What can I say about this game? Seriously having a hard time articulating a detailed analysis because my inner-fanboy is squeeing with intense delight. This game is truly masterful. A game created by a small team whom you can tell are creating something they themselves truly enjoy.

I think that is the best way to describe this game. An indie developed, JRPG-inspired RPG that was created by players who love those types of games themselves and it shows in so many ways. The quirky, sometimes downright stupid (I mean that in the most lovingly way possible like a dumb, cute puppy) dialogue, the battle system with it’s difficulties and strategies, and even the artwork and music. All of it shows a passion that few other teams can match.

Non-spoiler afterthoughts/feedback:

This game had a lot of what I love about classic RPGs in a nutshell. The art is definitely very good quality and the OST tracks are immersive though they struggle with awkward loops at times. There are times where there should be some music or sound effects that leave you in complete silence, also. It struggles a bit in plot coherency & depth, but makes up for it in other areas. Encountered a few bugs which seem to exist pretty late into this game’s post-release development (mostly related to battle mechanics, player/enemy stats & menu options bugs). Some humorous dialogue at times, definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously and isn’t afraid to reveal that it draws a lot of inspiration from other games. I like the additions that the DLC brings but I do wish it had been integrated in a way that made more sense in the timeline of how the player’s progress naturally flows.

I originally bought this game out of boredom. Having played everything in my library over again looking for a refreshing narrative; something I could hover my cursor over and think, “this, this is well written.”

I eventually bought a kindle and put a Hiatus on gaming for several months, disappointed at the lack of any new titles containing a decent narrative. I initially broke this hiatus at the release of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and I was happy with what the game offered. Yet, still, the narrative end of the game felt passive and only served to augment the gameplay.

Definitely can’t recommend this game as a stand-alone, though that may change if/when he releases the complete story and bundles them together in some way. But as it stands, it is a very incomplete and barebones jrpg. But let’s start with some positives.

Positives

• Music: Definitely was the best part of this game. All the music sounds really good and enjoyable enough to listen to outside of the game.

• Setting: While it really does come off being a pretty generic jrpg world, it is interesting enough to keep your attention.

So far, I’d recommend this. If you know Japanese well enough. A machine translation being worth it or not, I can’t comment on. The story might get a little lost in translation. The gameplay is very easy to follow and should be much less problematic, especially because the game makes it very easy to see where to go, and what to make.

The protagonist is an alchemist, who comes to a tiny village in search of a new cauldron, as her old one unfortunately broke. She is accompanied by someone, kind of part of her family, that helps her out. While at first not very much welcomed, and the village seems to be not quite what she imagined, it turns out there actually is a cauldron around. Though the villagers considered it a.. bath tub. Oh well. With this cauldron she’s able to help the villagers out with their troubles, to slowly become more trusted. All the while new characters come to this really tiny villain, and about everything and everyone seems to have a secret behind it. The village itself, as the villagers don’t make it a secret that they HAVE a secret, our main alchemy girl herself getting assaulted by a weird flashy lightning similar to when her previous cauldron broke, and new traveler that seem to know a bit too much about their handiwork for just being a random traveler.

How much of this game I’ve played: 12 Hours, 35 minutes

How I’ve played so much: I had a pre-ordered non-steam copy.

Completed Main story, not the super secret boss area.

Here’s why you’d be interested in this game: Good rhymes, good story, old school gameplay.

Good rhymes: If you haven’t heard of BeNeVoLeNcE, you might have heard of Mega Ran - he’s known for clean nerdcore rhymes over chiptune beats and melodies. Hip Hop by both is featured in the game, and it’s not an “afterthought” like it might be in some games - the music is interwoven in with the story - it’s actually rewarding to gain access to the rhymes that go along with the instrumentals in different parts of the game.

Breath of Death VII

Breath of Death VII

The Ugly:

  • The character portraits: I can only hope they were intentionally going for that pre-teen deviantArt feel, but being ironically bad doesn’t mean it’s not still horrid. Comparatively, the pixel art for enemies is generally pretty nice.

–———

The Good:

  • Fixed Encounter System. Each area has a set number of random encounters. After you fight that many, no more will appear as you walk around, although you can still seek out as many enemies as you wish through the “Fight” menu option. I found myself often simply exploiting the system by doing all 20 Fights that a late-game dungeon had, right next to the MP-restore point, and then going about my merry way through the dungeon totally risk free.

A Paladin’s Steam Review: Breath of Death VII: The Beginning

  • Genre: 2D jRPG

  • Developed & Published by: Zeboyd Games

  • Platform: Windows only.

  • Business Model: Duo Pack Purchase

  • Copy Purchased by Myself

What Is This Game?

