Legends of Aethereus

Legends of Aethereus

Legends of Aethereus is a behind-the-player-character, action role playing game set in the land of Aethereus. Do quests handed out in the hub city. Marvel at the gorgeous art design, then feel dissappointed at the lack of opportunities for interaction. Buy and sell crafting material and weapons and armour at traders. Or craft weapons and armour at the blacksmith (crafting material can also be collected during quests). Play one of two classes - one focused on brute strength and the other one deploying devices (e.g. mines, turrets, etc.). Develop special moves (called a skill tree in-game, but it really isn’t). Use a complicated but accessible combat system in satisfying combat against (admittedly cookie-cutter) foes. Play with up to three friends. Enter your character(s) in the arena to earn more gold and materials. Outfit your apartment (a feature that isn’t fully developed at the moment). Generally have fun (yes!). Be amazed at the game’s potential. Then visit the forums (or do that before buying) and lament the lack of updates.

Back when Legends of Æthereus was crowdfunded, I didn’t manage to fund it. However I bought it for the full price on their website shortly hereafter - only because of Linux support.

At that time Legends of Æthereus was in an alpha state and hardly playable on my hardware at that time. I did manage to get the initial feel and concept of where the game was heading, and I promised to return when some of the more game-breaking bugs was fixed and I upgraded my hardware.

Fast forward 3 months and I had finally purchased up to date hardware and decided to give Legends of Æthereus another go.

Turn-based strategies. It’s hard not to love them. Especially if you’re old enough to remember the genre at its best, when every new Battle Isle game used to make a huge impact. Battle Worlds: Kronos wants you to remember about those times. Unfortunately, it fails to be entertaining enough. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

First of all, the game looks surprisingly cute, while being both nostalgic (even though this game clearly tries to be some sort of Battle Isle spiritual successor, visually it reminds me a lot of 1995 cross-platform game called Return Fire) and fresh. In other words, visually, it’s pretty much exactly what you may want from modern TBS. Nothing groundbreaking, but just good enough to look fine on modern systems.

Mighty No. 9

Mighty No. 9

Okay so, at the time of writing this I have 3 bosses down.

Yes, I did back this game. Yes I did play the beta.

I won’t deny this game has a lot of controversy around it. But I’m gonna try to stick to the game itself.

Is it bad? No. Could it be better? yeah, but it’s still satisfying.

Is it worth the hate it gets? No, I would say not.

Most importantly, is the game fun? Yes.

I strongly recommend people play, and I mean actually play, not just the 0.2 hour times we’re seeing in the reviews, and form your own opinion.

Mighty No.9 should be a textbook case of how to not destroy the expectations of everyone who was craving this game. There hasn’t been a Megaman or Megaman X game in years, this should have been a cakewalk for this team to do and other studios have shown they can get very close to getting that Megaman feel. I’ll get this out of the way first- I’m not going to go into the gripes about the Kickstarter campaign, or the long wait, or all the other campaigns that were started before this way finished- they have been discussed to death already and you can check from other sources if you still wish to support the game by buying it.

Open Mod

Open Mod

Open Mod is a free-to-play, tactical first person shooter that, for the time being, revolves around the bank robbery game mode. Being a team of two, we focused our attention on the game mechanics and customizability, having as a main goal providing our players the opportunity to personalize their experience on as many levels as possible.

The gameplay consists of, as expected, a bank robbery, where one team must rob the bank and escape with the money through certain routes, while the military must eliminate them before they do so.

it’s 2 years later and essentially nothing has changed… key personel in the company that were working on the game left because their contracts were not renewed, and insider whispers are that nobody is working on it anymore… the company denies that, yet nothing has been added or changed. Instead, they started making yet another microtransaction laden game for IOS, which, not only tries to push you to spend real money, but also has an obnoxious character that gets in your way frequently to try to get you to watch advertisements. 22cans… you are dead to me!

GODUS Beta 2.1 Review Update August 2014

8 months after my first Review of this game, I have given Godus another 20 hours of game play in the latest 2.1 Patch.

The worst parts of the old Godus Alpha have been fully realised, Godus 2.1 is now an iOS game and the freemium model mechanics are fully in place.

After 20 hours in the 2.1 build I can say that there is no game here, just a count down mechanic, followed by a countdown mechanic, everything else you do in Godus leads you to a bigger countdown.

Chaos Reborn

Chaos Reborn

TL;DR: I enjoy this game immensely. This review summarizes some reasons why.

THE THEME: At the end of the 14th century, Earth shattered into innumerable fragments in a magic-instigated apocalypse. Powerful magic allows fragments of Earth to endure as habitable, island realms scattered between planes of existence. From a planet called Limbo, wizards and gods engage in eternal conflict over who controls the many, surviving realms of old Earth. Each realm holds the promise of ancient artifacts, lore, and power to fuel the ambitions of wizards and gods alike. It is a feudal, dystopic society of magic users.

Note: I deleted my old review because with so many updates since last Octobers release, it was simply too out of date to warrant an edit. So here is a new one, reviewing the game as of V1.10, released today!

