Medievalien is a very pleasant action roguelike which combines the procedural generation of a classic dungeon crawler with the new-age feel of your favorite phone shoot ‘em ups like Archero. It’s easy to get into and play a run, and it’s not a big time commitment. It’s a game that’s constantly being added to in terms of bug fixes and new content. It helps that the developers are extremely receptive to feedback and the like. And while there are some bugs (which I expect in early access), they are few and far between. Most of them will not impact game play in any significant way.

I see great potential for the game, but as I’m writing the review now I’m only taking those things into consideration that are already in the game.

Gameplay: 5/5

Graphics: 5/5

Tutorials: 4/5

Difficulty: 5/5

Support: 5/5

Gameplay:

The gameplay loop is simple:

1. build/rearrange production line

2. set up the logistics for that line

3. tweak bits and pieces to make it profitable

4. plan the next production line / change the line output to another product

For me that is exactly what I was looking for. You create something, an issue arises, you fix that issue and that leads to another issue or you’re set and you create the next new thing.

i loved the concept but the execution is so EXTREAMLY flawed..

market: why is it capped so low in FREEPLAY. ive tried countless times trying to tweak the my out puts. But literally ever single time ive played the supply chains get so damn long that I cannot maintain a profitable business with out producing more then I can sell which ironically makes me go bankrupt

out/in bound shipping: why can we move these? Why is there a limit to how many items I can place in the in/out bound points with out the ability to upgrade them?

Para Bellum

Para Bellum

Para Bellum — is a real-time strategy puzzle game that will require a high level of microcontrol from you. The action takes place in an original fantasy universe in which you have to take control of the fate of an entire continent. During the story campaign, you will take one castle after another by storm, step by step freeing your patrimony from the power of the vile but powerful empire of Denatar. Para Bellum is an unusual RTS that uses original mechanics for the genre.

You are the first ruler to unite the scattered kingdoms of western Kiltmer under your rule in order to effectively counter the threat of the elven empire of Denatar. However, the Emperor of the Elves and the most vile of his vassals managed to outwit you: your army was weakened, your brother was killed, and you managed to escape only by a miracle, after a fierce battle for the capital. Many years have passed, and finally you have the opportunity to return what is yours by right, recapture every fortress of western Kiltmer and end the rule of the cunning elves!

Having examined the sketch of the fortress walls from your scouts, having analyzed the enemy’s defenses, you lined up your army in the correct formation, putting each troop in its place. All troops have special abilities and their own specialization. It is necessary to correctly combine units with their abilities to overcome the enemy’s defense.

However, it doesn’t end there! You have to personally lead the assault, opening up the potential of each troop on each of the five attacking lines simultaneously. Cover defenseless soldiers with shields, dodge the devastating shots of enemy ballistae, counteract the attacks of the besieged, light torches in the darkness and In the end, break through the gates of the coveted castle with successive blows of your rams!

The game sets certain conditions at the stage of army formation. You are free to choose the troops and their formation by yourself. To line up a turtle bristling with shields so that no enemy arrow reaches the target, or opposite, to shower the defenders with heavy fire of their own arrows, so that they are afraid to even look towards your impending army - the choice is yours! Most importantly, do not forget that to counter the enemy’s defenses on each of the attacking lines, you need to select the appropriate units in your own army.

  • Para Bellum is characterized by high dynamics of what is happening, any mistake or delay can cost you dearly.

  • You will need to collect a unique army, to successfully complete the level. This feature turns the preparatory assault phase into a puzzle.

  • There are three sets of challenges for each level, differing in their complexity. Maximum difficulty will require you to concentrate and use all units competently.

  • The army formation depends on your playing style.

  • Many interesting and varied squads and mini-games associated with them.

  • Colorful locations and formidable fortresses.

Very very fun. Counting the web version, I’ve put hundreds if not thousands of hours in to this game. Strategy is very important. Like backgammon, it’s still skill even with RNG. My review is mostly using the version from about a week ago. I’ll update it when I’ve spent some more time with the new version.

Pros:

Strategy is easy to learn but hard to master

Art is pretty cool

Very few bugs

It manages good variety without excessive complexity

I can’t say exactly what it is, but I really like the gameplay

A great casual hex based strategic beat em up rpg, like a classic D and D one shot campaign. Weigh the options of attacking vs. sneaking and grabbing swords, bows and shields vs. counting your potions and scrolls for the dragons. No story lines to remember, just dragons to beat up, and mummies, and trolls, and those pesky firebugs.

Run in the daily hunt against all other players, how many skeleton elbows can you collect in one run? 100? Inconceivable!

A lot of strategy in each room, should I sneak by the orcs and just grab the loot, hoping to not be spotted? Can I take out the casters and snipers before I get clobbered? Can I handle the rain of fireballs? (p.s. if you get stuck in a rain of fireballs, you are doing it wrong).

Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness

Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness

Cant recommend this yet. I have no problems with the usual early access stuff; broken game mechanics, bugged quests, and balance issues. Those are all easy to fix. However, I do have some main concerns that the small dev team may or may not be able to fix for main release:

1. Performance issues. Long load times and poor frame rates on high end machines with SSDs. Not acceptable from a game that looks like 1998. Since you get a loading screen every time you enter/exit an area or building, long loading times severely impact the overall experience. Pretty much every streamer who streamed this said the same thing.

Party-based computer rpg similar to NWN, Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, et al. If you like those type this game should fit your needs. It is RTwP for those who only play one type of combat.

I think there is enough here to support for sure:

Pros:

Quite a large variety of stuff to find for the hoarder in all of us.

Melee combat is fairly robust and healing gets the job done.

The painted map backgrounds are mostly pretty.

Good variety in classes.

I will cover cons in detail since they need fixing:

Centurion Rex

Centurion Rex

Centurion Rex is a strategy game set in an alternate history where the Meditterean region is ruled by a Roman-dinosaur-led republic. Few dare to oppose the hegemony of the reptilian republic. One such force is Shark Shogunate - a militaristic dictatorship from the Far East.

You can take control of either republican or shark forces and lead them to victory through superior leadership and tactics.

I made a poor narrative choice when I killed every character that looked important, and looking back it was definitely a wrong decision to experience the game, but it’s still nice to have that freedom. Overall the game is a competent tribute to the Fallout series, although I do think that further into the story the game falls apart in terms of difficulty scaling and itemization. There are so many moving parts with a game like this, even the UI would have to be pretty complicated to put everything together, so despite having some polish issues, I still think the dev did a decent job. Notably, the game feels like it was designed with a controller in mind, the way you change the items often involves cycling, which is only ideal if you have limited buttons, and I wish it was more straightforward for the keyboard. Interestingly, the combat also features stamina-based moves, even though I would not qualify it as a souls-like, it still has some similarities when it comes to the melee gameplay. Now I wouldn’t say the game has a great pixel-timing with the enemy attacks, the way you block needs to be more rewarding, I would often get hit right after blocking or dodging - it really depends on the enemy.

One of the first things you encounter in Death Trash is a giant Fleshkraken. A disturbingly pinkish, pulsating, fleshy mass of tentacles, seemingly embedded and sticking out of a wall. Next to him is his human guardian that tells you his ward has been a bit silent lately. Turns out, the Fleshkraken can speak to you, in simple words, but enough to tell you that he wants something. This pops up your first side quest. It’s immediately obvious that from here on out, things can only get more weird, bizzare and definitely more twisted.
