Minesweeper Classy

Minesweeper Classy

As far as I’m concerned, this is the best version of minesweeper on steam. This version feels smooth, has interesting levels, and keeps track of your win rates and best times. The hint system is useful in removing some risk of random guessing from your runs. These are all good additions. I do however have some gripes that are potential deal-breakers. The game allows you to unlock different color schemes, but none of them have anything close to a night-mode style. Every single color scheme has white tiles, which means lots of flash-bangs. Unfortunately, the free minesweeper browser version gives this a good run for it’s money. The browser version also has color coded numbers for easier pattern recognition. I wish this was an option as well. Once you get used to playing with colored numbers, it takes you a minute to think about certain moves when you play without. This version is well worth the money, because minesweeper is difficult to get wrong, but I do with it had a few more options for customizing the appearance of the game. Either way, if you enjoy playing minesweeper, this is well worth your time.

Pathological Tires

Pathological Tires

I was able to try this game during Early Access and it is extremely well-made. It remains one of the only examples of a “Racing Puzzle Game” I’ve heard of, and it’s not just a good concept – the level design is stellar, with new challenges and mechanics expanding the design space from area to area, and the game really sticks the landing. If you’re a fan of either puzzle games or racing fandom, this game is for you!

This time, the Salesman is Traveling in style!

Pathological Tires is a great example of simple-yet-challenging. The core gameplay of telling a car what path to take is understood immediately, with clever level design naturally revealing the game’s complexity as you play. Once you start having to think carefully about acceleration and cornering, it gets really interesting.

The game retains some nice racing quirks, too. Setting a new “Personal Best!” time on a puzzle feels really good, even if you’re not quite to the par time yet, and watching your new solution’s car race your previous Best’s ghost is exciting.

Sven’s SudokuPad

Sven’s SudokuPad

A must-buy for fans of CrackingTheCryptic, or anyone who enjoys Sudoku in all it’s variations

I bought this as soon as I knew it was out. And my first impression? Puzzle 1: “A Sudoku with only 27 given digits?!” How is this even possible??!?!

Is this the best Sudoku interface ever? Obviously. Any CtC fan will be able to tell you that. Even Simon uses it with Great Aplomb, and he apparently doesn’t even know about any of the shortcut keys.

But the interface is just a side-note. What makes this really special is the puzzles themselves. All handcrafted by Mark (the default puzzles) or, of you use it to play the puzzles from the channel, then by practically all of the best puzzle creators in the world. What they’ve done with this puzzle form in the last few years will literally astonish anyone who only plays the odd puzzle in the newspaper or magazine.

Minimal Crypt

Minimal Crypt

Minimalistic indeed, yet complex enough to give you headaches, well designed, innovative, surprisingly varied and makes me struggle much more than I am willing to admit. It’s definetely worth its price and you’ll be able to enjoy it for days with the community levels.

Real player with 7.2 hrs in game

Puzzle games with genuinely innovative mechanics are incredibly rare these days and this little gem in the rough is a perfect example of something brand new that’s easy to pick up but incredibly hard to master.

The simplistic graphics, smooth, minimalistic animations, fantastic soundtrack and the exponentially steep difficulty curve all culminate together brilliantly.

For just 5 bucks you’ve got access to the 5-ish hours campaign (including a secret level that you unlock by inputting the Konami code) and a plethora of community made levels.

Hexdoku

Hexdoku

I love hexagons and general deductive stuff more than I hate sudoku, so I had to try hexdoku at some point.

you have to place various shapes all over the hex-based grids, without repeating them in the same line or area. no guessing necessary, one solution per level. 32 main levels unlocked one by one, including a tutorial and a final ‘thank you’ level. 31 bonus stages with slightly different rules are made available on separate branches when you reach them on the map (3x10 but one also has a tutorial, and they also unlock one by one).

Bean and Nothingness

Bean and Nothingness

Only a couple worlds in and this game has already had a good few fantastic puzzles (and some very tricky ones I’ll need to get back to). The monster types are cool and its interesting to deduce the properties of new ones as you solve the areas simpler puzzles and then really apply what you’ve learned to the later ones. I can’t wait to see more of the monsters and figure out how they work.

Real player with 10.1 hrs in game

Good puzzles and a lot of them. I can’t describe the game any better than the game description already does. It’s accurate. I’m pleasantly surprised by the ability to watch my old solutions from the demo while replaying puzzles, complete with waffling about wasting turns.

Cubiscape 2

Cubiscape 2

It COULD be a fun puzzle game but the movements are confusing since you might move in the wrong direction because you thought W took you in a different direction to where it actually moves you. it should just be you click the adjacent square you move to

I see no downsides. Here is a list - a small one - why this game is good.

  • free to play

  • nice logic puzzles

  • build your own puzzles

  • start with easy riddles end with brain breaking hard ones

  • regular updates

It’s a yes from me. If you want to chill, beat some time and solve riddles. This could be a game for you. :)
