Stouthollow Tales

Stouthollow Tales

Stouthollow Tales is an old-school JRPG inspired game about managing an item shop. Upgrade and customize your shop with your own style. Scour the land harvesting resources in an effort to expand your inventory. Ally with powerful guilds to unlock access to hundreds of craftable items. You will balance stocking the shelves with the products you harvest and craft with discovering the mystery of the world that surrounds you. The town of Stouthollow may seem quaint, but the Tales you weave will be extraordinary.

Prove Yourself

Prove to the town of Stouthollow that you’re worthy of their praise.

Get lost in the hollow

While Stouthollow is quaint and peaceful on the surface you’ll have to work to uncover hidden truths and ancient mysteries that are hidden just beneath the surface of this rustic town.

Craft Everything

Spend your days harvesting from the land or working with locals to gather, craft and sell hundreds of items.

TL;DR: Recommended ONLY when on sale, maybe around 30% off or more. It doesn’t worth it in full price.

Pros:

  • Cute girls.

  • Good moving image H-scenes.

  • Good optimization unlike other H-game on steam that use Unity as the game engine. I often found H-game that use Unity will gobble up your cpu to 100%, but not with this game.

Cons:

  • The SLG part are very lacking, mainly you will use your money to cook the menu then use the remaining money to increase the stats of the girls, increase your manager level, and customize your cafe in that order. You don’t really need to put much thought to play the SLG part which is the main point of the game and this is a problem.

The Emerald Tablet

The Emerald Tablet

If you’re looking for a alchemy game that brings the fun of trial and error from combining stuff, be aware that this game does NOT provide you the adequate tools to do so.

The gaming mechanism is made quite shabby and lack depth. Combination comes either with npc telling you the complete recipe or you get nothing. Several specific mats appear only once in the entire game, but you still need it repetitively for other recipes.

The foe becomes unreasonably strong in late game (from 3rd year) and balance become completely broken.

As a huge fan of the Atelier series, I really wanted to like this game, but it really needs a manual or in-game database. There doesn’t seem to be any way to discover recipes outside of trial-and-error in free mixing mode.

Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story

Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story

I am a huge fan of the Valthirian Arc flash games on Kongregate, and I will sink hours into them, creating stories for my students and being really eager to see how they grow and evolve- I truly love those games. So with flash no longer being supported after this year, I was thrilled to discover I could buy the next iteration on steam and show my support for the developer.

Coming in with this high expectation, I was deeply disappointed. Playing through the game, you can see the seeds of fantastic ideas- a Game of Thrones style division of kingdoms, diverse maps and styles of missions, unique student classes and trees. However, none of these ideas come to fruition, and are stunted by a number of bugs in the game itself. There’s no personality to the kingdoms until the ending cutscenes- and no bonuses or reason to ally with any of them other than using their missions for leveling your students. The maps become highly predictable and tedious, and the random generator was constantly giving me strength based students - and without individually clicking on each recruit, no way to scroll through recruit options- so my teams were terribly unbalanced. Which, I discovered, didn’t matter at all, so long as my students had high level weapons, which I could use to artificially boosts student stats in their weak area (You’re dex based? Take a dagger that adds 200 strength). At the same time, I had no idea of those stats affected them (why does a Knight or Scout need MP? Does Dex boost attack speed for all classes? Does strength boost my Mage’s attack power, or only their intelligence?). Moreover, besides their special ability, I don’t understand the differences (if any) between the top tiers of students- why would a paladin be more useful versus arc draconus of the same level? The difficulty systems means nothing after the first chapter, because one or two star missions can be just as difficult as four stars, which can also be pitifully easy. This is frustrating because when I (am FORCED to, as opposed to previous systems where you could stockpile Fame for the next requirement) graduate my high level students, it’s really hard to get my new apprentices up to a workable level when the only options for grinding exp is the two “training” missions that don’t award XP for completion (and you earn a pitiful amount for defeating every creature on the map). These are things I could learn to live with, even enjoy, but the game itself is terribly bugging. If my students level up on the mission, there’s a good chance they glitch and cannot attack or interact with items, although I can control and move them, which makes the game think I can still finish the quest when I can’t. Several times the game crashed when I loaded it and started specific missions. Many of the arrows that allow you to scroll through menus don’t actually work, and I have no way of scrolling through my buildings, rooms, or floors. The list goes on.

