Friend ReQuest - A Playable Teaser

Friend ReQuest - A Playable Teaser

Most of the game is pretty boring, so as to show how dull this person’s life really is. However, that doesn’t exactly make it enjoyable to play, and there’s barely any story for the first half of the game. Then, for the second half, there’s more story, but less to do in general.

I also have a habit of pressing esc to check my stats/ pause the game, and that exits this game. There is no save function, so I had to restart. They do tell you that there is no save function at the beginning of the game though.

I’m sooooo excited for Amity Chain and this really sold it! Amity feels so real and all her conversations are so fleshed out I’m really looking forward to seeing more from her and other characters. Really neat spritework that I’m also excited to see more of!

Tip: stick around at the “end” of the game when the screen goes white!

Cute Bite

Cute Bite

Cute Bite is a fun raising sim where you take control of a butler (whose name you can decide, but her default is Saule) who is in charge of training the daughter of her former vampire master. The “Little Mistress” (also nameable; default is Buttercup), as Saule calls her, is far older than Saule herself, but after being confined to a coffin for centuries, she has lost many of her skills and reverted to the form of a child. It’s the player’s job to make Buttercup powerful enough within a year to complete the blood ritual which allows Saule to live.

A vampire has been locked away so long that her body has reverted to the size she was when she first became a creature of the night – when she was child. After being freed, she must build up her various skills to restore her adult form. Her faithful butler is more than happy to assist, but is she hiding something?

Information

• All romances take place after she regains her adult form. This game does not involve or promote pedophilia.

• Gameplay involves stat raising (which determines endings), and a hunting mini-game (to replenish energy via biting people for blood), along with other fun mechanics.

Hot Pot For One

Hot Pot For One

It’s mostly about loneliness, very, very short, and easy to misunderstand. By most standards, it would be barely a game at all. But if you don’t have expectations this thingy never tried to meet, it is kinda… nice. You stand in the kitchen, cook, eat, and for every piece you eat, memories start floating up, showing how food connects you to people, mostly your significant other. You eat rather little, clean up a bit and watch the end titles. There are no other people, no movement, no action, and if you were depressed to start with, you are not going to feel less depressed. But you may recognize the feeling.

The good:

  • Nice atmosphere

  • Music is sweet

The bad:

  • Boring as hell

  • Story isn’t worth it because there is none.

  • Art made for the “memories” you get when you eat a piece of food are just crudely drawn stickmen.

  • All that stuff in the fridge and cupoards? You can’t touch it. I was expecting to have the ability to get silly and pour coke into my hotpot. Nope.

You turn it on, put stuff in it that doesn’t burn (so it’s no fun), eat only a set number of food from it that makes you think about ugly stickmen, put a tiny amount away in a large fridge and then dump over 150 food items into the bin.

This game is pretty unassuming, but I think the simplicity of the gameplay works in favor for the overall game. With smart humour and surprisingly meta writing, Reigns: Her Majesty exceeded all expectations I had of this game I bought on a whim. I expected something cute and short, but I got a satirical game with a surprisingly deep political system.

The game operates much like a typical Tinder app (swipe left or right for positive or negative reactions). It expands upon this by adding a political edge to it, such that your answers have consequences on the four pillars of your kingdom (Church, People, Military, and Wealth). Surprisingly, this simple system was able to weave politics into its scenarios well, especially since as a ruler and leader, your decisions will have consequences. Eventually, if those consequences rack up, then you go out just like if you were in Game of Thrones - usually, that means death. It’s actually pretty hard to stay alive in this game until much later, and my first few runs as queen ended quite unfortunately under the boots of my citizens due to their love for me, or because I drowned in a lake since my carriage of pure gold broke. Fun times in queendom!

The Nine Lives of Nim: Fortune’s Fool

The Nine Lives of Nim: Fortune’s Fool

A very charming SIM/Visual Novel hybrid about a cat faerie called Nim who is tasked to search for her prince in a city called Valora.

You have 1 month to increase your stats than can trigger storylines of different Shakespeare characters and get several endings that shapes the fate of Nim. 1 month doesn’t seem like a lot but this game has a lot of storylines, which actually made me interested with Shakespeare’s works. Not to mention a lot of endings and different ending variations that gives this a high replay value. It was enjoyable and addiction to the end.

A traditional stat-raising life simulation game with interesting new approaches.

The mechanics are very simple, but there is a lot of depth to be found in the different plotlines and how actions affect the game and endings. The protagonist’s three forms as cat, spirit, and human adds a unique layer of complexity.

I definitively recommend this game for fans of the genre.

Spirited Heart Deluxe

Spirited Heart Deluxe

Based on the poor reviews, I was expecting Spirited Heart: Deluxe to be utterly unplayable. I was pleasantly surprised to find that, though not without several problems, it’s not nearly that bad. While not the best raising sim I’ve ever played, it’s certainly not the worst, and it even does some interesting things with the format. I’d say its biggest flaw is that it’s very old, and thus, obviously the work of a young developer. It lacks polish, but it’s got some heart.

THE GOOD

♥ Sorta neat

I liked the premise - I’m a sucker for simulation games, especially ones filled with choices.

Unlike other games, there’s many characters to pursue a relationship with, and along with being able to choose your character species, you can also choose whether to be straight or lesbian. Nice! -:)

Then there’s stats - essentially character traits like gardening, charisma, etc. that effect the jobs you can have, and the choices/outcomes to things. Unfortunately what I quickly realized was the game isn’t about a story or choice - it’s about the stats.

Always Remember Me

Always Remember Me

**Footfalls echo in the memory

Down the passage which we did not take

Towards the door we never opened

~T.S. Eliot**

This is the first visual novel that I’ve played from Winter Wolves, and I must say that I’m not impressed. Always Remember Me is an otome game with a somewhat ordinary concept, annoyingly stereotypical characters, suicidally repetitive choice actions and a scarcity of events about the main story to keep you interested. At this point, I must confess that I’ve completed my first playthrough quite easily and gave in a reaction of “seriously?” at the first ending that I’ve discovered. During my second playthrough… I got bored and wandered off to do something else, forgetting the game running. When I remembered that I was playing the game, I came back and gave in 2 more hours of the gameplay to collect the missing achievements - a.k.a. fast-forwarded through some repetitive actions and only read event dialogues. Thus, my gaming time.

Always Remember Me

One to be best forgotten

Review

I know I am probably the last person on the planet to give any kind of opinion on visual novels since I have only played two but as a gamer who enjoy most genres, here is my two cents anyway. One (Doki Doki Literature Club) I canned pretty early on into my play session because of how poorly written the dialog was matched with some of the most annoying characters ever conceived. I also didn’t find the overarching story all that interesting either so felt there was no need to press on further and waste my precious time.
