Denari

Denari

Denari is a narrative-driven hack and slasher with a telekinetic twist. It tells the story of a boy who is aided by the spirits of the dead to save his people from an invading empire. Featuring the iconic toon-style art of Ninja Kiwi veteran Tamihana Greaves and powerful soundtrack from multiple award winning composer David Mason.

Mechanics

On top of snappy attacks, quick dashes, precise counters and slick executions, players can harness the power of the goddess Qira. As a lone warrior against an army, manipulating enemy attacks to cause friendly fire damage is crucial to gaining an advantage.

Redirect

Ranged attacks can be caught and redirected. Some projectiles cause AOE damage upon redirected hit.

Blast

Taiu can wield spiritual energy that seeks nearby enemies.

Friendly Fire

Each enemy has a heavy attack that can hurt other enemies. Taiu can manipulate these attacks to gain the upper hand.

Characters

The player character of the story. Taiu is a young orphan who grew up on port Nali, a peaceful fishing village. He dreams of becoming one of Qira’s Apostles, a group of elite warrior monks who dedicate themselves to the service of the goddess Qira and her people.

Taiu’s zany teacher. Teach is a former apostle whose obsession with mastery has lead him to seek a disciple to train in the art of combat. As Taiu’s master, Teach takes it upon himself to push Taiu to his limits and beyond, sometimes at the risk of his dear student’s life.

The elder of Port Nali. Ooma’s long life of hard earned lessons have imbued her with great wisdom, enough to doubt even the most sacred traditions. Her disapproval in Taiu’s path and distaste for his teacher are rooted in questions of faith, ones she’s sought the answers to her whole life.

Enemies

The Denari army are a terrible force powered by advanced weaponry and dark magic. From the brutish Beast to the fire-wielding Crone, the Denari are able to adapt to and overpower any force that stands in their way.

To make matters worse, Their general, “the Summoner” possesses the power to teleport his soldiers from afar, enabling the army to cross continents and conquer new territories efficiently.

To stop the invasion for good, Taiu must face the Summoner and end him.

REVISED AFTER FINISHING GAME

In my original review where I had only played a few hours, I mainly focused the problem with the combat system. I want to give a more complete review of the game after completing it with all achievements.

Initially, combat primarily involves using ranged attacks and depending upon mana regeneration, where the primarily healing is through potions that have long cooldowns. Melee combat requires precise timing to avoid taking damage until you have more advanced weapons and artifacts. However, once you get further into the game and get better armor, combat is less problematic. There are a few challenging bits in the game, but overall the game becomes easier the more you play. By the end you are able to do effective combos of various moves using different weapons and abilities that make it so you don’t take any damage if you are careful.

Surprisingly, I didn’t just enjoy the game. I loved it and wish I could play more.

First off, Zenith isn’t exactly an action RPG, but a light hack’n’slash. You can engage in close combat or, if your manna allows, magically attack from a distance. There’s no real level up system, you can just equip better armour and weapons, which in turn boost your stamina, manna, attack and defense. Sarcasm remains unchanged and always at 999! :D There is a kind of a skill tree, where you can boost various aspects. Fortunately you don’t need to make hard decisions, by the end of the game you’ll have all the points to be fully upgraded.

Gutting Goblins!

Fun game! Very reminiscent of gauntlet and golden axe! I especially liked kailani’s attacks, if you use the heavy attack and spin in a circle you actually get to attack twice! You get to invent your own bladestorm ability in a sense!

Its just 2$ you cant go wrong here if you like the game style at all.

Took but a few moments to learn, but it gets difficult pretty quick! Overall, very enjoyable game, reminds me of the old arcade style hack and slash.

Shadows: Awakening

Shadows: Awakening

Thou art already dead…

Shadows: Awakening may look like a Diablo-like on its face. But it has its own thing going on. Let me qualify that, as far as it being an isometric hack and slash with loot and levels — that’s exactly what it is, however you play as a demon with other people inside of them — a devourer of souls.

Shadows is a bit more story driven than its contemporaries. And while you will be picking up loot and leveling, the game places significant importance on dialogue decisions as well as quests taken and completed. Some areas will have lite puzzle solving as well, additionally, many side dungeon/caves are available. — Now, enemies to do not respawn should you decide to travel back to a completed area stay for a few enemies that pop out of jars or some other environmental object. So, there isn’t much reason to return unless you want to satiate the completionist in you that missed a side quest. You won’t need — or even be able to grind levels or gear out of those areas once you’ve moved on.

