Cyber Knights: Flashpoint

Cyber Knights: Flashpoint

Explore the dystopian cyberpunk future of 2231 as you command a company of shadow mercenaries working for the highest bidder. Cyber Knights wraps a world full of consequential story choices and significant character development around a rich core of classic and new mechanics. The game combines tactical elements like stealth, hacking and tense combat with strategic features like base building, contact management and in-depth squad customization. Cyber Knights invites you to jack in and explore a unique cyberpunk world and the immersive, human stories of your merc team in the dark future of 2231.

  • Turn-based Tactics: Deep and tactical gameplay using a turn-based, gridless third-person combat simulator. Cover! Overwatch! Recoil!

  • Dynamic Cyberpunk Story: Unique interwoven narrative with depth, meaningful player choices and hundreds of hours of gameplay. Create your own story reminiscent of pen and paper cyberpunk RPGs

  • Sophisticated Missions: Combine stealth, hacking and combat across multi-stage missions. Gain pre-mission advantages from Contacts

  • Endless Builds: Experiment with endless combos of Jobs, cyberware, weapons and gadgets to build the perfect team

  • Evolving Characters: Your team evolves as the story, your choices and battle leave lasting wounds, add Traits and threaten to strip their humanity

  • Safehouse Base Building: Construct a custom safehouse and upgrade rooms such as weapon shop, hund kennel and medical bay.

Cyber Knights strikes a unique tone with a futuristic setting that has passed through the messy near-future to arrive at dystopian 2231. Man-made environmental disasters have ravaged our biosphere. Artificial consciousness has been created, subsequently murdered, and then strictly outlawed at a global level. Megacorporate colonies and research stations dot the solar system from Venus to Jupiter. Quantum computing has radically altered the digital landscape and the very meaning of privacy and digital security.

The game’s threaded stories originate from both inside and outside your team – weaving together threads from your hired mercenaries, criminal connections and history that just won’t die. These stories operate on three interconnected and at times overlapping levels – personal stories (your team), contact stories (your employers) and event stories (city-wide).

And every choice you make and mission you run will impact your character’s permanent Traits, changing them in both subtle and big ways. Their stories and your choices combine to create a unique narrative for every game, every Knight and every team.

The second game our studio created, Cyber Knights RPG, took hundreds of thousands of gamers on an gritty cyberpunk roller-coaster, trying to get rich or go down shooting. The classic Cyber Knights has always had a huge following within our community and we are xcited to come back to the world and stories we started creating there so many years ago with an all new game, Cyber Knights: Flashpoint.

We’re weaving together the genre’s classic themes with the unique setting and history of Cyber Knights to create some of the most cutting, gripping and human stories we’ve ever told. Betrayal, sacrifice, trading away humanity for an advantage, living fast and dying young, revenge and testing the bonds of friendship and trust – it’s all here under the New Boston dome.

Dungeon Rats

Dungeon Rats

Dungeon Rats is a pure combat game set in the universe of Age of Decadence. Like it’s predecessor, it promises to force players to make hard decisions and weigh every tradeoff.

The first thing you’ll notice when playing the game is the excellent, atmospheric music, almost perfectly complementing the game’s main menu screen. Most of the in game scenes, however, err towards too dark for easy visibility, even somewhat hindering playability.

While shallow in comparison, the conversation trees are highly reminiscent of Age of Decadence’s conversations; detailed, lore-heavy, full of unsaid implications, which were one of the best qualities of AoD. Unfortunately, as Dungeon Rats is extremely linear, it could not embrace the full scope of these conversations.

Important Note: I played through Age of Decadence several times before playing this game, so my experice may vary to yours. I only played this game on “Hard” (default difficulty) and “Solo Mode Hard”.

Overview:

The game consists of approximately 50 battles, which are set-pieces. There are no random encounters. This makes it a game about learning what the encounters are about. Playing the game for the first time was challenging and I did not learn my lessons that defense is more important than offense. I also learnt later that it is ok for some of the early companions to die (although you don’t want it to happen often).

Ambition of the Slimes

Ambition of the Slimes

The first thing you should know about Ambition of the Slimes if you are considering picking it up is that although it is a strategy RPG, the emphasis is much more on the “strategy” than the “RPG”. Grinding will only help you so much; far more important is choosing the right slimes and making the right moves. If this sounds too stressful, then you may want to seek out another game (however, please note that there is an Easy difficulty which I didn’t touch– I stuck with Normal, plus replayed some levels on Hard and did a few Challenges– so YMMV).

very disappointed, the game is not balanced to give a fair difficulty to the player. Even easy mode will kick your ass. Enemies are too much powerful and, for reasons, some of them will be difficult to “claim”. Also you have very weak slimes, leveling them up is not very helpful, and you get new species randomly. Also in some levels you have a limited number of slimes vs hordes of enemies.

And…. seriously, why, for all the reasons in the world, the tutorial explains you how to use a very important slime with the stickyness ability, but when the tutorial ends you don’t have that slime anymore and you can’t find that anywhere? Why?

The game follows a civil war fought in medieval China. The three campaigns allow you to assume the roles of one of three warlords, and your commanders gain experience and acquire new powers and extra health as the story goes on.

Before the carnage is unleashed, though, the familiar rigmarole of setting up an economy awaits. Chop down trees, harvest grain, mine stone, breed the horses.

You must recruit peasants to build a base of operations, then create an army to crush your enemies.

A feel good story, great script, and gameplay that felt like a breath of fresh air. In terms of gameplay, the things that I loved were:

  • Characters that had very distinctly unique traits and upgrades

  • Stage rankings

  • the stages themselves

  • revert feature

Each character had their own set of equipable upgrades that made a lot of sense and complemented their traits really well. One could also think of many ways the different characters with their personal upgrades could complement each other in different situations, and winning a stage easily because you found a good combination, was very satisfying.

What a pleasant little winter-wonderland. Pleasant in two ways: This game is really diverse and easy to play. I would highly recommend this game to kids or parents who’re looking for games for their children. I think it is more built towards kids because for me it was a little too easy.

The story starts out slow and progresses through various stages of growing up and friendships. A nice game for a cold winter-night and a cup of warm chocolate.

Great reverse tower defense game. Easy to get hooked!

Single-player is fun, but multiplayer up to 8 players over LAN (but can fill in bots with different difficulties if you’d like) means I can blow up my buddy’s armies from afar.

Make lots of armies, blow up the other guys' armies, make bigger armies, and conquer. Multiple factions and individualized talent trees allows versatility in playstyle and adds a lot of depth to the game. 5/5.

Hellenica

Hellenica

I had this game in my backlog for a while before playing it, and I would say I enjoyed the overall experience. The setting (Steampunk mythological Greece) is very charming, the characters are simple but likeable, the story can take unexpected turns and even in my 4th run through the “branching storyline” I was finding places I imagined only existed “in lore”, and the battle system could often lead to bombastic combos where using positioning properly could make the difference between taking out 5 enemies in a turn or losing turn 2.

DISCLAIMER

I got my copy of the game free and early. I don’t know the devs though I have met one of them and one of his friends is one of my friends and they knew that I liked games in this genre, so I was asked to play through the game for compatibility/bugs.

CONS:

  • Scarce on animations and lots of re-used art in general.

  • Too few character abilities spread across to much game; not enough incentive to play levels and progress once you’ve unlocked the main abilities you’re interested in.

  • Branching story felt unnecessary; would’ve preferred linear story rather than hearing about the same things over and over.
