Tiles

Tiles

Its great. I mean, what can I say that hasn’t already been said about it in various reviews? It is a game that takes a wonderful mix of puzzle like planning and assessment of levels with the action packed and skill based movement of running games - especially at the later levels.

Overall, the game I think succeeds because of its general simplicity of design and concept, but in a way that makes complexity able to be built into the level design itself. It may take an hour just working on one level, coming up with one strategy and testing it over and over until you find its a deadend and you need a new route and having to work back with a new strategy, and once you find that working path you want to take, it can take many of attempts before you finally get that strategy down and finish it out.

Tiles, for me, is a perfect example of a love/hate relationship. When I first started playing this title, it infuriated me and I was so close to abandoning ship all together. However, with perseverance and a lot of finger cramp, I completed the entire game with most of the achievements (apart from the impossible achievement which is perfectly named). I think if any player gives this game enough of their time, they will learn to love it and revel in its difficulty. There are issues however like the fact that there is only one music track on a loop for the entire game, or the issue that there is no leaderboard for levels on the custom maps. That being said, the level editor is wonderfully designed with only a few additions which I would like to add; and add to the game all together:

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron’s Workshop

Game is awesome,

at first it seems to be too easy, but the focus here lies clearly on score-hunting, there are enough incentives to reward the player properly for high scores. Is the score high enoug you become rated with stars, depending on the rating you unlock achievments, music and editor parts.

This also means that playing the game just normally, won’t satisfy the urge for challenge, that’s important to notice, if you die merely your score resets and the progress in the current room, which isn’t much. If you die three times in a row on the same room you can make yourself invincible, which is a bit too much in my opinion, but at the same time, it’s just there for completing the short main campaign, after you’ve been through it, there is a much harder campaign which is hard enough that it might be even interesting to play if you not play for scores, in these levels the invincibility option is turned off. It took me some time and was pretty hard, but earning thhree stars in the hard versions is highly satisfying.

I’d like to applaud Taito for standing behind their product and fixing the major bugs the game had that originally prevented me from recommending this title… but it’s still not perfect for the current price point. While it no longer has any game breaking issues, the main Story levels still lack the visual charm of the original Bubble Bobble (which thankfully works great now and is also included via the “Arcade of Memories”) in regards to enemy designs and block skins; proving that new doesn’t always equal better.

Doodle Derby

Doodle Derby

Super fun and chaotic! I could play this game all day! And I have at Gamescom 2019 :)

The look of the game is really unique. I am very curious about the single player and level editor, since I mainly played the multiplayer game in the demo and beta versions.

Can’t wait to continue with this version of the game.

If you don’t mind ruining some friendships playing through the very competitive levels, this is a must purchase!

The game’s just not that fun. The problem solving in the campaign feels like work from driving a clunky and overrealistic car while collecting crates and experimenting through trial and error to figure out exactly where to put parts and get through the track. Nobody plays multiplayer at all either, so free build is pointless without other people to play with.

I wanted to draw spontaneous tracks and goof around. All I got was a half-baked architecture lesson.

Trials Evolution: Gold Edition

Trials Evolution: Gold Edition

Let’s get this straight: I absolutely adore this game, it is really fun to play and see how you improve over time.

Even better if you have a couple of friends to compete with on the leadersboards or play a bit of multiplayer.

You can even make your own tracks in the editor which is pretty easy to get started in, but advanced enough to make crazy minigames and really slick looking tracks.

If the game will actually run at all for you that is.

It seems to be a coin-toss if this game will work on your system or not, and if it actually does run it might still lag even with really good hardware. I’m running it with a HD7970 and an i7 3770k so it runs well just because of the brute force.

TL:DR

Game is good but online is not available, dlc not available, custom maps are only available if downloaded within one week of being posted.

Buy if you’re fine with just playing the base Evolution and HD tracks, but not for any other features.

Before starting I want to say that I love this game, and it is amazing, and by far my favorite entry in the Trials series. I’ve been playing Trials since the first flash games released, and Trials is an incredible game. It has a perfect balance of easy to pick up, difficult to master. The physics in Trials Evolution are in my opinion the most on point most good feeling physics in the series. There is tons of content, plenty of customization, a very impressive track editor, and a lot of tracks.

N++ (NPLUSPLUS)

N++ (NPLUSPLUS)

I played this game for over 60 hours on PS4, getting every achievement (currently the same achievements on both platforms).

Skip this first paragraph if you want to get straight to pros, cons, and opinion

N++ is a simple in concept minimalistic 2d platformer. Guide your character, the ninja, avoiding various traps, obstactles, and fall damage in search of riches. (gold coins scattered throughout levels). The ninja can wall jump and move in any direction. Every level has at least one door switch that opens a door to the end of the level. Navigate to that open door to finish a level. There are between 2000 and 2500 total official levels in three modes called Co-op, race, and solo mode ranging from easy/tutorial scaling up to the extremely challenging. All of these modes consist of episodes that have a pack of 5 levels together. As time passes in a level the score counts down. When that score hits 0 the ninja explodes and must start the level over. The time is additive in every episode. Collecting gold adds time. After beating an episode, it is possible to select levels individually. There are global leaderboards for every individual level and episode as well as friend leaderboards and replays for every best personal score. There is an in-game editor where players can make and play community made levels.

N has been a series I’ve followed since around 2006, where I would secretly play it during class. The game was pretty special back then since it was made in flash, yet it was so well made and content rich that it could of passed as a AAA title at the time. Flash forward to 2016 with the release of N++ and it still holds strong as being one of the best platformers out there.

N++ is the best version of N, being the most polished and content rich of the series, but what makes this game truely special is something that has existed since the first version of N, that being its very well executed movement mechanics. N was a game that focused purely on platforming, there’s basically no story, no abilities, no player gimmicks, no killing enemies (they’re are plenty of enemies to kill you however). It’s just you and your ability to run, jump and wall jump.
