you look for a way out that does not create a paradox. Each move matters, the goal is to reach each level exit without being seen by someone from the past (mostly yourself !). Be aware not to block a future your-self ! Anticipation and planning are key skills that will help you go through all the levels. ![](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1167730/extras/20190926_cropped2players.gif?t=1598972700) The game have a single player story mode of about 80 levels, a 2 players cooperative mode, and multiple multiplayer mini games to share good time with friends ! ![](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1167730/extras/cover2-540.png?t=1598972700) A Time Paradox already hooked hundreds of players on Android, but only the PC version will give you high level of comfort for multiplayer. ![](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1167730/extras/story_en540.jpg?t=1598972700) ---

--- --- ![First Racer](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/1364690/header.jpg "") ## First Racer First Racer is a racing game with convenient arcade control in which you can get a lot of good emotions. * The game has the ability to select a car and configure it, both the appearance (body parts, color) and technical specifications (engine, transmission, suspension, tires). * The game has different game regimes: * Racing. * Drift.Tune your favorite car for the modes that you like and go to new records. * Compete with the ghost of other players to improve your experience and set new records on each track. * "First Racer" has visual and technical damage, you need to drive more carefully in order to get to the finish line with a good time. * Play with your partner on the same PC, this makes the passage of the game much more fun. * Enjoy beautiful, stylized graphics. --- ![Timespinner](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/368620/header.jpg "") ## Timespinner ### Personal General Impressions TL;DR: Unlock hardmode with a code, ignore the uneven difficulty curve, ignore the bad narrative and heavy handed politics and poor writing, and the gameplay isn't bad but I'd easily recommend Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest, and Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight over this. I have really mixed feelings on this: I don't regret my purchase, but I also can't recommend it when there are alternatives that are so much better. The game on normal is awful (bad writing, mediocre narrative, and absurdly insanely easy game play). But with a code ! Nightmare777 you can unlock nightmare/hard mode right away; then the difficulty curve is a bit uneven peaking on the second boss and getting too easy by endgame. But overall I had some good times with the game play and I don't really play metroidvania's for good narratives or good writing (though I guess I've been a bit spoiled by Hollow Knight, Ori and the Blind Forest, and even Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight all of which I easily recommend over Timespinner). *– [Real player with 89.4 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197975832723)* As someone who backed this game on kickstarter and was a regular on his weekly development livestreams, this game was a massive disappointment. While it gets the basics of a game done right it never bothers to do anything to make itself truly unique amongst the other games of its kind. I'll first give this game some credit and say there is some semblance of a quality game in here. Bodie has evolved as a pixel artist through HD index painting, and a majority of the landscapes have a good look to them, save for a couple of isolated areas that have a plain black background, which to me seem unfinished. Another quality is that the soundtrack is also above average, with several tracks approaching that of Michiru Yamane's level of talent. The game's basic setup is a revenge story that pits magic against technology. Also, the game controls are tight and responsive, and unlike the GBA Metroid games it doesn't hold your hand through the whole thing, letting you progress by realizing and learning what each upgrade does. In essence, the game benefits from a strong start. *– [Real player with 28.1 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197977743822)* --- ![Sine Mora EX](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/606730/header.jpg "") ## Sine Mora EX What I can appreciate about Sine Mora is how the central plot element becomes the central game mechanic in a very fluid and innovative way. Sine Mora is a game about time control, and its central game mechanic is that you never lose health, but time. If you take damage, that's time off the clock. If you kill enemies, that's time added to the clock. You are essentially invincible, but lose powerups and the game if you ever get hurt enough times that you run out the clock. A clock that is always ticking down, but either gains or loses time as a penalty or reward in combat. *– [Real player with 14.4 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198043728918)* While it may be a unique take on the bullet hell formula, Sine Mora's attempts at being its own thing put it at odds with the notion of being well balanced, and it ultimately ends up flawed to the point that it's an active struggle to enjoy. To start off by giving praise where it's due, the game is gorgeous, the soundtrack is high-quality, the controls are mostly fluid, the story has some really cool twists, the boss design is fab, and the Hungarian voice acting is pretty dope (no idea about the English, as I switched to the original voice track from the get-go). *– [Real player with 6.7 hrs in game](http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198025540438)* --- ![Super Intergalactic Gang](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/429260/header.jpg "") ## Super Intergalactic Gang Really cool game, especially in local co-op mode.
