I’ve wiped my old review clean and am going to be much more concise in this one - having played both the Steam and Switch versions of the game now, I can firmly say that if you plan to play this game at all, the Switch version is the way to go - though I would skip out on both. It has less RNG bullshit in it and the controls simply make more sense and it has overall less bugs, however…

Upon a second playthrough of Jin Conception (once on Steam, once on Switch), I can confidently say that… while there is some good here, the cons just definitely outweigh the bad. Even knowing the answers of who is friend and foe, there is virtually no way in the game to actually deduce this naturally. I had the benefit of speaking with the developer during my playthrough and was able to speak with him afterwards to try and clear up some misconceptions and unfortunately the conversation only proved to clarify what I feared: the story is in fact incomplete, with much of it simply not in the game.

Arelite Core

Arelite Core

Arelite Core. My review!

Story: Traditional RPG with terrifyingly powerful supervillain who wants to bring about utter destruction of the world. You play a blacksmith who has made up his mind to journey across the world seeking out all other Master Blacksmiths to learn from - you want to become the greatest Blacksmith who ever lived. Oh, and it just so happens the most powerful sword in history is needed to kill the supervillain and guess what Blacksmiths do? CREATE SWORDS! Along the way cities are razed, friends die, levels are gained, and fun is had.

Arelite Core is the story of a humble blacksmith named Karden, who over the course of a journey to learn more becomes a hero. Very much like Die Hard, Karden does not set out to be a hero but takes up the mantle when no one else will. The story is very robust with many twists and turns.

The gameplay harkens back to jrpg’s of yore while fixing some of the old mistakes. There are generous skills to invest points in and weapons to forge. The relics you find can set off an eureka moments and totally change how you configure your party and their approach to battle.

COLLECTION of SaGa FINAL FANTASY LEGEND

COLLECTION of SaGa FINAL FANTASY LEGEND

Very solid classics JRPGs from the early days, no color, no hand holding, If you are fans of old JRPGs, don’t have a Gameboy and the games on hand I would greatly recommend giving this collection a try. A pretty unique combination of multiple concept rarely seen together in the same game. Swords, Magic, Technology and Monster all mixed together remind me of Phantasy Star. Each game are 10-15 hours or so depending on how well you handle the mechanics.

Final Fantasy Legend: Very rough game, you pretty much have to grind at the beginning and the end game jump in difficulty but the rest of the game is very fun. Having a monster in your party that can evolve depending on the enemy you kill and eat is a very fun mechanic. Weapons having a number of uses will be familiar to fans of Fire Emblem and I must say it works pretty well. Story and tower climbing concept are pretty simple but there are a twist or two.

I bought this game since it brings back memories and if you compare the price of all 3 back in those day and now, this is definitely cheaper. Only get this is you were a fan of this game.

Reason why I wouldn’t recommend this game is that it is simply a port over, no improvements whatsoever. Pre-ordering this gets some wallpaper but we don’t get everything that is in the promo video like the coloured versions of the bosses etc.

My controller didn’t work with this

Would be good if they had settings to remove the background wallpaper. it’s just taking up screen space pointlessly

Legends of Mathmatica²: Under the Shadow of Certainty

Legends of Mathmatica²: Under the Shadow of Certainty

Legends of Mathmatica²: Under the Shadow of Certainty is a humorous, retro style JRPG, featuring a 16-bit aesthetic, an active time battle system, old school puzzle dungeons, and a comedic storyline that is filled with word play and genre savvy silliness.

You’ll guide the protagonist, Hiro, as he travels the land of Mathmatica in search of the man who destroyed Six O’ Clock Town, Hiro’s home town. Like any good JRPG protagonist, our Hiro will gather a band of heroes and misfits to his cause, save a few lives and complete a couple errands along the way (Those cats won’t walk themselves!). And while our Hiro may not be the sharpest sword in the armory, his adventure savvy intuition grants him an uncanny knack for getting out of (and into) all sorts of crazy situations.

