Bloom: Labyrinth

Bloom: Labyrinth

In its current state, I just can’t recommend it. The controls are very awkward and hard to use. It would benefit from a more fleshed out tutorial. Most of it is written in the journal, which would be really nice if it was easier to use. The screens we got from Memories looked really nice but in this game, some of the assets just feel… off, like they don’t fit the rest of the design style. The music is right up my alley though, and I’d love to hear more of it.

This is a smaller project they did to help fund the game that we actually backed in like 2013. The game was supposed to come out in 2015 but hit setbacks. They spent all the money and the team fell apart. At this point, it’s been so many years that you might as well give up and see it as money that just disappeared. Between this project and the whole Epic hijacking Kickstarter games, I’m unlikely to ever fund one again.

Patchman vs. Red Circles

Patchman vs. Red Circles

The game is a little hidden gem, especially if you like some shrouded mysteries with

! dystopian theme. Despite it, while the game is funny and suitable to all ages, don’t mistake it for your usual casual game! It actually have more in common with Super Meat Boy with some levels being ridiculously hard, especially later down the road. Sure, it is beatable, but if you crank the difficulty to hard or aim for some achievements, some levels will get you annoyed until you finally beat it ;).

I took a chance on this one, which popped up in my discovery queue. I can now say it’s my favorite game in the “stealth farming” genre, and I can recommend it to those who are looking for something weird and endearing. The graphics style reminds me of good old DOS games or early Windows 95 ones such as Lemmings Paintball. The soundtrack is excellently chosen to complement the style.

If you’re put off by stories about freeing the brainwashed masses, ones named “Sheeple” for that matter, I wouldn’t worry about it. This game doesn’t hit you over the head with some obnoxious message along those lines. Instead it draws you in and charms you, taking the timeless values of care for the environment, healthy eating, and not being controlled by the media or machines, and presents them in the most playful way. This game makes me want to eat more oranges.

La-Mulana 2

La-Mulana 2

9/10. Very solid. Highly recommended. But it’s not as good as La-Mulana 1. Let’s look at it, shall we?

First thing you should know is that there is exactly one other game like La-Mulana (and the original freeware La-Mulana, but we’re talking about the remake), and that game is La-Mulana 2. So there’s no alternative, really. La-Mulana is a brutal puzzle-metroidvania, and until La-Mulana 2 came along, La-Mulana was the only brutal puzzle-metroidvania. La-Mulana 2 features easily 100 hours of exploration and puzzle-solving. My in-game completion time was over 106 hours, which is a lot. I like to describe La-Mulana 1 as a cross between a puzzle hunt and a kick to the face. La-Mulana 2 is somewhat less dependent on masochism, which is why 1 was better.

La-Mulana 2 is a worthy sucessor to the first game, but it shows some rough edges that will hopefully be adressed in future updates. It does improve some areas, but in others falls short.

+ Positives:

  • Platforming and contronl over your character is much better than La-Mulana 1. You have much more control mid air and level design takes this in consideration. You can also grab from stairs during a jump. Can also crouch to evade stuff and use in puzzles. This is a big improvement over the rigid controls of the original.

Son of Nor

Son of Nor

First it’s important to note, that this title is the result of a Kickstarter project with a rather small budget. The developers put a lot of effort to make the most out of it, so it can be easy to forget that it’s just a very small indie game and should be considered as such.

“Son of Nor” is a combination of adventure, action and puzzle game built around an unique combat mechanic: Instead of using normal (or abnormal) weapons, you command the world and the elements around you using your extraordinary telekinetic and elemental-magical powers.

Ripping boulders out of walls and smashing your foes with them is soo much fun.

I have played the early access for a few hours now. The game has an original fantasy story and Zelda-like puzzle dungeons which I enjoy. But the game’s core experience is its physics based combat. You raise and lower the ground, you throw stuff at enemies, you throw enemies at enemies… you get the point. It’s a lot of fun and very rewarding. Combat can get out of hand in larger battles. But it hasn’t frustrated me yet. Simply reload and retry - I usually manage well the second time around.

Dwarrows

Dwarrows

I first found out about Dwarrows by watching YouTube Lets Plays before it was even released. I bought it as soon as it came out (payed full price) and, so far, I am enjoying it just as much as I thought I would. If you play games like My Time in Portia or Ni no Kuni II, then I believe you will love Dwarrows. So what do I like about the game?

Likes

I really enjoy the slightly simplistic styling of the game. It isn’t hyper realistic, but more of a cartoony (is that a word?) feeling, that adds it’s own charm to the game play.

Real player with 78.9 hrs in game

Oh my. Dwarrows is a little masterpiece.

Here are some notes on happiness:

  • Visual: The wood elves reminded me of Sesame Street characters – a bit of Bert and Ernie and Grover.

  • Audio: Enjoyable. :) I liked to run into a group of bluebirds just to hear them tweeting as they scattered. I liked the piped-in suspenseful mini-melodies when I was trying to solve a puzzle.

  • Travel: This game handled fast travel really well. Having three characters to port around could have been a hassle, but instead so many workarounds were provided: teleport scrolls in inventory (with options to transport one character or all three), teleport fountains at puzzles (to bring all three to help), and teleport stone rings (for one or three). Plus it was nice to have the three characters spread around the map sometimes – I often left Gloia in town to build, while the other two ran around to explore. Really well done.

Cute lil game! it is still in early access but it’s got potentials. Really like the level design and the cute artwork. Story is simple yet intriguing, hope there is more about the black dog’s backstory. The controls could’ve been improved, and the attack/hurt animation transition is a bit stiff. Overall I would recommend this game and looking forward to more chapters!

Last Labyrinth(ラストラビリンス)

Last Labyrinth(ラストラビリンス)

Alright, I just finished every ending, I’ll do my best to edit this into an unbiased review.

First things first, the ‘endings’ are only endings in name. You’ll get your first ‘ending’ only a few hours into the game, having explored only a tiny fraction of the game’s rooms and puzzles, and each ending shows you a piece of the storyline underlying Last Labyrinth.

Pros:

+Katia is adorable, and while the game could have been played on a flat monitor, there’s something about looking a 3d Katia in the eyes and feeling like she’s present in the room with you that makes it 100x more stressful when she’s in danger.

IT WAS AMAZING!!

It really had the psychological layer of fear and I loved everything the game had to offer!

The feeling so helplessness as well as having command of the situation. Lovely contrasts executed well, together with the irie atmosphere!

Maybe it is a bit pricey but I am really glad I bought it!

I just wished the game was longer! I really want more of this game even if I would have to pay more for more content.

Update: I take back that is was short. Found more content if I kept playing after they showed the credits. There seem to be a lot more behind everything than I first thougt and I want to know all of it!
