Need For Conquest

Need For Conquest

TL;DR:

The visuals may be basic, but the AI is very well done, which creates tension-filled moments as you try to decide where to allocate your limited troops. You need patience and attention to accomplish anything, which makes things rewarding and addictive (serious case of “one more turn” syndrome for me).

Full review

I’m a veteran strategy game player (my favorites include Civilization, Total War, Company of Heroes and Age of Empires). I was asked to try out Need for Conquest by the developer, who I know personally. I thought I would only check out the game for an hour or two, but then the most unexpected thing happened – I got hooked! This simple Risk clone gave me the biggest “one more turn” syndrome since I played Civilization. I have put off meals and personal hygiene just so I could find out what would happen next turn: Will I finally be able to complete my conquest of South America (and get a nice draft bonus)? Will my defenses in Indochina hold? Will my two AI neighbors fight each other or will they turn their attention to my not-quite-well-defended eastern border? You get the picture. My playtime is now at 60+ hours.

A stock basic RISK like game, whose strength, I imagine, is in the variety of the maps.

I played one game, and while the AI was pretty weak, everything worked. The controls were pretty solid, and the music and sound effects were fine. There was no animation.

Obviously it cannot be a total RISK clone. This game does not have cards to collect, or turn ins, and there is no plus to taking out a fellow player. The game does seem to be trying to work new ideas in to the mix, for example some territories can have a resource called Stones that gives armies in that territory armor. Not sure how that works into the game yet, but it does show creativity.

Power Pushout

Power Pushout

Power Pushout is a turn-based strategy game with martial arts elements set in an epic asian environment. Choose your warrior and master figures and fight with them in a wild battle over the control of the game board. You can either push your opponent off the ground or conquer the opposing towers to decide the game. But be careful that your enemy doesn’t sneak past your troops like a ninja and usurp victory.

MAIN FEATURES

  • Defeat your opponent with cool finishing moves, sword assaults and kung fu kicks are on the agenda.

  • Choose your warrior and master figures, and combine their Power Points to destroy your opponent’s pieces.

  • Use the included map editor to create your own Zen garden. The smart placement system helps you get results quickly under full control.

  • You can trigger Earthquakes or add Super Crystals to surprise your opponent.

Super Crystals provide your character with extra power or a greater range of movement.

  • Power Pushout offers you four different game modes:

    Classic, Normal, Destruction and Football.

Each mode can be played online or locally versus a friend or an AI, which is based on machine learning and smart heuristics.

Dungeon Crusher Kiritan

Cute little puzzle game with unique presentation.

Combat/movement is not exactly turn-based and more like tile-based - you move at the same time as your enemy 1 tile at a time and have to figure out when you will be in advantage to strike first.

Levels are handcrafted and not procedurally generated which is a big plus in my opinion.

There is also a level builder so looking forward to cool community-made maps.

Can recommend, especially with the launch discount.

Tohoku Kiritan is a VOICEROID character popular in Japan. VOICEROID is a type of text to speech software widely used in the Japanese Let’s Play scene. The Japanese way of doing things dictates that if you can substitute something with a cute anime girl you definitely should and it makes anything automatically better. Instead of using a webcam to record their faces most Japanese let’s players prefer to use anime characters as avatars and if they don’t possess cute girl voices, then the VOICEROID package provides an easy solution for both needs. The characters can serve as narrators or commentators to the provided gameplay thus putting more focus on the let’s player’s script writing ability rather than personal charisma, while also boosting creativity and providing greater freedom. As an added bonus most VOICEROID characters double as singing software on the VOCALOID or UTAU platform and therefore come with an already established fan base in the music scene. Of course this approach to let’s plays and streaming is largely unknown outside of Japan because of the language barrier. It’s also the reason why you may have stumbled on this game’s page without knowing what it’s about.

Nightfall Hacker

Nightfall Hacker

I have played Nightfall Hacker to full completion, down to all of its achievements and all of its endgame content.

I find it to be a very good game with a decent amount of content.