I backed this on Kickstarter and they delivered a decent product. It’s not a terrible game. It’s just middle of the road and you could probably be playing something better.

The game play loop has you level up heroes, make a skill choice or two, and then change to an advanced class and start leveling up again. Every “semester” you’re supposed to graduate at least 1 student in exchange for getting a ton of money and “fame” which allows you access to the advanced classes. As the game goes on, a character’s max level for different classes gets higher which gives them access to more abilities within that class. You’re encouraged to graduate characters at max level, so you need to be earning your graduates a lot more experience as the game goes on.

VirtuaCreature is a title that pays homage to the days of tomagotchi. It was built through an older flash engine so there are some limitations, but that doesn’t make it a bad game. You start with a blob. From there you can evolve it four ways. From there you can evolve it 8 ways. Evolutions are dependent on the way you train them, how happy they are, and what you feed them. There are 21 different creatures in the game. It’s nice that you have more than one save slot so you can try different evolution paths at the same time.

Marenian Tavern Story: Patty and the Hungry God

Marenian Tavern Story: Patty and the Hungry God

It is fun, but the sort of grind that only those of us who find repetition soothing while we think of other things can enjoy. If you’re really into hitting buttons and knitting at the same time, this is for you!

Though, good luck without using a recipe guide. And, I mean this with all sincerity, screw the random jewel drops. You can tell it was designed with a cash shop in mind…

Story is cute and unobtrusive, and I love the characters, though. Meandering as this was, I hope it was of help.

This is an entire RPG based around one cooking minigame and I’ve played so, so many hours of it. If you’re a completionist, this is the game for you. Collect every obscure ingredient, solve every character’s goofy anime problems, fight every weird monster, find every recipe or work them out yourself. All it takes is time. I love it. I’m not even sure why. It’s so satisfying to figure out recipes and collect fantasy meats and marine grasses and make a million types of tiny pixellated sushi. What’s banana liquor? What’s carapaccio? I don’t know but I’ve made both and they sell like hotcakes. I think you get to cook with dragon eggs later in the game and I’m genuinely excited. I’m gonna make such a fancy dragon egg sandwich, you guys. I love this game. What the hell.

Karma City Police

Karma City Police

After playing all the content available in Early Access twice, I asked myself if I should do an analysis on the available content and if I should recommend the game to others and the answer is absolutely yes!

The pixelart of Karma City Police is very beautiful and crafted. Impressive how only a developer can deliver a competent job.

I really enjoyed the two main aspects of the game: resource management, where you must make your decisions wisely to take care of the population of Karma City, and the pinball mechanics in the clashes that makes a perfect contrast to what was presented previously, moments of more action.

Real player with 2.3 hrs in game

Shaping up to be a really good game. Only took me about 15 minutes to complete (I forgot to exit, hence the hour and a half playtime). I enjoyed my time though, the premise of mixing a pinball battle system with the 911 operator role is an innovative one and I think will be really cool once it’s more fleshed out. A “shake” feature would be nice during battle, with maybe a tilt feature too so you don’t abuse it too much to hit your target. Some of the text overflows from the boxes, and there are some grammatical/spelling errors (off the top of my head “you loose” comes to mind). Native gamepad support would be great too, or at least the ability to remap the controls. I played using JoyToKey though and it worked fine. I enjoyed both aspects of the game, so really my only complaint is that it’s too short! Hope to see this updated soon.

Nelke & the Legendary Alchemists ~Ateliers of the New World~ / ネルケと伝説の錬金術士たち ~新たな大地のアトリエ~

When I first started playing it - I was clueless to what all was going on. That being said I was ecstatic about this being a hardworking bosslady with NO time countdown like the previous games had been… ummm yeah. 6 hours later - I realized after my advisor came in my office and told me that he was taking me back to the capitol for not reaching my task given, THAT IT WAS REAL. Needless to say I was very disappointed to know this was in fact cruel on time management. The second time around I knew not to mess about; starting production and gathering as soon as I could and it made it a little bit easier being prepared for the future goal tasks when they unveiled.

This is my first game of the Atelier series.

I saw recommendations of Atelier games but never tryed one because they are always so expensive.

But i have to say its worth the money.

Characters: 10/10

Lovely Characters and everyone of them with their own little story.

Music: 10/10

It is really relaxing to listen to this music while manage the production etc.

Alchemy: 5/10

It´s not that advanced but for new players to the series its really good to understand the base mechanic of the whole system.
