Doom & Destiny Worlds

Doom & Destiny Worlds

Was a huge fan of the first two games, so I was excited about diving into the world of Do&De again. Crafting games aren’t normally my favorite, but this one keeps things simple enough that I can manage (no hunger/thirst meters, THANK YOU), I’m also not a fan of item deterioration, but it makes sense with the crafting. so far I’ve explored 11 different islands. the puzzles are pretty straighforward so far, but the crafting really drags out progressing the story, especially when your weapons and armor break and you have to make new ones.

Doom & Destiny Worlds third part from the D&D series. In this part we will find a completely new approach to the game. First of all, an open world which is very large. Many of different islands with challenges and lot of strange monsters to defeat. Crafting is also new thing. You can create all your equipment. Lots of weird potions to kick up your nerds. Being able to build and destroy almost anything. Simply a wonderful adventure for hours. Just Gigawesome game! I also recommend the previous parts which are just as great as this one. I already have, and you?

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition

This game is not a “modern” JRPG. This game is not for people that want to briskly play through the game and then never touch it again. This game is not for people that want to mash through every fight. This game is for people that enjoy experiencing absolutely everything a game has to offer, and exploring all of its gameplay systems and mechanics. If you are willing to put in the time learning its mechanics, unlocking altered artes, learning how different characters play, doing many of its sidequests etc — you are rewarded with one of the most satisfying experiences you will ever get in a JRPG.

If you want:

JRPG Plot where the world doesn’t revolve around the main character

Engaging, evolving battle system that grows as you progress

Multiple playable characters with varying fighting styles

The choice of easy, straightforward fighting or complicated takes-hours-to-master techniques

A cast of characters who while at times are a bit trite, are engaging and memorable

Multiplayer battles! I’ve beaten this game with many friends, multiple times, with us using different characters

A world well built with lore to discover that still doesn’t hand you every answer and asks you to piece some together yourself

How much of this game I’ve played: 12 Hours, 35 minutes

How I’ve played so much: I had a pre-ordered non-steam copy.

Completed Main story, not the super secret boss area.

Here’s why you’d be interested in this game: Good rhymes, good story, old school gameplay.

Good rhymes: If you haven’t heard of BeNeVoLeNcE, you might have heard of Mega Ran - he’s known for clean nerdcore rhymes over chiptune beats and melodies. Hip Hop by both is featured in the game, and it’s not an “afterthought” like it might be in some games - the music is interwoven in with the story - it’s actually rewarding to gain access to the rhymes that go along with the instrumentals in different parts of the game.

Spartoi Meadow

The missing link between the PS1 and Dreamcast®, it really feels like some an obscure 2006 Indie game you would find on some random site. I really like that aspect of it.

Pretty bare bones but it’s not intolerable, combat feels okay despite how simple and loose it feels. Its not the best but it works.

Bosses are annoying since they spam their attacks too often and they seem balanced around your partner distracting them for a bit.

Boot Hill Heroes

Boot Hill Heroes

[Spoiler-Free Review]

Setting an RPG in the spaghetti west just makes so much sense!

Boot Hill Heroes is a modern RPG designed as a sort of homage to the glory days of the Role Playing and Wild West genres. The story is easy to follow and progresses at a snappy pace, the difficulty is forgiving (for the most part), and while it doesn’t allow for true ‘save anywhere!’ functionality, you’ll never feel locked-in to a play session beyond what your time allows. Despite being a linear experience overall, the game still manages to deliver a large scope RPG feel (complete with unique characters, game mechanics, and plot twists and turns throughout).

just finished this great game, which reminds me of the classic rpgs we use to play on the snes in the older days.

which also has hints to past gaming greats, which can be noticed on your voyage.

you play as the son of the great sheriff howl who once went toe to toe with the saints little gang with the help of the boot hill posse.

this is his story as he takes on his fathers legacy. along the way he meets various friends on his quest to stop the saints little gang who have once again rose to sew chaos.

I have read most of the reviews about the game before the purchase and I must say after trying it out, Im totally flabbergasted by how harsh and untrue the complaints were. Yes, there are significant changes (not all good) from the previous release but overall it is STILL a bloody decent game for its time. I have played my fair share of bad games my entire life but this aint it and I often wonder if those people who condemned this game even come from the same planet I live in while I load the game up and think about what combos Im able to pull off that session.

The game is just as fun as I remember, the combat systems haven’t changed. The game would have done well, if not better, if the actual 3d models were utilized instead of sprites, imo, but regardless: Now it’s all in HD, with a loading time of less then 5 seconds and smooth 60 frames (GTX 1060). I’ve been having a lot of fun with this beat-em-up port. But: With that said, there are some glaring criticisms.

-Artifacts from the original port are still there, and still outstanding. The pixelation being the most obvious, especially in the cutscenes.

Solenars Edge II: Champions

Solenars Edge II: Champions

Intro

Welcome to the resort! In Solenars Edge II: Champions, you’ll be able to customize your character and explore a resort full of minigames. Looking for fights? We got you covered. A lot of characters with different classes are available to recruit for VR battles. Be warned though, as losing will also mean death. The game seems to have co-op support from a different build branch, but since I didn’t try it, this review will be based on that.

Pros:

  • Freedom to build your party from many characters in the game

Tales of Symphonia

Tales of Symphonia

I’d first like to clarify that most of the negative reviews for this game were about glitches caused by it being shoddy port. These issues have been resolved.

This game is a real time rpg focused on gameplay with combos, special moves and team composition, and a story with heavy characterisation, strong motives, clear goals, twists and turns, hours of content, side quests and decent writing.

The gameplay is unique. The battles take place in 3d, but each character can only move in a 2d plane, with left and right going back and forward, and up and down jumping and crouching respectively. It seems like a system built of a limited controller however even modern controllers would struggle to undertake this in a better way. The only way to move in the 3rd dimension is to target a different enemy then move forward or back.

Tales of Symphonia is one of my favorite JRPGs ever, but I decided not to review it until the various technical issues are fixed. Now that Bamco apparently got work done, I can actually recommend it.

The Technical

At first, I hesitated to buy because 1) my hardware is worse than even the minimum requirements and 2) many bad reviews about the port being a mess. In the end, I decided to buy it when it went on sale. The game wouldn’t even launch… until I discovered TSFix, an amazing community mod, which fixed that problem for me. It also enhances graphics a LOT, so I suggest checking it out. Don’t let the game’s sys-requirements scare you off; if even my underwhelming hardware can manage this game (at a steady 30 FPS with good graphics settings), maybe yours can too!