While it is certainly not hard, the game’s AI is quite effective and a lot smarter than the AI of the game it is inspired by. It might not be as coordinated or as strategic as a human player and it doesn’t always know the most effective moves, but it’s not that easy to fool under most circumstances either. For instance; you have to learn how the AI thinks in order to get certain strategies or tactics to work the way that you want them to.

Very fun! A faithful recreation of The Nightfall Incident, but I’m glad the game goes the extra mile and includes new maps and units as well. I particularly liked the new Architect, Zombie, and Trojan Horse units

Ever Fallen Empire

Ever Fallen Empire

Ever Fallen Empire is a turn-based galactic empire strategic management game.

( With significant “Custom Game” support. The main campaign is practically a mod resting on the framework. )

The galaxies of EFE are complex, and governed by a dense strata of Anchors Of Civilisation.

From the Integrity of Government, to the Cohesion of the Populace, and the Infrastructure of Industry. And 12 more.

Anchors that knock on to one another, causing waves of repercussions to sweep your territory. Waking people to the Empire’s deep corruption.

As the Annihilationists rise from their holes seeking to end all life, as your rivals move to take your throne for their own cruel ends, and the freedom fighters marshal rebellions to free themselves. A galaxy inhabited by men and women that seek to survive and flourish. Or steal and murder.

Some heed the Creator’s words.

Others, forge their own definitions of morality.

Factions of characters, join together. Funnelling their resources into effecting the galaxy at large.

Into assisting you, or fighting you.

You, the New Authority of the Ever Empire.

But you shall order vast operations.

To save Humanity from itself - and from you - for the last time in all history.

Cripple communication. Ruin space-travel. Shatter the very stars of our night’s sky.

Build deep archives of our histories cemented into leviathanic super planets.

Coax Autonomous Intelligences into siding with your ideals.

This is your empire. Your people, they are your responsibility.

You shall not allow it to become, Ever Fallen.

You will bring down this rancid empire, forever.

There are a number of campaigns, and once-off scenarios. As well as extensive custom-game tools that allow you to alter the very fabric of the galaxies you shall command.

EFE relies on imagination, and lacks graphical views or vistas. Though I do put effort into making it look presentable.

This is not an action packed game and is mostly menus. It is a slow paced strategy management game about planning for events far into the future.

This game sadly, costs a bit of time and strong mental effort.

Sorry about that. Not really much I can do given the subject matter.

But I promise you stories of a far future Humanity that has found itself enslaved to systems we are already weary of.

And that you will find yourself in complex, daunting situations of slim yet grand hopes.

Main Campaign

The main campaign hold you as the new supreme Authority of the mamothetic galaxy spanning Ever Empire.

An empire unmatched in all of history, with a single human being at it’s pinnacle of power.

Yet. You are tasked by your father to destroy it. Before it becomes more nightmarish than it already is. While keeping Humanity alive despite the downfall you shall incur.

Regardless of which campaign you choose. Use logic, thoughtfulness, and planning, reach a complex end goal despite strong opposition.

Execute planned Actions to effect huge portions of the galaxy known as Locells. Each with deep statistics that represent their current state.

Carefully shift these “Anchors Of Civilisation” to your needs. Forging rebellions, inspring collapses, upsetting economies, and suppressing would be attempts to maintain the Ever Empire.

Ultimately, destroy your own Empire.

Victory rests on your ability to predict the fallout of your actions as the supreme Authority of a science-fiction galaxy that tries to be real.

If you find the campaign too easy, go into the Universe Forge and make your own nightmare.

Maker’s Pace to you.

New Authority, of all Humanity.

As the leader of a faction, plan your way to one of many complex objectives :

  • As the New Authority; Bring down the Ever Empire, and preserve Humanity despite it.

  • As the Dealkorator; Prevent the Ultimatum of Martel Legata, and preserve the efforts of the Second Authority.

  • As the People’s Choice; Overthrow the Autonomous Overlord that controls the last of humanity, and survive the cold of the galaxy.

  • And many many more user-generated custom campaigns. ( Yes, you can make your own. )

Take Action for your future, and counter the efforts of your opponents.

  • Actions ; Execute galaxy shifting actions from overthrowing Governments and detonating stars, to seeding new Factions within the galaxy.