OCTOPATH TRAVELER™

OCTOPATH TRAVELER™

The most important thing I can say about Octopath Traveler is that it can restore a childhood-like imagination in you… if you let it. To get the most out of this game, you have to be willing to suspend your disbelief and fill in some blanks with your own thoughts. Don’t rush to complete it mindlessly… take your time with it, and explore at your own pace. If you let yourself be immersed into its world, both inside and outside the game (more on that later), Octopath Traveler will take you on a truly memorable journey. One that will feel like your own.

Wow, this is a hard game to review, particularly as you have to give it either a thumbs up or a thumbs down when all is said and done.

Okay, full disclosure: I played this during a mammoth replay session of the Legend of Heroes (Trails) games, in preparation for the release of the Geofront Zero translation, and Cold Steel III to hit stores. As a result, that may bias my opinion of this game, as I was used to a certain quality in storytelling, character development, and the like.

I bought Octopath Traveller hoping to be transported back to the golden era of Final Fantasy - ie Final Fantasy VI - but with the sort of QoL improvements that time has granted us.

Romancing SaGa 2™

Romancing SaGa 2™

I’m finding it difficult to review Romancing SaGa 2. I ended up loving it, but only after I had read up on some key information about the game mechanics that would have taken my dumb ass forever to figure out without help, potentially long enough for me to quit early. I’m going to go through a couple of the things that I found to be important knowledge, so this is going to be a pretty ranty review.

The music is excellent. In my 150+ hours of playing this game I never got sick of hearing it.

The story felt a bit difficult to stay too invested in. While the open nature of the game and the generation /inheritance system is unique for its time and are good gameplay elements, the sheer number and varying lifespans of each emperor/party member means there’s not a lot to follow on a personal level (which may have been the intent?).

tl;dr SaGa games were flawed, epic, open ended, obscure gems way ahead of their time that few westerners got to play back in the days and that you should absolutely try if you’re into (J)RPGs.

My first encounter with them was in the mid nineties with Romancing SaGa 3. Coming from the likes of Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI, I was hella confused by it. Most of the world was freely accessible from the start and I kept going from villages to towns and from ships to islands into dark caves and dungeons which inevitably led to what seemed like invincible mighty opponents.

First, let me give the obligatory “this game is not for everyone” warning. It is dated, and even if it weren’t, it betrays a lot of JRPG genre conventions (as we understood them in the West). I can’t help but make comparisons to Final Fantasy when talking about this game, because ultimately what we’re working with is Sakaguchi and Kawazu’s development styles. Final Fantasy is very character-focused, whereas SaGa is very world-focused. Characters have stories, but they’re just particular lenses through which to experience the world. In Final Fantasy, you leverage strengths and weaknesses to survive long gauntlet-style battles. In Romancing SaGa, battles are about who can cause more damage to the other side faster. In Final Fantasy, character growth is mostly decided, and at most you are given some choice about specializing in the class the game shoehorns you into. In SaGa, characters have some basic starting attributes that decide what they might be best at, but ultimately how you choose to grow them is up to you. In Final Fantasy, there are multiple tiers of spells that are all variations on attack, support, or heal. In SaGa, spells are oddities and they tend to become more powerful with the skill of the caster; It’s possible that you’ll only use 2 or 3 spells for each character out of the 30 or so spells available. In Final Fantasy, random encounters occur if you make a bad roll on any given step, whereas in SaGa they are visible and dodging them is a big part of the strategy. In Final Fantasy, running away is a risky move. In SaGa, it is easy and frequently smart to do.

I’m going to have to caveat this one to hell and back, in spite of personally loving this title.

Romancing SaGa 3 is one of the standout titles in a long-running RPG franchise that the average person is going to absolutely hate - the series is known for having opaque mechanics, obtuse plotting and event flags, occasionally wonky level progression making some fights arbitrarily difficult, and a general lack of solid narratives, and RS is no exception. However, fans of classic JRPGs (specifically classic Final Fantasy and the PS1 SaGa offerings) will at the very least find this to be one hell of an interesting curio from Square’s SNES period, even if it doesn’t quite live up to the company’s more famous pedigrees.
