The Chatters Show Free Version is not a game, it’s a software application that’s erroneously been uploaded to Steam as a game. It’s designed as a free/demo that allows Twitch streamers to make quizzes or something.

Regardless, not a game, so I cannot recommend this to gamers.

Fog Factory - Game Maker

I expected much more. This Game-Maker sadly suffers from a lack of ambition and creative thought. The UI design is lacking, the audio rarely works and the game is incredibly imbalanced. Hopefully in the future this can be improved, although that may take a lot of work.

RED HOT VENGEANCE

RED HOT VENGEANCE

This is an amazing game with an epic soundtrack, there’s only 10 levels and 30 challenges but there’s also new game+ once you’ve finished the normal game (which is the normal game but much harder). Additionally every level has 4 badges you can earn for them: No Mercy (kill all enemies), No Death (self explanatory), Speedrun (beat the par time) and the badge for finding the secret (this badge is only visible in level select). The difficulty curve throughout the levels is a bit wonky but it’s still very enjoyable to play. In my opinion all the levels are very replayable and there’s also user levels if you get bored of the campaign.

RED HOT VENGEANCE serves almost as Hotline Miami with a camera angled differently, and with a radically different style. That’s not a complaint, however. The gameplay feels fun and incredibly smooth given the lack of need for the best graphics. The level editor is incredibly easy to use, and allows for a lot of unique creations (though not at the same level as the main game). As to the game itself, it’s essentially Hotline Miami’s gameplay combined with a John Wick plot on extra testosterone.

I do have some issues, however - I personally found that the level editor, though great to use, faced many crashing issues, and like I described earlier, the plot felt a little questionable, especially with a weird contrast of drawn art with the minimalist style of the rest of the game. I felt like its Hotline Miami inspiration also made me lose some respect in that the opening level similarly takes place in a train station.

Edit -

8 April 2018 (Less than two weeks following the start of early access)

  • Thorough developer support in discussions - bug fixes, suggestions, proper communication.

  • Already numerous suggestions implemented in build 0.99142 - triple jump, jump variation

settings, player friction physics settings, and more..

  • The bug fixes are coming quickly, within days.

  • First roadmap for suggested features tackles roughly 25 features - all planned for introduction by end of next week. Progress is moving quickly and game is being well stress tested.

I have purchase PlataGo! recently and I am really happy about what it has to offer. Its an early access game / engine so I am aware that they are still bugs and even some basic things to add. However I value a few things in this early state:

  • Responsive developer, the software is often updated and the dev is on the forums help and answering questions

  • There is a lot of stuff added already. There are a very large number of possible elements to add to your platforming game for which you can customize many parameters. This, together with the different graphics packs (you can add your own or download more from the workshop) ensures that you can make your game unique

Stealth Bastard Deluxe

Stealth Bastard Deluxe

Stealth Bastard Deluxe was one of the early games out of the Greenlight gate - prior to it becoming an open door three miles wide - and it shows how decent some of those first Greenlight games were. This was made in GameMaker Studio, but you can scarcely tell as the inventiveness on display here is outstanding, both in terms of art assets used and the gameplay itself. On the face of it, it’s just another 2D puzzle-platformer in a market awash with titles from that genre, but this one has something a little different. The aesthetic is dark and brooding with a sharp sense of humour, suiting the setting well…and the soundtrack is similarly appropriate. But the gameplay is, as ever, the meat and potatoes.

SHORT VERSION

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys spending weeks on end figuring out then practicing how to complete Rubik’s Cube in 40 seconds, then SBD would be right up your street. But for anyone else, it would be very difficult to have a satisfying experience of SBD beyond say, Round 3, and I’d recommend not bothering with it.

DETAILED VERSION

Stealth Bastard Deluxe (SBD) is not a stealth game … stealth is just one minor aspect of a multi-faceted game, and the only real purpose of stealth in this case is to avoid being zapped, and consequently having to restart from the last checkpoint.

NUMTATE

NUMTATE

december 2021 edit: the 2.0 update revamped the whole game, so I edited the review to reflect the changes.

numtate is a portmanteau of number and rotate, and sure enough, it’s about rotating numbers so they add up to the one in the middle, called a core. luckily, not much math skill is required, as the core keeps track of the current situation, no need to constantly count what’s around. the core number is the minimum, not the exact goal, though most of the time you won’t have the luxury of going over.

Gunpoint

Gunpoint

Gunpoint is a sidescrolling stealth platformer with smooth jazz, guns and cool hats.

I’ve never been a gigantic fan of platformers, but this game is a big, big exception in my library, and I felt I needed to address this by updating my review in 2020. I’m going to reinforce this by saying that I have MANY more hours than steam says, and it provided me with endless entertainment on a couple of bus rides half way across the country, and that says something!

Gunpoint is unique in that it’s stealthy gameplay extends much further than ‘sneak around, shoot guy’ with some pretty complicated puzzles made by the in-game wiretapping feature “Crosslink”, which leaves every level open ended, akin to something like Metal Gear Solid V in a completely new medium.

-Quick Review-

Gunpoint is an indie puzzle game with loose ties to “stealth” and “technology”, Gunpoint was developed by Suspicious Developments and released 2013.

-Detailed breakdown review-

Story: The story is all in written format, somedays I feel like reading all that is writen in a video game, other times I see a chunk of text and think “I don’t really care” and skip right into the mission.

Gunpoint lets you skip dialogue and jump right into the puzzle solving action if you feel so inclined, however the story is quite well written. You’re a detective and have multiple choices for interaction with your clients. (Naturally I was as condescending and insulting as possible – the reactions were very much worth it!)