You’ve been summoned from death, pulled back into life by a demon. As a puppet of his goodwill you fight side by side to prevent the world from total destruction.

Shadows Awakening is an action roll playing game. It’s hack and slay in an isometric perspective with beautiful graphics, satisfying combat, an extremely deep story, very well balanced difficulty, tons of collectables, great puzzles, many different heroes with unique upgrade possibilities and highly enjoyable boss fights. The game does an awful lot very well but sucks when it comes to quest design and story telling.

Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms

Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms

Of all single player action RPGs to date, Diablo being the benchmark, only dungeon siege 1 and 2 felt it could surpass its perfection at every angle of what it means to be an action role playing game. Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms hits that sweet spot providing an indepth original story arc, simple yet complex evolving skill structure, efficiency over time for fun actions per second, extreme replayability, new even better party system management, impressively fitting musical score and near infinite ways to play this glorious hack and slash. Let me tell you why (and also compare it to Diablo):

If you are looking for another Diablo game, this is not it.

Cons:

EDIT: No more crashes happened after that first one so I guess this is a non-issue

“It still has some technical issues but I only experienced 1 crash so far and you can say I abused the game quite a lot. Most games can’t take the amount of Alt+Tab that I throw at them but this one did. :)”

EDIT: this getting stuck has not happened in a long time.

“The most annoyng technical issue I ran into is related to collision when the character gets stuck on a level difference, and that usually happens when there are 7 enemies around him.”

The Opposite of PoE!

Playing Path of Exile since 8/2011, it slowly derailed for me from hack and slash to build (or better copy) , buy , and now study bossfight phases and anounced abilities.

If you want to go back to the roots and frag some stuff 2 sec. after you logged in and dont want to plan heists or syndicates or 10 other timewasters - this may be your game for the next hours.

pro:

  • copied the right stuff from 20 other games for a unique feel

  • nice Itemsystem ( merge the stats of 2 items and upgrade items 40x 5% in Power)

This game is an ode to the original ARPG’s like the original Diablo. It’s a ton of fun and I’ve blown almost 10 hours into it already and seems like I’ve been playing for a couple hours tops. The drops are fun and even has lower level legendary and set items to loot and at just a bit over $10.00 is well worth the price. So far at early leveling I have one large tower like dungeon with

many different levels to explore and quests given in town with merchants and NPC. It’s a fun

game and I see a lot of mixed reviews. I think considering the price and the fun it’s well worth $10+

I had a lot of fun with this game! Fast paced action, good amount of different weapons, funny characters… Despite the simple art style, it also looks gorgeous (I’m in love with some of the light effects). You can thoroughly customise the difficulty with several sliders in Options, where you can also find some helpful accessibility choices.

Some good hours of button smashing fun watching enemies fly all around, and a bit more strategy needed against tougher enemies or particular combinations of them. Some collectibles, hidden stuff, secret ending… Long story short, great indie and good value for your money. As I always say, if it gives you more hours of entertainment than a cinema ticket, it deserves at least that money, right?

This game appeared on my store page and the name caught my attention. After seeing that the game wasn’t that much I decided to buy it, and I can say the game is definitely worth the price. If you ever just want the ability to rip through hordes of enemies and just feel the satisfaction of taking out a large group of minions at once then this game differently achieves that.

One thing for certain is that you need to have patience since some of the bosses are pretty challenging. But with enough perseverance, you can beat any of the bosses. This game is a 10/10 for me and even though I have beaten the game to 100% I am definitely going to play more.

If your gaming group is into this genre and style its a great little game night addition. Not sure how the difficulty scales but with 3 players its plenty hard still!

Brings back memories of playing old school beat’em ups at the arcade, except no need for quarters. Borderline impossible to play some of the characters alone, which limits replayability if you don’t have a couple of friends to play with. Overall it was surprisingly enjoyable, though definitely needs some more polish.

I like the game very much. It’s fun to play, it has interesting puzzles and sometimes challenging enemies. I also like low poly graphics and Slovak legendary hero theme. Also music fits perfectly and it has great game sounds. It’s great indie game to play.