Breath of Death is a retro-styled RPG solo campaign game. It features a fast turn-based combat, graphics reminiscent of 8-16bit RPGs, many dungeons and locations to delve and many more features. Its also a parody of other RPGs that came before, hence the the ridiculously long title that is apparently part of a series of games. I can’t imagine what game they could possibly be poking fun at with the title. The game takes many chances to poke fun at itself, at other RPGs and the characters as well. They also like to break the 4th wall from time to time too. But it all fits into the universe somehow without feeling awkward or thrown in. The campaign itself is around 4-6 hours with additional modes and difficulty levels to keep you challenged

Celestian Tales: Realms Beyond

Celestian Tales: Realms Beyond

This is a really good game for those who like RPGs with a great story line. I played Old North and then this one, which is a direct sequel. While the gameplay in both games is simplistic and the same, the visuals, music and depth of story are worlds apart. The story line in Old North was good enough to keep you interested, but in Realms Beyond, it takes a darker more realistic turn. Unlike the previous game, Realms Beyond allows you to make the hard choices and then you see the effect that those choices have on the game’s overall story; some that have a serious and direct bearing on how the story plays out. Honestly, some of the twists in the plot really surprised me and by the time I had finished the game, I was quite disappointed that it was already ending, because I wanted the story to continue. Hopefully the folks at Ekuator games will continue building on their success and keep making more games in this series!

TLDR: Memorable characters, gorgeous artwork, hauntingly beautiful music, all trapped in a poorly built game.

I’ve never been more upset writing a negative review for such a great game. Seriously.

The potential is all there; Incredible writing, beautiful artistry, and great music. But the game build is atrocious, even compared to the earlier titles in the series. ESPECIALLY compared to the earlier titles in the series. Things are supposed to get better with knowledge and experience, not worse!

Cosmic Star Heroine

Cosmic Star Heroine

Gotta beat this dead horse:

If you enjoy RPGs from the late 16-bit era, this is a no-brainer purchase.

You’ve got the story tone and humor of the Lunar games, the base-building of Suikoden, Chrono-trigger inspired combat (enhanced with the depth and lessons learned from Penny Arcade 3 & 4), a Phantasy Star-esque setting, and a Sega CD/PC Engine-style of presentation - anime-style cutscenes and all.

The soundtrack (again by Hyperduck Soundworks) is stellar and is chock full of catchy tunes that ooze 80s cyberpunk, with some atmospheric tracks and pulse-pumping battle themes for good measure. The game’s Indie Rock Band playable character even has a fully voiced track that would be right at home in an episode of Bubblegum Crisis. It’s all great stuff, at least in my opinion.

Real player with 178.6 hrs in game

So, this might seem like an incredible statement to make, but IMO Cosmic Star Heroine is one of the best JRPGs I’ve ever played. And before the rush of “well you didn’t play many” comments, I’ve played nearly every Final Fantasy title, old school titles like Breath of Fire I & II, Dragon Warrior, all the way to more modern stuff like Baiten Kaitos series. So I know what I’m talking about.

Cosmic Star Heroine does a lot of things right and very little wrong. It is true there were some issues right after release where there were some bugs (never encountered any personally) and some placeholder things were still there, but a majority of those issues have been cleared up. What is left is simply glorious.

Crystal Story: The Hero and the Evil Witch

Crystal Story: The Hero and the Evil Witch

As a devoted Crystal Story fan since I first played it in Newgrounds, I like this game, but like other RPGS I have problems with it…

Probably because one you’ve beat the main story, I felt the game relies too much on the RNG for getting the best equipment to withstand the bosses in Evil Tower.

And I think this game kinda lacks the charm of what made the original (and II) popular back then, like Feed Slime and Zombie Defense. (Maybe it’s just me because popularity is nowadays is targeted to mobile Battle Royale games…, rather than flash games)

Real player with 36.4 hrs in game

I’m gonna be real with you chief I only picked this up because I wanted to know what actually happened because Hiro was obviously lying and rewriting history, I went in expecting the incredible world, deeply layered characters, good comedy, a well written found family, emotions, twists, turns, and fun albeit somewhat repetitive game play. What I got was characters about as interesting as mildly wet cardboard that were more two dimensional than their actual 2D sprites and a game that is so UNBELIEVABLY grindy and repetitive with the exact same dungeon over and over and still an absolute slog even if you DO said soul crushing amount of grinding. It was about as pleasant as chewing on glass. I’m gonna be honest, this might be the first video game that I’ve played myself and ended up hating. I tried my best to give this game the benefit of the doubt, I did the side quests, I tried to progress quickly and go through the story, I overlooked the first several blunders but there just really isn’t anything salvageable here. This game is frustrating and is the exact opposite of what it’s sequel is which makes the fact that the two games are related and made by the same people astounding. Buy it I guess if you’re curious since it’s only ten bucks but if you only got ten bucks to spend on games don’t pick this one for the love of god.