  • Factions ; Computer Controlled Factions that can perform the same Actions you can. Each working towards their own goals and objectives.

  • Characters ; A living galaxy, with Ever Empire Officers, Rebel Leaders, and Local Heros taking Actions to protect their homes and further their desires.

Plan against a large, complex, and daunting galaxy.

  • 81 Locells; Galactic territories represented as simple square regions.

  • 15 Anchors; That represent all corners of civilisation. That play off of each other, change and shift, and determine Events and Catastrophes.

  • Events; Deterministic, non random events that are the complex result of your actions, and the Anchors of Locells.

  • Flags; Characteristics that determine how a given Locell operates. From Autonimous Artificial Overlords, to Super Novellic Nebula.

Hexteria

Hexteria

Hextremely fun puzzle game at times, and overally never repetitive with all the goals and challenges. However, there’s 1 concern: the more you beat, the more coins you get; the more power-ups you can unlock, and with all these power-ups, challenges can be rendered uncomplicated easily and early in! Now, of course you can decide not to use power-ups, but there’s no incentive for doing so, hence you will prefer to ‘cheat’ more … This made me decide to give a lot of the challenges a rest (for now), because they turned out a bit unsatisfying sometimes. I also ended up with a lot of useless coins, having unlocked all power-ups sooner than I wanted actually.

Real player with 10.8 hrs in game

Hexteria is a great puzzle game. It’s simple yet strategic gameplay always has you thinking about what tile you should turn next, and what move will get you one step closer to winning (even if it looks like you’re going to lose).

The campaign offers challenging matches against an AI whose difficulty increases the more you progress. Multiplayer matches are certainly fun, and with the addition of being able to use your own maps or other’s created in the level editor, as well as randomized maps it makes the game never feel too repetitive.

A little, cute gem here.A turn-based tactics game where you control some slimes and fight against other slimes. Levels are set up as various grid like terrains and you are allocated a certain amount of units to play and position at the beginning of the level. Here, you must defeat them within three turn, using different types of slimes which unlocks as you progress such as ranged slimes and shield slimes. Each turn you can take three actions including moving and attacking your unit, and choosing which direction your slime faces at the end of the turn. This is necessary as slimes take different amounts of damage depending on which way they attack and are attacked, so strategising your positioning is key. As well as there being more various kinds of slimes later on, there are also levels get more complicated as there are traps that arise, different levels of the terrain as well as the scale getting bigger.

I really like this game, it is excellent. Is one of the only games I’ve played where watching the enemies move is as interesting as moving your slimes. The art style is excellent and the music is also really good. The menus are really well made, and everything is easy to use. Every move you make is impact, and the levels are challenging but fair. I really like the three round cap, as it means that you don’t end up hanging back and hiding. It is a highly enjoyable game, I highly recommend getting this game, it is excellent.

For what it is, I would recommend this item. Everything is basic, but if you wanna run a game on a budget this is probably your better option. Only issues so far is that items are all tied to mouse click. So if you want to select something you are gonna move it as well. Only other thing is if you accidently make more maps, you can’t delete them. At least from what I have tried.

Really fun strategy game with an environmental twist. This premise has you doubting between going all-in for the win and playing more conservatively to preserve the environment. I played beta for the past two years and the final version is even more polished! Server issues on launch day aside, great game and I certainly recommend it.

Extra fun when playing with friends, the AI is a decent matchup for beginners but can be predictable at times.

Update: Even better with the map editor and workshop update. You can now play with your friends on maps that you created yourself.

I would rate this:

Overall - 7/10

Strategy - 10/10

Graphics - 7/10

Originality - 9/10

Replay ability - 4/10

This game is great fun and it seemingly has the perfect balance of R.N.G. and strategy. I have never found myself in a spot where bad R.N.G. couldn’t have been avoided. Playing with friends is great if you can, but the AI are a good challenge. (The AI NeuralNewt on hard can put up a great fight.) This game isn’t really complete yet, I heard of some additions and maybe a campaign being added later on but the game as it is is fantastic- in concept. As I said don’t let its retro graphics fool you. It can drag out and be a bit and become, well, less nuanced to state it simply, and after playing it for a while, both through playing many rounds and/or long games.