Chaos Reborn is a hex based, turn based, card based strategy game where you are a wizard and you have to kill the other wizards. This is done by casting spells which can either summon creatures to attack other creatures and wizards, cast magic attack spells to kill almost anything, or create growth spells that hinders mobility. You’ll soon learn that different creatures have different strengths and weaknesses, far too many to list here but you’ll learn them.

DG2: Defense Grid 2

DG2: Defense Grid 2

I… Love… This… Game!

Differences with DG1: which is better?

Most people prefer DG1 over DG2 for a couple of reasons:

  • scoring in DG1 is a lot more straightforward

  • runs alot better (albeit also lower quality)

  • was way more community driven (more on that later)

  • the game modes are alot more straightforward

I am one of the very few who regards DG2 as the best TD ever. It’s partly a sentimental thing, I started playing these games after DG2 released, and at that moment there was a group that competed in a weekly challenge. That sense of competition lifts a game so very high. It saddens me to say that the community is only a handful of people, which just keep on going making maps. The community for DG1 is slightly bigger.

Defense Grid 2 improves so much on the original, it’s amazing.

I’ll start off with the sole negative and that is the game sorely needs a “mute” button so you don’t have to listen to the AI’s. I’m OK with listening to them the 1st, 2nd or even 3rd time, but when I’m banging my head against the proverbial wall, I finally just gave up & put my headphones on my desk instead of listening to them while I’m trying Level 12 incursion for the 14th time.

Now that I have THAT out of the way, this game is just simply unbelievably awesome.

Street Legal Racing: Redline v2.3.1

This game was a wildcard for me. Last year I picked this up and dived right in because, well, I’m a gearhead and I like to break things. But at the time, the game was in such a frustratingly unstable state that I’d get a game crash every 5-10 minutes. With that said, I didn’t pick it up for several months.

Several months later, the devs have been hard at work to fix some of the many problems that lay within previous versions of the game, and now it’s mostly playable. So now, I get a crash every 40 minutes-1 hour. That’s quite a marginal improvement!

SLRR is a game about building, repairing and modifying cars. If you like cars or want an in-depth understanding on how cars work, buy this game.

The game starts by giving you a garage, a small sum of money and the ability to visit a used car lot/salvage yard to purchase your first wreck of a car.

Working on cars is the core element of the game. Vehicles are incredibly detailed with dozens of swappable components. You’ll spend about 70% of your time in the garage trying to make your car go as fast as you can afford. The remaining 30% is spent on actually driving your car around a GTA-esque city, earning money by doing street races during the day and drag races at night (hint: drag races are more profitable by several orders of magnitude), running away from police if they try to pull you over as well as trying to keep the parts on your car that you spent the last 30 minutes saving up for from falling off.

Takedown: Red Sabre

Takedown: Red Sabre

Takedown: Red Sabre is a SWAT esque first person shooter where you go through multiple levels with your team.

Story:

Takedown: Red Sabre doesn’t really have a story, there’s multiple levels that have no connections whatsoever. Levels range from clearing a radio station in the mountains, or saving hostages in an overtaken container ship. They give you a debrief of what needs to be done and then you are thrown in the mission. That’s about it honestly, so if you want a story to go along with your swat escapades you’re gonna have to keep looking somewhere else.

Takedown: Red Sabre * 5/10

Essentially a very high potential tactical FPS which unfortunately is abandoned in an alpha stage at best. Buy and play at your own risk.

INTRO. What is Takedown: Red Sabre about?

Takedown Red Sabre is an abandoned attempt to revive the tactical FPS genre that is best represented by games like SWAT 4 or Rainbow six.. NO, NOT SIEGE. Rainbow six 3: Raven Shield. I say it’s an abandoned attempt and not a failed attempt because that’s what happened, and that’s what it is. Serellan llc was a one man driven company with different collaborators that abandoned the project along the way. This dude abandoned development for TD:RS and started developing Epsilon, another abandoned attempt of the same genre.

Short version: Don’t believe reviews older than March 2015. The game is better, prettier, and more stable than ever before. It still might not be for everybody, but it’s worth a look.

UPDATE: August 2016 - Updated spell effects, all new UI, somewhat improved AI, and generally very attractive and stable performance. This is how the game should have released, and more updates are on the way. I can recommend it still.

Long version:

I’ve been playing since Early Access, but wanted to wait until the last of the Kickstarter DLC was released before writing a review. In the meantime, I’ve watched a nearly unplayably buggy game get lots of fixes and polish from the developers, and now I feel like it would be fair to give it a balanced review. APRIL 25, 2015

As a Tabletop/War Gamer in general and especially a Warmachine/Hordes player, someone who followed WMD when it first announced a Warmachine game and a backer of the later Kickstarter-Project I truly hate to say that I can’t recommend this game. The developers had enought time to fix some major bugs or design flaws, but they didn’t. Performance issues are still at hand: if your game kept running for a respectable amount of time without a crash, than that just means a crash is a soon-to-be occasion. Not a “possible” occasion, a crash -will- occure. The UI is quite obnoxious, but usable, and keeps looking like a developing kit.
